The Objective of this work was to design Surface Antenna Structure (SAS) and investigate fatigue behavior of SAS that was asymmetric sandwich structure. This term, SAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constant and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, SSFIP elements inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at a resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was $16\;{\times}\;8$ array antenna. From electrical measurements, it was shown that antenna performances were in good agreement with design requirements. In cyclic 4-point bending, flexure behavior was investigated by static and fatigue test. Fatigue life curve of SAS was obtained. The fatigue load was determined experimentally at a 0.75(1.875kN) load level. SAS concept is the first serious attempt at integration for both antenna and composite engineers and promises innovative future communication technology.
Under cyclic loading, the fatigue failures of welded joints occur at weld toes which induce stress concentration by weld shape. So we need to obtain the peak stress and the S-N curve to assess the fatigue strength of welded joints. However the measurement of peak stress is of high uncertainty and low reproducibility, so we use nominal stress instead in fatigue tests of welded joints. In this study, fatigue tests to obtain S-N curves and FE analyses to obtain stress concentration factors were conducted for the two types of cruciform fillet welded joints, that is, load-carrying and non load-carrying types. Then we changed the obtained S-N curves to that based on peak stress using the hot-spot stress concept. From the analyses of the S-N curves obtained, we have concluded that there is a need to develop a new method to evaluate the fatigue life.
The fatigue tests were performed on the high strength concrete beams with single edged notch which was reinforced steel fiber. The steel fibers were used 1.0 percent by volume fraction. These were tested consists of constant amplitude tests for different levels of loading. The test program included endurance limit with repect to flexural fatigue and relation of load-CMOD(crack mouth opening displacement). The results of test, it is found from S-N curve that the fatigue strength for a life of 2 million cycles of load was approximately 70percent with respect to the static ultimate strength .
In this study, a small punch creep (SP-Creep) test using miniaturized specimen has been described for the development of the new creep test method for high temperature structural components such as headers and tubes of boiler, turbine casing and rotor, and reactor vessel. The SP-Creep testing technique has been applied to 1Cr-0.5Mo steel used widely as boiler header material and the creep test temperature are varied at $550^{\circ}C{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. From the experimental results, e.g. SP-Creep curve behaviors, the creep rate in steady state and creep rupture life with test temperature and load, the load exponential value(n, m), the activation energy($Q_{spc}$), the Monkman-Grant relation and the creep life assessment equation etc., it can be summarized that the SP-Creep test may be a useful test method to evaluate the creep properties of the heat resisting material such as boiler header.
It is essential to reduce track maintenance costs and to extend the periodic replacements of continuous welded rails based on accumulated passing tonnage. As recently train load decrease and rail joints wear down less, the periodic replacements of continuous welded rails can be extended. There are many kinds of rail damage like squat, head-check and corrugation. These can be taken nondestructive or naked eye test. So the periodic replacements of continuous welded rails based on accumulated passing tonnage were examine with focusing on a crack of rail bottom of continuous welded rail. Therefore, this study measure dynamic response of track by metro train load, it compute impact coefficient and track spring coefficient for estimating a condition of actual track system. Also, it is converted the measured stress waveform into stress frequency histogram by the rain-flow counting methods, and then the equivalence of stress is calculated. As apply s-n curve of a new welded rail, accumulated fatigue damage ratio of laid rail and remaining service lives is estimated. This study suggest a plan of the periodic replacements of continuous welded rails based on accumulated passing tonnage classified by the types of track system.
In this study, to evaluate conservatism of various fatigue life evaluation procedures, fatigue tests were conducted using compact tension (CT) specimens with a round notch, made of A516 Gr.70 carbon steel and A240 TP304 stainless steel, under load-controlled cyclic condition. Experimental fatigue failure cycles were measured and compared with predicted fatigue lives using two different life evaluation methods; (1) Design-By-Analysis (DBA) procedure given in ASME B&PV Code, Sec. III, Div. 1, Subsec. NB-3200 and (2) structural stress-based approach provided in ASME B&PV Code, Sec. VIII, Div. 2, Part 5. To predict fatigue failure cycles, three-dimensional elastic finite element analysis was conducted. Fatigue lives were predicted by both design fatigue curve given in ASME B&PV Code, Sec. III, Div. 1, Appendices and best-fit fatigue curve suggested in NUREG/CR-6815 for the DBA procedure. Finally, fatigue lives evaluated by various methods were compared with test results, and then conservatism between each evaluation procedure was discussed.
In this report, a method to predict the fatigue strength in welded structure member of ship construction is studied considering the effects of statistical characteristics of mild steels and weld toe shapes on the fatigue crack initiation life. The fatigue test under pulsating bending load is carried out with the model specimens of the web frame in double bottom of ship hull. The propriety of the fatigue life curve with probability of failure in the transverse strength members of ship hull construction is confirmed by the comparison with the results of fatigue test on the model of the various transverse strength members.
The present study aims to design a multilayer microstrip antenna with composite sandwich construction and investigate fatigue behavior of this multilayer SAS (surface antenna structure) that was asymmetric sandwich structure for the next generation of structural surface technology. This term, SAS, indicates that the structural surface becomes an antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constant and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, antenna elements inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at a resonant frequency of 12.2 GHz. From electrical measurements, it was shown that antenna performances were in good agreement with design requirements. In cyclic 4-point bending, flexure behavior was investigated by static and fatigue test. Fatigue life curve of the SAS was obtained. The experimental results of bending fatigue were compared with single load level fatigue life prediction equations and in good agreement. The SAS concept is can be extended to give a useful guide for manufacturers of structural body panels as well as antenna designers.
An end beam is one of the most important structural members supporting uncovered freight under in-service loading. In general, it needs to endure over 25 years. However fatigue fracture has occurred at dynamic stress concentration location of the end beam because user's specifications demanded high speed and vehicle manufacturer made the uncovered freight car with comparatively low strength and stiffness. For durability analysis, finite element analysis is performed to evaluate the problem of uncovered freight structure and local strain. The uncovered freight car was operated on actual problematic railroad line to measure dynamic stress versus time history on the critical part from which a crack is initiated often. Rainflow cycle counting method was used to estimate fatigue damage at dangerous area under operating condition. Therefore, this study shows that analytical fatigue life at the end beam can be predicted on the basis of S-N curve and structure analysis and has a fairly good correlation with experimental fatigue life.
