A full-sized model for the horizontally oriented metal cask containing 21 spent fuel assemblies has been considered to evaluate the internal natural convection behavior within a dry shield canister (DSC) filled with helium as a working fluid. A variety of two-dimensional CFD numerical investigations using a turbulent model have been performed to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics and the velocity distribution of natural convection inside the canister. The present numerical solutions for a range of Rayleigh number values ($3{\times}10^6{\sim}3{\times}10^7$) and a working fluid of air are further validated by comparing with the experimental data from previous work, and they agreed well with the experimental results. The predicted temperature field has indicated that the peak temperature is located in the second basket from the top along the vertical center line by effects of the natural convection. As the Rayleigh number increases, the convective heat transfer is dominant and the heat transfer due to the local circulation becomes stronger. The heat transfer characteristics show that the Nusselt numbers corresponding to $1.5{\times}10^6$ < Ra < $1.0{\times}10^7$ are proportional to 0.5 power of the Rayleigh number, while the Nusselt numbers for $1.0{\times}10^7$ < Ra < $8.0{\times}10^7$ are proportional to 0.27 power of the Rayleigh number. These results agreed well with the trends of the experimental data for Ra > $1.0{\times}10^7$.

Single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer were locally investigated for confined planar water jets. The detailed distributions of the wall temperature and the convection coefficient as well as the typical boiling curves were discussed. The curve for the single-phase convection indicated the developing laminar boundary layer, accompanied by monotonic increase of the wall temperature in the stream direction. Boiling was initiated from the furthest downstream as heat flux increased. Heat transfer variation according to the streamwise location was reduced as heat flux increased enough to create the vigorous nucleate boiling. Velocity effects were considered for the confined free-surface jet. Higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipient to be delayed more. The transition to turbulence precipitated by the bubble-induced disturbance was obvious only for the highest velocity, which enabled the boiling incipient to start in the middle of the heated surface, rather than the furthest downstream as was the case of the moderate and low velocities. The temperature at offset line were somewhat tower than those at the centerline for single-phase convection and partial boiling, and these differences were reduced as the nucleate boiling developed. For the region prior to transition, the convection coefficient distributions were similar in both cases while the temperatures were somewhat lower in the submerged jet. For single-phase convection, transition was initiated at $x/W{\cong}2.5$ and completed soon for the submerged jet, but the onset of transition was retarded to the distance at $x/W{\cong}6$ for the fee-surface jet.

The interaction of forced convection-conduction with thermal radiation in laminar boundary layer over a plate fin is studied numerically. The analysis is based on complete solution whereby the heat conduction equation for the fin is solved simultaneously with the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy in the fluid boundary layer adjacent to the fin. The fluid is a gray medium and diffusion(Rosseland) approximation is used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. The resulting boundary value problem are convection-conduction parameter N$_{c}$ and radiation-conduction parameter m, Prandtl number Pr. Numerical results are presented for gases with the Prandtl numbers of 0.7 & 5 with values of N$_{c}$ and M ranging from 0 to 10 respectively. The object of this study is to provide the first results on forced convection-radiation interaction in boundary layer flow over a semi-infinite flay plate which can be used for comparisons with future studies that will consider a more accurate expression for the radiative heat flux. The agreement of the results from the complete solution presented by E. M. Sparrow and those from this paper for the special case of M=0 is good. The overall rate of heat transfer from the fin considering radiative effect is higher than that from the fin neglecting radiative effect. The local heat transfer coefficient with radiative effect is higher than that without radiative effect. In the direction from tip to base, those coefficients decrease at first, attain minimum, and then increase. The larger values of N$_{c}$ M, Pr give rise to larger fin temperature variations and the fin temperature without radiative effect is always higher than that with radiative effect.
In the present study a numerical simulation is performed on a natural convection inside a square cavity with a vibrating bottom wall. The heat transfer coeffcients for various amplitudes of the bottom wall vibration were compared to the case without the bottom wall excitation. From the results, it is seen that the local temperature distribution in a cavity becomes more uniform as the amplitude of the bottom wall vibration is increased. Also, it was seen that the heat transfer coefficient increased on the heating wall as the applied amplitude increased.
A theoretical study by numerical method has been performed on the natural convection of an air contained in enclosures. The enclosures have rectangular cross section with one vertical wall heated and the other cooled, and with two horizontal partition plates of finite thermal conductivity. Steady two-dimensional flow was assumed. The computation was executed by means of the Implicit Alternating Direction (I.A.D) finite-difference method. Two partition plates of Aluminium whose thickness were 0.05mm was employed in computation. Isothemals, streamlines, local Nusselt numbers and mean Nusselt numbers were obtained for various Grashof numbers and aspect ratio and these results were compared with those in the case of the enclosure with two horizontal insulated plates. From the present results, the heat transfer in the case of partition plates was greater than that in the case of insulation. This study suggests a method to measure the overall heat-transfer of coefficient in double walls which supported by partition plates for insulative construction.

This study aims to develop explicit models to investigate thermo-mechanical interactions in moving nanobeams. These models aim to capture the small-scale effects that arise in continuous mechanical systems. Assumptions are made based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam concept and the fractional Zener beam-matter model. The viscoelastic material law can be formulated using the fractional Caputo derivative. The non-local Eringen model and the two-phase delayed heat transfer theory are also taken into account. By comparing the numerical results to those obtained using conventional heat transfer models, it becomes evident that non-localization, fractional derivatives and dual-phase delays influence the magnitude of thermally induced physical fields. The results validate the significant role of the damping coefficient in the system's stability, which is further dependent on the values of relaxation stiffness and fractional order.

Turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate was disturbed by installing an elliptic cylinder with an axis ratio of AR=2. For comparison, the same experiment was carried out for a circular cylinder having the same vertical height. The surface pressure and the heat transfer coefficient on the flat plate were measured with varying the gap distance between the elliptic cylinder and the flat plate. The mean velocity and the turbulent intensity profile of the streamwise velocity component were measured using a hot-wire anemometry. As a result, the flow structure and the local heat transfer rate were modified by the interaction between the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer as a function of the critical gap ratio where the regular vortices start to shed. For the elliptic cylinder, the critical gap ratio is increased and the surface pressure on the flat plate is recovered rapidly at downstream location, compared with the equivalent circular cylinder. The maximum heat transfer rate occurs at the gap ratio of G/B = 0.5, where the flow interaction between the lower shear layer of the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer is strong.

Experiments have been conducted to determine the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional turbulent wall attaching offset jet at different oblique angles to a flat surface. The distributions of the wall static pressure coefficient and time-averaged reattachment position for various offset ratios and oblique angles have been measured. The local Nusselt number distributions on the plate surface were also measured using liquid crystal as a temperature indicator. The new hue-capturing technique utilizing a true color image processing system was used to accurately determine the temperature of the liquid crystal. The experiments were carried out at Reynolds number, Re (based on D) of from 7300 to 21,300 with offset ratio, H/D from 2.5 to 10, and oblique angle, .alpha. from 0 deg. to 400 deg..
Characteristics of particle holdup and heat transfer were investigated in a liquid-particle swirling fluidized bed whose diameter was 0.102 m and 2.5 m in height. Effects of liquid velocity, particle size and swirling liquid ratio($R_s$) on the particle holdup and immersed heater-to-bed overall heat transfer coefficient were examined. The particle holdup increased with increasing particle size and swirling liquid ratio but decreased with increasing liquid velocity. The local particle holdup was relatively high in the region near the heater when the $R_s$ value was 0.1~0.3, but the radial particle holdup was almost uniform when the $R_s$ value was 0.5, whereas, when the $R_s$ value was 0.7, the local particle holdup was relatively low in the region near the heater. The heat transfer characteristics between the immersed heater and the bed was well analyzed by means of phase space portraits and Kolmogorov entropy(K) of the time series of temperature difference fluctuations. The phase space portraits of temperature difference fluctuations became stable and periodic and the value of Kolmogorov entropy tended to decrease with increasing the value of $R_s$ from 0.1 to 0.5. The Kolmogorov entropy exhibited its maximum value with increasing liquid velocity. The value of overall heat transfer coefficient(h) showed its maximum value with the variation of liquid velocity, bed porosity or swirling liquid ratio, but it increased with increasing particle size. The value of K exhibited its maximum at the liquid velocity at which the h value attained its maximum. The particle holdup and overall heat transfer coefficient were well correlated in terms of dimensionless groups of operating variables.

The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices were studied experimentally. The test facility consisted of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta wings protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators were varied from - 20 degree to - 45 degree, but spacings between the vortex generators were fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements were made using a five-hole pressure probe. Heat transfer measurements were made using the thermochromatic liquid to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. Unlike common flow down, common flow up vortices moved toward the centerline as they developed and interacted strongly with each other but not with the boundary layer. Spanwise profiles of Stanton number were similar for ${\beta}=-20^{\circ}\;and\;-35^{\circ}$, but not similar for ${\beta}=-45^{\circ}$. The case of ${\beta}=-20^{\circ}\;and\;-35^{\circ}$ showed the two peak Stanton number, but the case of ${\beta}=-45^{\circ}$ showed the only one peak Stanton number.
