Crack opening governs many transfer properties that play a pivotal role in durability analyses. Instead of trying to combine continuum and discrete models in computational analyses, it would be attractive to derive from the continuum approach an estimate of crack opening, without considering the explicit description of a discontinuous displacement field in the computational model. This is the prime objective of this contribution. The derivation is based on the comparison between two continuous variables: the distribution if the effective non local strain that controls damage and an analytical distribution of the effective non local variable that derives from a strong discontinuity analysis. Close to complete failure, these distributions should be very close to each other. Their comparison provides two quantities: the displacement jump across the crack [U] and the distance between the two profiles. This distance is an error indicator defining how close the damage distribution is from that corresponding to a crack surrounded by a fracture process zone. It may subsequently serve in continuous/discrete models in order to define the threshold below which the continuum approach is close enough to the discrete one in order to switch descriptions. The estimation of the crack opening is illustrated on a one-dimensional example and the error between the profiles issued from discontinuous and FE analyses is found to be of a few percents close to complete failure.
Based on plastic instability, analytical prediction of bursting failure on tube hydroforming processes under combined internal pressure and independent axial feeding is carried out. Bursting is irrecoverable phenomenon due to local instability under excessive tensile stresses. In order to predict the bursting failure, three different classical necking criteria such as diffuse necking criterion for sheet and tube, local necking criterion for sheet are introduced. The incremental theory of plasticity fur anisotropic material is adopted and then the hydroforming limit and bursting failure diagram with respect to axial feeding and hydraulic pressure are presented. In addition, the influences of the material properties such as anisotropy parameter, strain hardening exponent on bursting pressure are investigated. As results of the above approach, the hydroforming limit in view of bursting failure is verified with experimental results.

Crack initiation and propagation of blades is a serious matter in turbomachinery. Outages are common due to these problems that occur during the service of the machine resulting in a huge loss of revenue. Once in a while, the problems become serious and cause major shutdowns which can in some cases result in the loss of the whole machine in a catastrophic manner. In this presentation, we will discuss the crack initiation studies of a hydraulic machine runner blade by local stress strain approach and crack propagation at the root of a low pressure stage steam turbine blade by means of stress intensity factor approach. In both the cases, we will show how the present day technologies can predict actual field observations.
To evaluate the fatigue lifetime of structures, it is necessary to identify the value of parameters through tests or literature. it is difficult for field engineers to get the necessary data through tests from the viewpoint of time and cost. In this study. we surveyed literature and proposed a procedure to identify the fatigue parameters for fatigue life evaluation by local strain approach.
This paper proposes a simple inelastic analysis approach to efficiently map out the complete nonlinear post-collapse (strain-softening) response and the maximum load capacity of axially loaded concrete encased steel composite columns (stub and slender). The scheme simultaneously incorporates the influences of difficult instabilizing phenomena such as concrete confinement, initial geometric imperfection, geometric nonlinearity, buckling of reinforcement bars and local buckling of structural steel, on the overall behavior of the composite columns. The proposed numerical method adopts fiber element discretization and an iterative M${\ddot{u}}$ller's algorithm with an additional adaptive technique that robustly yields solution convergence. The accuracy of the proposed analysis scheme is validated through comparisons with various available experimental benchmarks. Finally, a parametric study of various key parameters on the overall behaviors of the composite columns is conducted.
This research deals with the wave dispersion analysis of functionally graded double-layered nanobeam systems (FG-DNBSs) considering the piezoelectric effect based on nonlocal strain gradient theory. The nanobeam is modeled via Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Material properties are considered to change gradually along the nanobeams' thickness on the basis of the rule of mixture. By implementing a Hamiltonian approach, the Euler-Lagrange equations of piezoelectric FG-DNBSs are obtained. Furthermore, applying an analytical solution, the dispersion relations of smart FG-DNBSs are derived by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality, length scale parameter, interlayer stiffness, applied electric voltage, relative motions and gradient index on the wave dispersion characteristics of nanoscale beam have been investigated. Also, validity of reported results is proven in the framework of a diagram showing the convergence of this model's curve with that of a previous published attempt.
This study introduces a novel approach for locating damage in a structure using wireless sensor system with local level computational capability to alleviate data traffic load on the centralized computation. Smart wireless sensor systems, capable of iterative damage-searching, mimic an optimization process in a decentralized way. The proposed algorithm tries to detect damage in a structure by monitoring abnormal increases in strain measurements from a group of wireless sensors. Initially, this clustering technique provides a reasonably effective sensor placement within a structure. Sensor clustering also assigns a certain number of master sensors in each cluster so that they can constantly monitor the structural health of a structure. By adopting a voting system, a group of wireless sensors iteratively forages for a damage location as they can be activated as needed. Since all of the damage searching process occurs within a small group of wireless sensors, no global control or data traffic to a central system is required. Numerical simulation demonstrates that the newly developed searching algorithm implemented on wireless sensors successfully localizes stiffness damage in a plate through the local level reconfigurable function of smart sensors.
