  • Purpose: Numerous experimental studies have shown the benefits of treating thermal burns by cooling. Nevertheless, few studies have shown the clinical effect of cooling therapy on thermal burns. This study aimed to identify the clinical effect of immediate cooling therapy. Methods: The research was conducted as a retrospective, case-control study. All patients had thermal injuries characterized as a superficial second-degree burn. In the cooling group, 14 patients had first-aid cooling therapy delivered by either parents, caregivers, general practitioners, local hospitals, and/or Myongji hospital. Included in the study were 22 control patients who were not treated with any cooling therapies. Other clinical factors, such as age, sex, cause of burn injury, and burn area (Total Body Surface Area %), were taken into consideration. The duration of treatment was defined as the time from the occurrence of the injury to the presence of complete re-epithelialization, as confirmed by two surgeons. Results: The duration of treatment in the cooling group was significantly less than that the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Cooling therapy as an initial emergent treatment is clinically effective for superficial second-degree burn injuries.

  • Two perforated plates are used to investigate local heat/mass transfer characteristics in an impingement/effusion cooling system. A naphthalene sublimation method is conducted to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. The two plates are placed in parallel position with gap distances of 1, 2, 4 and 6 times of effusion hole diameter. The effects of hole arrangements of the plates are studied for staggered, square, and hexagonal arrays. The experiments are conducted at Reynolds number of 10,000 based on the effusion hole diameter. The results show that the smaller hole size in the staggered array has the higher transfer coefficients on the stagnation region due to the formation of higher momentum flows through the impingement holes. In the square array, heat/mass transfer on the target plate is more uniform as the number of impingement holes increases. High and uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained in the hexagonal array.

  • Gas turbine engine among Principal internal combustion engines has been mainly applied as an aero and industrial Power plant. In order to increase its thermal efficiency. it has been raised their pressure ratio of compressor and the turbine inlet temperature. To operate above the limit temperature of turbine material, turbine nozzle vanes should be cooled. For this the cooling air is bled from the compressor section of 9as turbine. Meanwhile, to keep high thermal efficiency of 9as turbine, turbine vanes are to be cooled by using small cooling air Therefore, the complex cooling passages are requested to be designed and evaluated the effectiveness of vane cooling by measuring turbine vane temperature. But it is very difficult or impossible for us to measure local turbine temperatures at actual temperature When local heat transfer coefficients are known these can be calculated, therefore this study has been investigated on obtaining these coefficients of turbine vane at room temperature using TLC.

  • The ground source heat pump (GSHP) system is a kind of the temperature differential energy system using relatively stable underground temperature as heat source of space heating and cooling. This system can achieve higher performance of system than it of conventional air source heat pump systems. However, its superiority of the system performance is different according to installation location or local climate, because the system performance depends on the underground condition which is decided by annual average air temperature. In this study, in order to estimate the feasibility of the ground source heat pump system according to the local climate, numerical simulation was conducted using the ground heat transfer model and the surface heat balance model. The case study was conducted in the condition of Seoul, Daejeon, and Busan, In the result, the heat exchange rate of Busan was 34.33 W/m as the largest in heating season and it of Seoul was 40.61 W/m as the largest in cooling.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of local heating and cooling of various body parts on the skin temperature of the exposed extremities including neck. Hot pack was used to warm up the body of seven participants for 15 minutes and it was removed as the temperature of the hot pack decreased after 15minutes of warming. Thermograms of body surface with and without hot pack were analyzed intensively to observe the efficiency of the local heating of shoulder, abdomen, back waist, and foot on the skin temperature of ten area of the subjects' body. The results indicated that the absolute skin temperature of front upper arm and thigh was significantly higher depending on the area of heating, especially, in case of abdomen and foot heating, which was not observed at the back of the body. The rate of skin temperature of extremities such as finger, palm and foot was significantly different depending on the body area of local heating. Generally, it was found that back waist heating was not efficient to warm up and maintain the skin temperature of the body after removing the hot pack.

  • The effects of cooling rate on the microstructures, precipitation of Cu-cluster, .epsilon.-Cu and impact toughness of high strength low alloy(HSLA) steel were studied using hardness tester, impact tester, DSC(differential scanning calorimetry), AES(auger electron spectroscopy) and TEM(transmission electron microscopy). Not only the Cu-precipitates but also the segregation of Cu, As, Sb, P, S, N, Sn along grain boundary were not observed at the specimens heat treated from 800.deg. C to 300.deg. C with the cooling time of 12-125 sec. The Cu-cluster, .epsilon.-Cu are formed by introducing ageing after cooling and the effect of precipitates on hardening increase after cooling was the same in all cooling rate. The peak hardness was obtained at an ageing of 500.deg. C in all cooling conditions. The impact energy become higher as the cooling time increases. This fact can be explained to be due to the tempering effect applied on the cooling stage since the present alloy has a relatively high Ms temperature and the local high concentration of the retained austenite.

  • This study was to determine the effect of cooling part of the trunk without harm for the health. The results provide basic data for the development of clothing which could increase work efficiency and reduce body strain in hot environment. Eight males took part in the study. The experiment was conducted in a climate-chamber controlled with $37{\pm}1^{\circ}C,\;50{\pm}5%R.H$. The trunk was divided into six areas to be cooled: head, neck, chest, abdomen, the upper back, the lower back. According to preceding studies, permissible safety cooling limits of skin temperature, of each part of the trunk for four hours cooling were $25^{\circ}C$ on the head, $20^{\circ}C$ on the neck, $27^{\circ}C$ on the chest, $25^{\circ}C$ on the abdomen, $20^{\circ}C$ on the upper back, $20^{\circ}C$ on the lower back. So cooling temperatures of each region set up temperatures above mentioned. In conclusion, the head, the neck and the upper back cooling could reduce sweating amount, rectal temperature and heart rates and reduce the heat stress of workers exposing in the hot environment by decreased subjective sensations of heat and comfort. Thus, it was concluded that effectiveness of cooling among the trunk was best on the head and the neck.

  • This study has been focused on the influence of the metallic mold cooling effects on the solidification structures and the mechanical properties for Al-10%Si alloy castings by the variation of pouring temperatures, metallic mold temperatures and Cooling part of metallic mold. The dendrite arm spacing of Al-10%Si alloy was decreased with increasing cooling rate. In case of bottom cooling of metallic mold, DAS was appeared to be $20-22{\mu}m$ and in the middle cooling, it was increased to $36-40{\mu}m$. The DAS decreased proportionally $with(cooling\;rate)^{-3/2}$ at pouring temperatures $680^{\circ}C$ and $(cooling\;rate)^{-1/2}$ at pouring temperature $760^{\circ}C$, but it was proportionally increased to $(local\;solidification\;time)^{1/2-1/3}$ at pouring temperature $680^{\circ}C$ and $760^{\circ}C$. The maximum tensile strength of Al-10%Si alloy casting was obtained in case of bottom cooling of mold at pouring temperature $680^{\circ}C$ and metallic mold temperature $320^{\circ}C$.

  • Film cooling characteristics has been examined numerically for the height variation of a stepped slot exit. In this study, the upstream wall height of the stepped slot exit varies from -2d (d = slot width) to 3d, blowing ratio ranges from 0.5 to 3, and injection angles are $15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;and\;45^{\circ}$. The results showed that film cooling performance was mainly subjected to the magnitude of recirculation region near the downstream-side slot exit as well as the magnitude and the distribution region of turbulent kinetic energy due to the local velocity and momentum differences between the coolant and the main flow near the slot exit. The up-1d type slot at higher blowing ratios over 2 and the flat type slot at lower blowing ratios below 1 have the best film cooling performances, in case of the injection angles of $30^{\circ},\;and\;45^{\circ}$, respectively. Compared with the other injection angles, in case of the injection angles of $15^{\circ}$, the best film cooling performances was shown in even a higher upstream wall (up-3d) at higher blowing ratio like 3 by the gradual reduction of the coolant velocity which minimizes the local velocity differences between the coolant and the main flow near the slot exit.
