Strength Properties of High-Strength Concrete Piles Using an Industrial by-Product (산업부산물을 치환한 고강도 콘크리트 말뚝의 강도 특성)

  • The necessity for ground reinforcement of structures has been increasing in South Korea because buildings have encountered constructional problems such as inclined structures and collapses caused by earthquakes or differential settlement of the foundations. With regard to a ground reinforcement method, an increasing number of high-strength concrete piles have been used based on their advantages, including a wide range of penetration depth and a high load-bearing capacity. However, problems such as the destruction of a pile head during on-site placement work can occur when the pile has insufficient strength. For this reason, the strength of such piles should be managed more thoroughly. Thus, this study analyzed the strength properties of high-strength concrete piles using blast furnace slag (BFS) powder as a cement replacement, which was generated as an industrial byproduct. The analysis results indicated that the compression strength of the concrete piles increased when 10% to 20% of the cement was replaced with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS). In addition, the compression strength of the concrete piles was calculated to be 80.6 MPa when 20% of the cement was replaced with GGBS, which was greater by 5% than that of an ordinary Portland cement (OPC) specimen.

  • Compaction is performed in civil engineering sites to secure the stability of the ground and prevent settlement. While the process of compaction is crucial, it is also essential to evaluate the degree of compaction after the completion of the process. In domestic sites, the evaluation of compaction is mainly conducted on a small number of spot using point-based tests such as plate load tests and sand cone tests. The methods presented so far allow assessment of surface compaction, but evaluating compaction in deeper layers poses challenges. Moreover, due to the limited coverage of point-based testing, it is difficult to achieve an overall assessment of compaction. As a solution to these issues, the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (SASW) tests were utilized to evaluate compaction. SASW tests offer a broader measurement range compared to point-based tests, and depending on the test setup, this method can provide the stiffness of the ground at greater depths. In this study, SASW tests were conducted in a compacted soil site under different conditions to assess compaction. Additionally, Nuclear Density Gauge tests were conducted concurrently to compare and verify the results of SASW. The research results confirmed the feasibility of evaluating compaction using SASW at the geotechnical site.

Effect of various abutment systems on the removal torque and the abutment settling in the conical connection implant systems (원추형 연결 임플란트에서 지대주 종류에 따른 나사풀림과 침하현상에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different abutment materials on abutment screw loosening and settling-down effect in conical connection type implant system. Materials and methods: Three types of abutment, cementation, gold UCLA, and metal UCLA abutment were used. Two UCLA groups were fabricated in a similar pattern to cementation abutment. Type III gold alloy and Nickel-Chromium alloy was used for casting gold UCLA abutment and metal UCLA abutment, respectively. Fixture and abutment were tightened to 30 Ncm by using digital torque controller and re-tightening was conducted with same force after 10 minutes. Digital torque gauge was used to measure loosening torque and fixture/abutment length was measured by digital micrometer. Dynamic loads between 25 N and 250 N were applied with $0^{\circ}$ angle to the abutment axis. After loading, fixture/abutment length was re-measured and amount of settlement was calculated. Loosening torque value was also measured for comparison Results: All three groups showed significant differences of length when comparing before and after loading, but there was no significant difference of settling amount in all groups. Loosening torque values were significantly decreased when comparing before and after loading in all groups($P$<.05). However, there was no significant difference in loss of loosening torque values when compared to groups. Conclusion: In internal conical connection type implants, dynamic load affected on settlement and loosening torque of implant, but there was no differences between abutments materials. Likewise gold UCLA abutment, metal UCLA abutment might be able to withstand functional load.

  • The reliable estimation of pile bearing capacity is essential for the improvement of the re- liability and the cost-effectiveness of the design. There have been numerous pile bearing capacity prediction methods proposed up to now, however, execpt for the estimation made from the result of the pile loading test, not one method is appropriate for the reliable prediction. Due to the considerable time and expenses required to carry out the pile loading test, the test has seldom been utilized. The development of Simple Pile Loading Test(SPLT) which utilizes the pile skin friction as the required reaction force to cause the pile tip settlement, provides a solution to perform more pile loading tests and consequently a more economical pile design is possible. The separate measurement of skin friction and tip resistance during the course of performing SPLT provides a better understanding of the pile behavior than the result of the conventional pile loading test where only the total resistance is measured. On the other hand, there are some points to be clarified in order to apply the test results of SPLT to practical problem. They are the direction of the applied load to mobilize the skin friction and the use of reduced sized sliding core. In this research, both the SPLT and the conventional pile loading test on 406mm diameter steel pipe pile have been performed. From the result, it would be safe to use the measured SPLT skin friction value directly in the design, since the value is somewhat lower than the value measured in the conventional test. It is further assumed that the tip resistance value of the reduced sized sliding core should properly be analysed by taking the incluonce of scale effect into consideration.

Effects of Various Loading Periods on the Consolidation Characteristics of Remolded Clay - With Special Reference to Gwangyang Marine Clayey Soil - (하중재하기간이 재성형 점토의 압밀특성에 미치는 영향 - 광양항 해성점토를 중심으로 -)

  • This study sets it's face to define effects of the various loading periods in normal consolidation area on clay's compression and long-term consolidation characteristics through a laboratory test using homogeneous remolded clay. Moreover, by carrying out a long-term consolidation test which diversifies initial consolidation applicable to effective overburden loading in the various loading period. This study intended to suggest the method predicting the final settlement on the basis of loading periods by comparing and analyzing compression curve's characteristics according to loading weight of each stage and increase in loading period when carrying out the standard consolidation test. From the test results, the study shows that as of the soft clay's compression characteristics on the basis of various loading periods, preconsolidation load has a tendency to be decreased slightly as the loading period is getting more and more longer at each step after initial consolidation load puts on the remolded clay which is caused by secondary consolidation's increase in the latter part of each phase. And those effects have an weaker influence on compression index in normal consolidation area at the same time as secondary consolidation brought out quasi-overconsolidation and stabilization of clay's structure, have an influence re-compression index is increased in overconsolidation area on the other hand.

Investigation of Stiffness Characteristics of Subgrade Soils under Tracks Based on Stress and Strain Levels (응력 및 변형률 수준을 고려한 궤도 흙노반의 변형계수 특성 분석)

  • In this study, the so-called repeated plate load bearing test (RPBT) used to get $E_{v2}$ values in order to check the degree of compaction of subgrade, and to get design parameters for determining the thickness of the trackbed foundation, is investigated. The test procedure of the RPBT method is scrutinized in detail. $E_{v2}$ values obtained from the field were verified in order to check the reliability of the test data. The $E_{v2}$ values obtained from high-speed rail construction sites were compared to converted modulus values obtained from resonant column (RC) test results. For these tests, medium-size samples composed of the same soils from the field were used after analyzing stress and strain levels existing in the soil below the repeated loading plates. Finite element analyses, using the PLAXIS and ABAQUS programs, were performed in order to investigate the impact of the strain influence coefficient. This was done by getting newly computed $I_z$ to get the precise strain level predicted on the subgrade surface in the full track structure; under wheel loading. It was verified that it is necessary to use precise loading steps to construct nonlinear load-settlement curves from RPBT in order to get correct $E_{v2}$ values at the proper strain levels.

  • The concrete wall is the most useful of retaining structure which can obtain the engineering stability, but has problems that is not friendly with nature environment in a fine view, such as poor rear drainage, and shrinkage crack by temperature difference, etc. Because of this problems, the research for a segmental crib retaining wall has been performed. A segmental crib retaining wall is quickly and easily erected because is possible to be erected as the individual members, and is not sensitive to differential settlement and earthquakes. Also, it shows effective drainage and has a friendly advantage with nature environment because of being able to be planted with vines and shrubs in retaining walls The design of crib retaining walls has traditionally been based on classical soil mechanics theories. These theories, originally derived by Rankine(1857) and Coulomb(1776), assume that the wall acts as a rigid body. This assumption results in failure being predicted by either monolithic overturning or base sliding mechanisms. However, the wall consists of individual members which have been created a three dimensional grid. This grid confines an fill mass which becomes part of the wall. The filled wall resists the earth pressure with the same mechanism of classical gravity walls. Because of the flexibility of the individual segment, it allows relative movement between the individual members within the wall. The three dimensional flexible grid leads to stress redistribution when the wall is subjected to external or fill loads. Due to the flexibility and the stress redistribution, the failure of segmental crib wall consists of not only overturing and base sliding but the local deformation and the failure between the segmental members. It has been researched in the field that due to this flexibility and load redistribution, serviceability failure of segmental crib walls is unlikely to be due to overturning or base sliding. Therefore, in this study, the relative displacement appearance of retaining wall due to variation of inclination is measured to examine this behavior characteristics. Also, the behavior characteristics of retaining walls by surcharge load, and location of acting point of retaining wall rear, and the displacement characteristics and deflections are estimated about the existence and nonexistence of Rear Stretcher performing an role in transmitting earth pressure of Header and Stretcher organizing retaining walls.   • The numerical analysis on PHC piles socketed into weathered rocks through sandy soil layers was conducted to propose the table solution or the chart solution to obtain the mobilization capacity. The mobilization capacity was determined at the settlement of 5% pile diameter and applied a safety factor of 3.0. In order to utilize the excellent compressive strength of the PHC pile effectively, it is recommended that the allowable bearing capacity of ground would be designed to be more than the long-term allowable compressive pile load. A procedure for determining an allowable pile capacity for PHC piles socketed into weathered rocks through sandy soil layers is given by the sum of the allowable skin friction of the sandy soil layer and the weathered rock layer and the allowable end bearing capacity of the weathered rock layer. The design efficiency of the PHC pile is about 85% at the reasonable design stage in the verification of the newly proposed method. Thus, long-term allowable compressive load (Pall) level of PHC piles can be utilized in the optimal design stage.

Estimation on Discharge Capacity of Prefabricated Vortical Drains Considering Influence Factors (영향인자를 고려한 연직배수재의 통수능 평가)

  • The prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) are one of the most widely used techniques to accelerate the consolidation of soft clay deposits and dredged soil. Discharge capacity is one of the factors affecting the behavior of PVDs. In the field, a PVD is confined by clay or dredged soil, which is normally remolded during PVD installation. Under field conditions, soil particles may enter the PVD drainage channels, and the consolidation settlement of the improved subsoil may cause 131ding of the PVD. These factors will affect the discharge capacity of the PVDs. In this study an experimental study was carried out to estimate the discharge capacity of three different types of PVDs by utilizing the large-scale laboratory model testing and small-scale laboratory model testing equipments. The several factors such as confinement condition (confined by soft marine clay or dredged soil) and variations of the discharge capacity were studied with time under soil specimen confinement, The test results indicated that discharge capacity decreases with increasing load, time, and hydraulic gradient. With load application, the cross-sectional area of the drainage channel of PVD decreases because the filter of PVD is pressed into the core. The discharge capacity of the soft marine clay-confined PVDs is much lower than that of the dredged soil-confined PVDs.

  • In a banking process for construction of a complex, non-compaction construction has been applied in most sites, which is a method that soils are compacted by the equipment load without being compacted separately. However, there are no specific descriptions in the construction manual or specifications, so it is unclear to evaluate the excavation volume. Hence, this study is a basic study to compare the soil conversion factor at a design stage and the actual soil conversion factor of a banking ground under a non-compaction condition in order to examine the feasibility in constructing the ground for construction of the complex and to examine appropriateness of the earth work in the site by conducting an indoor, field, and load-settlement test and proposing a reasonable soil conversion factor. Under the non-compaction condition, the soil conversion factor C is set to be 1.0 at the design stage, but the result of the field test was 0.86 which is smaller than the value at the design stage. It was expected that this result would increase the banking volume, and the construction result actually showed a difference in the banking volume. Therefore, for the baking ground under the non-compaction condition, it is necessary to apply the value C suitable for the site condition after performing test by considering the site's condition and the banking height.
