  • KEPRI has completed to develop KP-ROTS Ver 1.1 and applied to 12 power transmission district offices and Je-ju branch office in KEPCO, which was updated from the exiting power restoration training simulator related to power restoration project. This program has functions such as black-start line analysis for all network blackout, restoration training on wide blackout and simple study on outage plans. KEPCO expects that local operators will train well for restoration procedures against wide blackout by using KP-ROTS.

  • This paper proposes an imputation method using a bidirectional k-nearest components search based local linear regression method. The bidirectional k-nearest-components search method selects components in the dynamic range from the missing points. Unlike the existing methods, which use a fixed-size window, the proposed method can flexibly select adjacent components in an imputation problem. The weight values assigned to the components around the missing points are calculated using local linear regression. The local linear regression method is free from the rank problem in a matrix of dependent variables. In addition, it can calculate the weight values that reflect the data flow in a specific environment, such as a blackout. The original missing values were estimated from a linear combination of the components and their weights. Finally, the estimated value imputes the missing values. In the experimental results, the proposed method outperformed the existing methods when the error between the original data and imputation data was measured using MAE and RMSE.

  • This paper presents a special protection scheme, which was established in the KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) system, against a critically low voltage profile in a part of the system after a double-circuit tower outage. Without establishing the scheme, the outage triggers the operation of a zone 3 relay and trips the component. This sequence of events possibly leads to a blackout of the local system. The scheme consists of an inter-substation communication network using PITR (Protective Integrated Transmitter and Receiver) for acquisition of the substations' data, and under-voltage load shedding devices. This paper describes the procedure for determining the load shedding in the scheme and the experiences of the implementation.

  • The MELCOR code useful for a plant-specific hydrogen risk analysis has inevitable limitations in prediction of a turbulent flow of a hydrogen mixture. To investigate the accuracy of the hydrogen risk analysis by the MELCOR code, results for the turbulent gas behavior at pipe rupture accident were compared with CFX results which were verified by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) model. The postulated accident scenario was selected to be surge line failure induced by station blackout of an Optimized Power Reactor 1000 MWe (OPR1000). When the surge line failure occurred, the flow out of the surgeline was strongly turbulent, from which the MELCOR code predicted that a substantial amount of hydrogen could be released. Nevertheless, the results indicated nonflammable mixtures owing to the high steam concentration released before the failure. On the other hand, the CFX code solving the three-dimensional fluid dynamics by incorporating the turbulence closure model predicted that the flammable area continuously existed at the jet interface even in the rising hydrogen mixtures. In conclusion, this study confirmed that the MELCOR code, which has limitations in turbulence analysis, could underestimate the existence of local combustible gas at pipe rupture accident. This clear comparison between two codes can contribute to establishing a guideline for computational hydrogen risk analysis.

  • In power system, the reactive power is closely associated with voltage. In addition Reactive power has localized characteristic. Recently wide area blackout caused by reactive power imbalance. Therefore it is important to control reactive power considering its characteristic. Until now maintenance of system voltage has been controlled by shunt compensation rather than generators. However because of a large time-constant, shunt compensators are difficult to manage disturbances immediately. In addition shunt compensation has discrete characteristic, which make disturbances in system. In this paper we studied the voltage maintenance method of local buses by controlling the reactive power output of a generator which is closely related a load bus in addition the proposed method was verified by test system.

  • An electric power system sometimes fails because of disturbances that occur unexpectedly, such as the uncontrolled loss of load that developed from cascading blackout. Which make stability through a little of under voltage load shedding should work. The development of phasor measurement unit(PMU) makes network supervision possible. The information obtained from PMU is synchronized by global positioning system(GPS). There are many real-time algorithms which are monitoring the voltage stability. This paper presents the study on the VILS(Voltage Instability Load Shedding) using PMU data. This algorithm computes Voltage Stability Margin Index(VSMI) continuously to track the voltage stability margin at local bus level. The VSMI is expressed as active and reactive power. The VSMI is used as an criterion for load shedding. In order to examine the algorithm is effective, applied to KEPCO system.

  • This paper deals with the study on repair case of journal shaft and bearing damage in 25MW industrial gas turbine caused by sudden blackout, operation mistake, and logic abnormal, etc. When a serious accident such as journal and bearing damage in a gas turbine occurs, the domestic local companies having the gas turbine are dependent on manufacturer for all maintenance and repair schedule until now. This case study shows that the damaged gas turbine is normally re-operated itself in domestic by establishing repair schedule in a short period of time, repairing damage journal shaft and tilting pad bearings, and performing rotating test for a reliability check. This paper can be regarded as the important case study of emergency test run experience of the refurbished 25MW gas turbine rotor.

  • A solar flares have the 11-year cycle and release a large energy which may produce coronal mass ejections (CME). The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) predicted that the sun spot activity will be maximized in 2013-2014. A strong solar flare can cause the disturbance of global positioning system including various communication of TV, radio broadcasting. The actual solar storm in 1989 caused power outages in Canada during 9 hours and about 600 million people had experienced a blackout. Such a solar storm can shorten the GPS satellite's life span about 5 to 10 years which can be resulted in economic loss considering the amount of multi-billion won. This paper analyzed the recent solar storm of X-class occurred on 15th of February about 10:45 this year that was reached Korea (Bohyun observatory) on 18th of February about 10:30 (local time), and compared with the data of before and after a week. The proton data of 18th of February considered that the solar strom reached on earth showed a fluctuation compared to the data of before and after a week. The positioning results at Daejeon also showed higher positioning error compared to the data of before and after a week results.
