  • Our HI monster sample is a set of local HI-rich galaxies identified by the ALFALFA survey (Arecibo Legacy Fast Survey ALFA) at z<0.08. Intriguingly, they are also found with a relatively large molecular gas reservoir compared to the galaxies with similar stellar mass and color, yet their star formation rate is quite comparable to normal spirals. This makes our HI monsters good candidates of galaxies in the process of gas accretion which may lead to the stellar mass growth. One feasible explanation for their relatively low star formation activity for a given high cool gas fraction is the gas in monsters being too turbulent to form stars as normal spirals. In order to verify this hypothesis, we probe the molecular gas kinematics of 10 HI monsters which we observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). We utilize the tilted ring model to investigate what fraction of the molecular gas in the sample is regularly and smoothly rotating. In addition, we model the molecular gas disk using the GALMOD package of the Groningen Image Processing System (GIPSY) and compare with the observations to identify the gas which is offset from the 'co-planar differential rotation'. Based on the results, we discuss the possibility of gas accretion in the sample, and the potential origin of non-regularly rotating gas and the inefficient star formation.

  • In this paper, we propose a pulmonary nodule registration for the tracking of lung nodules in sequential CT scans. Our method consists of following five steps. First, a translational mismatch is corrected by aligning the center of optimal bounding volumes including each segmented lung. Second, coronal maximum intensity projection(MIP) images including a rib structure which has the highest intensity region in baseline and follow-up CT series are generated. Third, rigid transformations are optimized by normalized average density differences between coronal MIP images. Forth, corresponding nodule candidates are defined by Euclidean distance measure after rigid registration. Finally, template matching is performed between the nodule template in baseline CT image and the search volume in follow-up CT image for the nodule matching. To evaluate the result of our method, we performed the visual inspection, accuracy and processing time. The experimental results show that nodules in serial CT scans can be rapidly and correctly registered by coronal MIP-based rigid registration and local template matching.

  • The boundary has been one of the most important information in radiographic images and the degrees of difficulty involved varies greatly with the quality of the picture. These Buantifications are the means to diagnoses. The purpose of this paper is to quantify intensity variation and the threshold decision which is based on statistical principles and is developed to detect limits in liver scintigrams the entire picture is devide4 into 64 small regions. The kurtosis and variances for each smal region are used as indications to select the histograms the thresholds are computed according to the method o(maximum likelihood which minimizes the probability o( misclassification. Therefore Ive have demonstrated the applicability of the boundary detection and proved good agreement with human recognition, and we can use it for the diagnosis data of liver disease.

  • As the society increasingly embraces the high - tech digital information age, the field of image processing becomes progressively more branched out and becoming an imperative field. However, image data is deteriorated due to various causes during transmission and salt and pepper noise is typical. Typical methods for removing salt and pepper noise include CWMF, SWMF, and A-TMF. However, existing methods are somewhat insufficient in their ability to remove noise in salt and pepper noise environments. Therefore, in this paper, after it is determined whether noise removal is needed, the following measures were taken. If the center pixel was non-noise, the original pixel was preserved, If it was noise, we proposed a two - dimensional spline interpolation method and a median filter depending on the noise density of the local mask. For the purpose of objective judgment, we compared the results with that of existing methods and used PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) as a judgment criterion.

  • We develop the signal processing method for adaptive implementing direction of signal and the frequency sensitivity of human visual system(HVS). Existing multibnad energy scaling method makes ringing artifact because it does not consider signal direction. To solve this problem, we use block gradient for signal direction in addition to existing method. And we use the fact that frequency component of signal is more sensitive than value of signal over human eyes. we enhance the signal according to contrast sensitivity function(CSF) which is the model of frequency sensitivity of human eye. Compared that the existing analysis models only improve the efficiencies in the existing systems, the developed method can process the image signals to be more desirable and suitable to HVS.

  • Pore structures in porous rock play an important role in hydraulic & mechanical behaviour of rock. Porosity, size distribution and orientation of pores represent the characteristics of pore structures of porous rock. While effective porosity can be measured easily by conventional experiment, pore size distribution is hard to be quantified due to the lack of corresponding experiment. We assessed pore size distribution of Berea sandstone using X-ray CT image based analysis combined with associated images processing, i.e., image filtering, binarization and skeletonization subsequently followed by the assessment of local thickness and star chord length. The aim of this study is to propose a new and effective way to evaluate pore structures of porous rock using X-ray CT based analysis for pore size distribution.

  • Motion estimation (ME) that limits the performance of image quality and encoding speed has been developed to reduce temporal redundancy in video sequences and plays an important role in digital video compression. But it is computational demanding part of the encoder. Multi-view video is obtained by capturing one three-dimensional scene with many cameras at different positions. ME for Multi-view video requires high computational complexity. To reduce computational complexity and maintain the image quality, a fast motion estimation method is proposed in this paper. The proposed method uses a hierarchical search strategy. This strategy method consists of modified diamond search patten, multi gird diamond search pattern, and raster search pattern. These search patterns place search points symmetrically and evenly that can cover the overall search area not to fall into the local minimum or exploits the characteristics of the distribution of motion vectors to place the search points. Experiment results show that the speedup improvement of the proposed method over TZ search method (JMVC) can be up to 1.2 ~3 times faster while maintaining similar video quality and bit rates.

  • Recently, as the demand for electronic communication equipment increases, the importance of image and signal processing is increasing. However, noise is generated in digital signal due to various causes during transmission and reception, lowering equipment reliability and causing malfunction. Particularly, since AWGN may be found in most electronic equipments, AWGN removal is mandatorily performed as a preprocessing phase in various fields, such as image recognition, extraction, and segmentation. In the present paper, an AWGN removal algorithm which considers high frequency components is proposed. Conventional methods show relatively inadequate performance in images with high frequency components. To overcome this problem, proposed is a filter algorithm that add or subtract difference images in the local mask. And to verify performance of the proposed algorithm, PSNR and enlarged images are used to compare with the existing methods.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for a real-time automatic fingerprint identification system is proposed. The fingerprint feature volume is extracted by considering distinct and local characteristics(such as intensity and image quality difference etc.) in fingerprint images, which makes the algorithm properly adaptive to various image acquisitionj methods. Also the matching technique is designed to be invariant on rotation, scaling and translation (RST) changes while being capable of real-time processing. And the classification of fingerprints is performed based on the ridge flow and the relations among singular points such as cores and deltas. The developed fingerprint identification algorithm has been applied to various sets of fingerprint images such as one from NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA), a pressed fingerprint database constructed according to Korean population distributions in sex, ages and jobs, and a set of rolled-than-scanned fingerprint images. The overall performance of the algorithm has been analyzed and evaluated to the false rejection ratio of 0.07% while holding the false acceptance ratio of 0%.

  • This paper proposes fusion methods of license plate detection and super-resolution for improving license plate recognition in low-resolution images. In the proposed method, we apply the license plate detection based on local structure pattern feature and the sequential super-resolution based on Kalman filter. The proposed fusion methods are divided into two according to whether the license plate is detected or not in the input image : (i) performing license plate detection after restoring whole image through super resolution, and (ii) restoring only the detected region through super-resolution after detecting the license plate. We demonstrated effectiveness of the proposed methods in various environments.
