  • Three cats with 2 weeks to 1 month history of drooling, halitosis, difficulty eating and pain on opening the mouth were presented to local animal hospitals. On physical examination, the gingiva was swollen, bright red and very painful with bilaterally symmetric pattern. Surgically excised abnormal gingival biopsy samples were requested for diagnosis. Histopathologically, gingival epithelium showed severe hyperplasia and ballooning degeneration. Moderate to severe infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells were presented in lamina propria. Immunohistochemically, inflammatory cells of the samples demonstrated major positive reactions for T lymphocytes. But some plasma cells also presented. According to polymerase chain reaction, tissues samples were negative for four kinds of feline viral pathogens. Based on the clinical, gross, histopathologic findings, these three cases were diagnosed as lymphoplasmacytic gingivitis in cats. In our best knowledge, this is the first case report in Korea.

  • A 2-year-old, castrated male, Scottish fold cat was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University (VMTH-SNU) for evaluation of acute bilateral blindness after general anesthesia. For dental prophylaxis in local animal hospital, general anesthesia had been induced with intravenous acepromazine and ketamine, and maintained with isoflurane after intubation. At VMTH-SNU on next day, complete blood count, electrolytes and serum chemistry values were within normal ranges. On neurologic examination, visual placing and postural reactions like as hopping, hemiwalking and wheelborrowing were reduced on right hindlimb. On ophthalmic examination, menace responses were absent on both eyes and pupillary light reflex (PLR) reduced on right eye, but other reflex and fundus were normal. Prednisolone (2 mg/kg sid for 3 days) was administrated orally and tapered. Visual placing was possible on 2nd day, and postural reactions were recovered on 4th day after dental prophylaxis. Based on the process and recovery, this case was considered as postoperative visual loss (POVL) after general anesthesia.

  • This study assessed the seroprevalence of Babesia gibsoni in companion dogs in Korea by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay using recombinant BgTRAP antigen. Dogs were randomly selected from those admitted for various reasons to local private veterinary hospitals and the Animal Medical Center of Chonbuk National University. With the owners' permission, extra blood was drawn from each dog for serological assays. Of the 188 selected dogs, seven (3.72%) were positive for B. gibsoni, including six of 167 (3.59%) indoor and one of 12 (8.33%) outdoor dogs. Of the seven dogs positive for B. gibsoni, four were aged > 10 years, two were < 1 year, and one was between 1 and 10 years; and two were Yorkshires and one each was Shih-tzu, Maltese, Pekinese, beagle and mixed. Concurrent diseases or chief complaints were anemia in two dogs, both of which had a history of confirmed babesiosis by polymerase chain reaction, and non-anemic diseases in five. Geographically, four dogs were from Jeonbuk/Jeonju, and one each from Seoul, Gyounggi-do, and Jeonnam/Gwangju. To our knowledge, this is the first report of companion dogs in Korea being seropositive for B. gibsoni. Serologic screening of subclinical or carrier dogs can detect this potentially dangerous disease and assess its epidemiology.

  • A 5-year-old female lion-head rabbit weighing 2 kg was brought to a local animal hospital with hematuria. Radiography showed a mass in the uterus, which was removed by ovariohysterectomy. Macroscopic examination showed several masses in both uterine horns. These masses, which invaded the deep uterine walls, were firm to the touch, and their cut surfaces were greyish-white in color. Histopathologically, these masses were nonencapsulated and were composed of spindle cells arranged in cellular, large interlacing bundles or streams. The tumor cells had elongate nuclei with prominent nucleoli, granular chromatin and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis were observed. Severe and extensive inflammation and necrosis were present within the masses. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive for vimentin, desmin, and α-smooth muscle actin, but negative for cytokeratin. These uterine masses were diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a uterine leiomyosarcoma in the rabbit in Korea.

  • Adenomyosis is a nonneoplastic proliforation of uterine glands characterized by multicentric infiltration of endometrial tissues into the myometrium. A female domestic short hair cat with unknown age was referred to local animal hospital in Busan for ovariohysterectomy to prevent the unwanted offspring. At the time of surgery, the uterus was enlarged with multiple nodular protrusion on the serosa. On the cut surface of uterus, elevation of the endometrium and hypertrophied myometrium were observed. Microscopically, the uterus was characterized by severe proliforation of endometrial glands into the lumen and within the myometrium. The intra-myometrial endometrium is circumferentially surrounded by bundles of hypertrophic smooth muscle cells. These endometrial glands had tall columnar epithelium lacking nuclear atypia and mitoses. In our best knowledge, this is the first report of feline adenomyosis in Korea.

  • A 9-month-old, intact female mixed dog was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Gyeongsang National University with symmetrically enlarged and protruded upper jaw. The patient was diagnosed as acute renal failure due to ethylene glycol poisoning and was treated for 1 month in a local animal hospital. In spite of treatment, the patient proceeded to chronic renal failure. Also, the patient's upper jaw begun to enlarge continuously. To evaluate this upper jaw, radiographic examination was performed. Skull radiographs revealed thickening of maxilla, decreased bone opacity, cortical thinning, loss of lamina dura and periodontal space in the maxilla. Diagnosis of rubber jaw syndrome is based on clinicial signs, radiographic findings and laboratory evidence of chronic renal failure due to ethylene glycol poisoning.

  • A 2 year-old intact male Shih-tzu dog was presented with a history of snakebite on the left upper lip. He was depressed and had swelling, erythema and pain around the left muzzle. Both mandibular lymph nodes were swollen. Fang marks were not clear, but there were scratch wounds and prolonged bleeding. Hemogram revealed neither thrombocytopenia nor echinocytosis. Increased CK value in serum chemistry and myoglobinuria in urine analysis meant muscle injury. With careful monitoring, fluid, corticosteroid, antihistamine and antibiotics were administered. After the application of ice pack and suction, local symptoms changed for the worse. However, any other systemic disorders were not identified. After 5 days, the facial swelling had resolved completely.

  • A 12-year-old spayed, female Siberian Husky dog weighing 40 kg was referred for sudden collapse without a traumatic history. A splenic mass and hemoperitoneum were identified by ultrasonography and abdominocentesis at a local animal hospital. Emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed once the patient was stabilized. A splenic mass and engorged hepatic mass in the torsed left liver lobe were identified. Partial hepatic lobectomy of the left lateral lobe was performed using a laparoscopic linear self-cutting stapler and the spleen was also removed using an ultrasonic scalpel. Histopathologic examination revealed a diagnosis of splenic hemangiosarcoma with metastasis to the liver. Chemotherapy was not performed because the client did not give consent. The patient was checked regularly until death on POD 324. The metastatic nodules had spread to the lungs and other liver lobes and had gradually increased in size. Liver lobe torsion is a rare condition in dogs, especially accompanying neoplasia. This case supports a potential relationship between liver lobe torsion and neoplastic liver mass in dogs.

  • A 7-year-old female American cocker spaniel presented with chronic regurgitation and megaesophagus on radiography at a local hospital. Dry and coarse hair coat, tail alopecia, and bradycardia were observed during physical examination. Mild, non-regenerative anemia was indicated by complete blood count (CBC) analysis. Concurrent hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglycemia were indicated by biochemistry tests. Decreased levels of total and free thyroxine (T4) and increased canine thyroid stimulating hormone (cTSH) levels were also detected. Megaesophagus was confirmed by radiographic examination. Based on the results, a diagnosis of hypothyroidism with megaesophagus was made. The patient was initially treated with levothyroxine sodium at a dosage of 0.02 mg/kg twice a day. After two weeks of treatment for hypothyroidism, the dilated esophagus returned to its original size and no further regurgitation was observed. No relapse was observed during two months of follow-up.
