This paper presents a disturbance observer-based robust backstepping load-following control (DO-RBLFC) scheme for modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (MHTGRs) in the presence of actuator saturation and disturbances. Based on reactor kinetics and temperature reactivity feedback, the mathematical model of the MHTGR is first established. After that, a DO is constructed to estimate the unknown compound disturbances including model uncertainties, external disturbances, and unmeasured states. Besides, the actuator saturation is compensated by employing an auxiliary function in this paper. With the help of the DO, a robust load-following controller is developed via the backstepping technique to improve the load-following performance of the MHTGR subject to disturbances. At last, simulation and comparison results verify that the proposed DO-RBLFC scheme offers higher load-following accuracy, better disturbances rejection capability, and lower control rod speed than a PID controller, a conventional backstepping controller, and a disturbance observer-based adaptive sliding mode controller.
In this paper, we deal with a precise position synchronous control of four-axes system which is working under various load disturbances. Each axis driving system is consisted of a speed controller and an acceleration controller as an inner loop instead of conventional current control scheme. The acceleration control plays an important roll to suppress load disturbances quickly. Also, each axis is coupled by a maximum position synchronous error comparison to minimize position synchronous errors according to integration of speed differency. As a result, the proposed system enables precise synchronous control with good robustness against load disturbances during transient as well as steady state. The stability and robustness of the proposed system are investigated through its frequency characteristic and numerical simulations. Finally, experimental results under load disturbances demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system fur four-axes position synchronous control.
The predictive speed control (PSC) strategy can realize the simultaneous control of speed and current by using one cost function. As a model-based control method, the performance of the PSC is vulnerable to model mismatches such as load torque disturbances and parameter uncertainties. To solve this problem, this paper presents a robust predictive speed control (RPSC) strategy for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives. The proposed RPSC uses extended state observers (ESOs) to estimate the lumped disturbances caused by load torque changes and parameter mismatches. The observer-based prediction model is then compensated by using the estimated disturbances. The introduction of ESOs can achieve robustness against predictive model uncertainties. In addition, a modified cost function is designed to further suppress load torque disturbances. The performance of the proposed RPSC scheme has been corroborated by experimental results under the condition of load torque changes and parameter mismatches.
This paper presents a load frequency control by optimal linear tracking, which can be well adapted to practical power systems with successive load disturbances. Conventional Load Frequency Controls (LEC's) have a feedback control scheme of the state error deviated from the post-disturbance steady state. This requires the modification of reference everytime the system encounters load changes. In this study, a new feedback scheme of LEC is developed by using the optimal linear tracking method with a fixed reference. As a result, the proposed LFC, which requires no reference modification, can be efficiently applied to power systems with successive disturbances such as load changes due to the on-off operations of reclosers or feeder switches. Another feature of the proposed LFC is that it adopts an algorithm to calculate an optimal post-fault steady state with the consideration of control input changes. The proposed LFC has been tested for a 2-area power system, which shows that it can be well adapted to successive load disturbances with good frequency response.

The loads exerted on electro-hydraulic servo system are classified into inertial, viscous, and spring load. The additional load called disturbances is also exerted on system but is generally not modeled. To deal with these kinds of loads, it is necessary to maintain the continuous signal transfer, so we can construct compensator to satisfy control specifications using feedback signal such as displacement, velocity, acceleration and pressure known as state variables. In case of controlling the speed of hydraulic motor, we must keep up robust performance for the various loads and disturbances acted on the system. However, the load flow rate in the valve is characterized by nonlinearity so that traditional theory of linear control could not be expected to give the desired performance. In this paper, it is shown that speed controller of hydraulic motor gives a good command following and disturbance rejection performance by applying sliding mode theory as a way of robust control to the nonlinearity, variation of loads and disturbances.
The overall performance of AC servo system is greatly affected by the uncertainties of unpredictable mechanical parameter variations and external load disturbances. Therefore, to compensate this problem, it is necessary to know different parameters and load disturbances subjected to position/speed control. This paper proposes an online identification method of mechanical parameters/load disturbances for AC servo system using Support Vector Regression (SVR). The proposed methodology advocates analytic parameter regression directly from the training data, rather than adaptive controller and observer approaches commonly used in motion control applications. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SVR algorithm is appropriate for control of unknown servo systems even with large measurement noise.
Output voltage waves of a DC/AC inverter system are likely to be distorted if variable loads e.g. motors or rectifiers exist in the output terminal. This paper designs a disturbance observer-based PI controller for a single-phase inverter system that is robust against load changes. In this paper, we regard the output voltage changes due to various loads as disturbances of the control system, Then we design a disturbance observer for estimation of the disturbances caused by the load current and any other error sources (such as parameter uncertainties and model mismatches etc.). In order to test the performance of the proposed control law, simulation studies are carried out for a single-phase inverter system using SimPowerSystems of Matlab Simulink. Compared to a simple PI control, the disturbance observer-based controller shows enhanced performance in transient responses for step load changes.
This study deals with the speed control of an overcentered variable-displacement hydraulic motor on a constant pressure network, which is noted for its high system efficiency fast dynamic response and energy recovery capability. The speed control characteristics of the conventional cascade PI controller are largely affected by load-torque disturbances. To obtain robust speed control despite torque disturbances, the load torque is estimated by an observer based on a mathematical model and compensated for by a feedforward loop. It is shown by experiment that robust speed control may be obtained with the proposed controller. The experimental data agree fairly well with the theoretical analysis.
Computers and automatic equipment are very sensitive to the disturbances such as voltage transients, voltage sag, and harmonics. These disturbances cause them to have a malfunction or fault which brings about damages and losses. UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and SPS(stand-by power supply) have been used to provide the required voltage in a critical load without disturbances. However, UPS has appreciable losses due to the operation of the inverter in full rated power at all times. SPS, although whose inverter losses are smaller than those of UPS, transfers disturbances with a short duration to the load, due to the limited reaction time. In this research, a dynamic voltage compensator, which can make up for the weakness of UPS and SPS, is proposed. The operation of the proposed system was verified by a computer simulation. A hardware scaled-model was fabricated and tested to conform the feasibility of the actual system development.
