  • Recently, the design process for a railway bogie frame in Europe has been carried out according to the norm EN 13749. The activities in the norm EN shall demonstrate that the design of the bogie frame fulfills the acceptances of 4 steps of the program such as structural calculation, static tests, fatigue test and on-tracks tests. At the end of the acceptance program, the on-tracks tests have the aim to measure the real stress history generated in operation and to verify that they are reasonably next to those calculated and measured on the test rig. Therefore, in order to assure the safety of the railway vehicle, it is important to examined the durability of that under load histories measured from on-tracks tests. In this study, under variable amplitude loading based on the actual acceleration history, fatigue analysis of the welding bogie frame is investigated by using durability software. Moreover, the fatigue life of the frame under the loading in the norm EN fatigue test condition is evaluated and compared with the life under variable amplitude loading.

  • This paper presents experimental study on effects of width-to-thickness ratio and loading history on cyclic rotational capacity of H-shaped steel beams subjected to pure bending. Eight Class 3 and 4 H-shaped beams with large width-to-thickness ratios were tested under four different loading histories. The coupling effect of local buckling and cracking on cyclic rotational capacity of the specimens was investigated. It was found that loss of the load-carrying capacity was mainly induced by local buckling, and ductile cracking was a secondary factor. The width-to-thickness ratio plays a dominant effect on the cyclic rotational capacity, and the loading history also plays an important role. The cyclic rotational capacity can decrease significantly due to premature elasto-plastic local buckling induced by a number of preceding plastic reversals with relative small strain amplitudes. This result is mainly correlated with the decreasing tangent modulus of the structural steel under cyclic plastic loading. In addition, a theoretical approach to evaluate the cyclic rotational capacity of H-shaped beams with different width-to-thickness ratios was also proposed, which compares well with the experimental results.

  • The substance of the use of the derived non-linear creep constitutive equations under variable stress levels (see first part of the paper, Kmet 2004) is explained and the strategy of their application is outlined using the results of one-step creep tests of the steel spiral strand rope as an example. In order to investigate the creep strain increments of cables an experimental set-up was originally designed and a series of tests were carried out. Attention is turned to the individual main steps in the production and application procedure, i.e., to the one-step creep tests, definition of loading history, determination of the kernel functions, selection and definition of constitutive equation and to the comparison of the resulting values considering the product and the additive forms of the approximation of the kernel functions. To this purpose, the parametrical study is performed and the results are presented. The constitutive equations of non-linear creep of cable under variable stress history offer a strong tool for the real simulation of stochastic variable load history and prediction of realistic time-dependent response (current deflection and stress configuration) of structures with cable elements. By means of suitable stress combination and its gradual repeating various loads and times effects can be modelled.

  • The effect of loading path changes on the strain and mechanical properties of a commercial pure aluminum was studied using flat rolling and groove rolling. Material during flat rolling undergoes a continuous monotonic compressive loading, while one during groove rolling experiences a series of cross compressive loading. Four-pass flat rolling and groove rolling experiment are designed such that the aluminum undergoes the same amount of the strain at each pass. The rolling experiment was performed at room temperatures. Specimens for tensile test are fabricated from the plate and bar rolled. In addition, the strain distribution for the plate and bar cold rolled specimens is also calculated by finite element method. The results reveal that differences of loading path attributed by monotonic loading(flat rolling) and cross loading(groove rolling) significantly influence the mechanical properties such as yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, strain hardening and elongation. It is clear that the different loading path can give raise to change the deformation history, although it is deformed with same amount of strain for same material.

  • This study investigated the effects of stress and time history of overconsolidated clayey soils on pore pressure parameter, A. Laboratory tests were carried out under the conditions of both varying stress and time history. The stress history is classified into (i) rotation angle of stress path, (ii) overconsolidation ratio, and (iii) magnitude of length of recent stress path. The time history is divided into (i) loading rate of recent stress path and (ii) rest time. Pore pressure parameters are different both in the magnitude and trend with the rotation angle, depending on the magnitude of overconsolidation ratio but not in a trend. In addition, the pore pressure parameters have no effects on the magnitude of length of recent stress path except the level of initially small strain, while loading rates of recent stress path have effects on it. Finally, the pore pressure parameters of overconsolidated clays increase with the existence of the rest time, until either the deviator stress exceeds 70 kPa or the strain up to 0.1%.

  • This paper aimed to investigate the damage process of steel parts experiencing failure under strong repeated loading. Likewise, a damage index using various factors related to the damage was proposed. An analysis method for evaluating the damage state was also developed. The damage assessment method focused on the local strain history at the cross-section of the heaviest concentration of deformation. Cantilever-type steel parts were analyzed under uniaxial load combined with a constant axial load, considering horizontal displacement history, Loading patterns and steel types were considered as the main parameters in analyzing the models. The effects of the parameters on the failure modes, deformation capacity, and damage process as seen from the analysis results were also discussed. Each failure process was compared as steel types. In addition, the failure of steel parts under strong repeated loading was determined according to loading. Results revealed that the state of the failure is closely related to the local plastic strain.

  • CWR (continuous welded rail) tracks on high-speed railway bridges have much more complicated axial force distributions caused by track-bridge interaction than those behaviors on embankments, and additional problems caused by track-structure interaction with the axial force of the CWR. In order to analyze and limit other physical phenomena caused by track-bridge interaction, a design guideline (KR C-08080, longitudinal track-bridge interaction analysis) is used when designing CWR track on bridges. Domestic analysis and design methods for track-bridge interaction follow the UIC 774-3R, and they suggest conservative methods and deterministic properties. Recently, many studies analyzing the methods of track-bridge interaction considering the loading history are being carried out; however, there has been insufficient studies of the variation of the resistance properties with a consideration of the actual loading history. In this study, the performances of rail fastening systems used for concrete track on bridges were tested and analyzed while considering the loading history. For this purpose, longitudinal and vertical loading combinations, applied in order to simulate the practical conditions and resistance characteristics (stiffness and elastic limit displacement), are analyzed through the experimental results. Also, a comparison study was conducted with the properties in the KR Code.

  • Container load problems are conventional issues in history. Loading cylindrical or rectangle packages in restricted space is required to be efficient to minimize remaining area. Many people have depended on experience or known simple algorithms for a long time. Recently systematic algorithms are published over the world with developed computer technology. Maximal rectangles algorithm is well known to load arbitrary rectangles in a larger rectangle container with the organized manners. However, this algorithm has significant drawbacks, which are influenced by orientation of input load. We propose post-selective method to complement these orientation effects, which is found out to improve the loading efficiency.

  • Under variable amplitude loading conditions, retardation or accelerated condition of fatigue crack growth occurs with every cycle, Because fatigue crack growth behavior varied depend on load time history. The modeling of stress amplitude with storm loading acted to ships and offshore structures applied this paper. The crack closure behavior examine by recording the variation in load-strain relationship. By taking process mentioned above, fatigue crack growth rate, crack length, stress intensity factor, and crack closure stress intensity factor were obtained from the stress cycles of each type of storm ; A(6m), B(7m), C(8m), D(9m), E(11m) and F(15m) which was wave height. It showed that the good agreement with between the experiment results and simulation of storm loads. So this estimated method of crack propagtion rate gives a good criterion for the safe design of vessels and marine structure.

  • The methodology of a simple probabilistic fatigue crack under random loading is proposed. Using the crack closure concept, the crack opening stress is assumed to be constant during random loading. The loading history was analyzed to determine the probability density functions, probability distribution functions and other related parameters for the probabilistic fatigue crack growth analysis. Fatigue crack growth using the exisiting available data was predicted by the proposed probabilistic analysis and compared with experimental data.
