Experimental and numerical study of shear crack propagation in concrete specimens

  • A coupled experimental-numerical study on shear fracture in concrete specimens with different geometries is carried out. The crack initiation, propagation and final breakage of concrete specimens are experimentally studied under compression loading. The load-strain and the strength of the specimens are experimentally measured, indicating decreasing effects of the shear behavior on the failure load of the specimen. The effects of specimen geometries on the shear fracturing path in the concrete specimens are also investigate. Numerical models using an indirect boundary element method are made to evaluate the crack propagation paths of concrete specimens. These numerical results are compared with the performed experiments and are validated experimentally.

  • VTR(Video Tape Recorder) has very complicated mechanisms composed of various cams, links, gears and so on. To satisfy kinematic requirements of VTR components, various geometric constraints between rigid bodies and a translational cam design program are developed. Mechanisms of VTR are divided into functional groups like a control part, a loading part and a tape guide part. Each group is modeled for kinematic and dynamic analysis. Finally, all groups are combined together for a complete VTR model and loads required for each function of VTR controls are studied. Detailed description of developed programs are presented and result are discussed.

  • Densification behavior of aluminum alloy(A16061) powder was investigated under cold compaction. Experimental data were obtained under triaxial compression with various loading conditions. A special form of the Cap model was proposed from experimental data of A16061 powder under triaxial compression. The proposed yield function and several yield functions in the literature were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification behavior of A16061 powder under cold isostatic pressing and die compaction. The agreement between finite element calculations from the proposed yield function and experimental data is very good under cold isostatic pressing and die compaction.

  • A metal fiber bed has seldom been applied to the practical filtration process despite its excellent mechanical and chemical stability. The filter-bed used in this work was highly porous with open structure, of which apparent porosity was 80 ∼ 90%. Although pressure loss across the filter-bed was very low, separation efficiency was found to be quite high. This paper focuses on the basic filtration mechanisms of a metal filter-bed and a thin ceramic filter from fly ash for reference. The experimental parameters were face velocity, dust loading and porosity of filter-bed. Pressure drop increased with increasing face velocity and dust feeding load for both filters. It also showed that dust particles deposited in the deep flow path, finally resulting in clogging the pore channels. It thereby indicates that the dominating mechanism of the metal filter-bed would be depth filtration. Meanwhile, the thin fly ash composite filters trapped the aerated dust mainly on the surface of the filter medium, so that the instantaneously formed dust layer might cause a steep increase of pressure drop across the filtration system.

  • The integrity of laser welded structures is decided with fracture strength and fatigue strength. This study presents fracture behavior considering residual stress in the laser welding. Experiments are conducted and analyses are performed to explore the influence of residual stress on fracture behavior of bead-on laser welded compact specimen. Fracture experiments are performed using ASTM 1820. The performed analyses included thermo-elasto-plastic analyses for residual stress and subsequent J-integral calculation. A modified J integral is calculated in the presence of residual stresses. The J-integral is path-independent for combination of residual stress field and stress due to mechanical loading. The results indicates that the tensile residual stress near crack front bring the low fracture load while the compressive residual stress bring the high fracture load compared to no residual stress specimen. These results quantitatively understand the influence of residual stress on fracture behavior.

  • This paper is a presentation of an experimental study about the elastic-partly plastic behavior of rectangular hollow steel pinned struts subjected to static cyclic axial loading and the evaluation of the compressive strength of retrofitted crooked struts. Retrofitting is achieved by welding stiffening plates along the webs of damaged struts. The material follows a quasi-kinematic hardening hysteresis path as observed from coupon tests. Test results are compared to those of an analytical model showing a good agreement for both standard and retrofitted struts. The comparison of different stiffener plate dimensions shows that more efficient strengthening is achieved by using long thin stiffeners rather than short thick ones.

Sequential pattern load modeling and warning-system plan in modular falsework

  • This paper investigates the structural behavior of modular falsework system under sequential pattern loads. Based on the studies of 25 construction sites, the pattern load sequence modeling is defined as models R (rectangle), L and U. The study focuses on the system critical loads, regions of largest reaction forces, discrepancy between the pattern load and the uniform load, and the warning-system plan. The analysis results show that the critical loads of modular falsework systems with sequential pattern loads are very close to those with the uniform load used in design. The regions of largest reaction forces are smaller than those calculated by the uniform load. However, the regions of largest reaction forces of three models under sequential pattern loads can be considered as the crucial positions of warning-system based on the measured index of loading. The positions of the sensors for the warning-system for these three different models are not identical.

  • Tube hydroforming is recently drawing attention of automotive industries due to its several advantages over conventional methods. It can produce wide range of products such as subframes, engine cradles, and exhaust manifolds with cheaper production cost by reducing overall number of processes. h successful tube hydroforming depends on the reasonable combination of the internal pressure and axial load at the tube ends. This paper deals with the optimal process design of hydroforming process using the genetic algorithm and neural network. An optimization technique is used in order to minimize the tube thickness variation by determining the optimal loading path in the tube expansion forming and the tube T-shape forming process.

  • Train crashes involve complex interaction between deformable bodies in multiple collisions. The purpose of this study is to suggest the effective analytical procedure using simple model for the crashworthiness of motorized trailer of high speed train. The simple model, with very short modeling time and reduced computation time was adopted to extract the global behaviour and to perform a pre-optimization of the considered structure. Firstly, various types of crash events are investigated and the conditions for numerical simulation are defined. The simple model, using the beam and non-linear spring element, and shell element model are used to evaluated energy absorption and deformation mechanism in analyses. And aluminum is applied to real model after verification with square tube analyses. Finally, loading path and energy absorption of main components are evaluated. The analyses are aimed to ensure the crashworthiness design of high speed train.
