This study is on the constant-current stress corrosion test, related to the load stress, in both the welded and non-welded zones of high tensile strength steel that is used for natural gas transmission. The surface corrosion pattern of the welded zone of API 5L-X65 specimens for natural gas transmission showed general corrosion and narrow pitting, and the pitting was increased with load stress. Initially, the average relative electrode potential and the average relative current of the high tensile strength steel, used for natural gas transmission specimens, were decreased rapidly, and the average relative electrode potential was higher and the average relative current was lower in welded zone, compared to base metal. The average relative electrode potential was decreased with load stress, and the average relative current was somewhat increased by increasing the load stress. The corrosion rate was less in welded zone, compared to base metal, and the corrosion rate was decreased by increasing the load stress.
The characteristics of smart skin for wireless LAN system under compression load are investigated. The smart skin structure is composed of 3 layers of face material and 2 layers of core material. Theoretical formula for determining buckling load is derived by Rayleigh-Ritz method and compared with experimental result. The maximum length of specimen that buckling does not occur is determined by only face material. In the experiment, if load supporting capability and the antenna property such as radiation pattern and reflection coefficient were examined.
A computer program was developed to analyze the non-linear, cyclic flexural performance of reinforced concrete structural members under various types of loading paths including non-sequential variations in axial load. This performance is significantly affected by the loading history. Different monotonic material models as well as hysteresis rules for confined and unconfined concrete and steel, some developed and calibrated against test results on material samples, were implemented in a fiber-based moment-curvature and in turn force-deflection analysis. One of the assumptions on curvature distribution along the member was based on a method developed to address the variation of the plastic hinge length as a result of loading pattern. Functionality of the program was verified by reproduction of analytical results obtained by others for several cases, and accuracy of the analytical process and the implemented models were evaluated against the experimental results from large-scale reinforced concrete columns tested under the analyzed loading cases. While the program can be used to predict the response of a member under a certain loading pattern, it can also be used to examine various analytical models and methods or refine a custom material model against test data.
This paper presents the effect of opening configuration on the thermal behavior and air pattern of earth tube system. The earth tube system is a fresh air load reduction system by using underground double floor space for air-conditioning. In order to analyze the effect of opening configuration on thermal performance of this system and air pattern in underground double floor space quantitatively, we used a model dealing with tree-dimensional profile of wind velocity and temperature in underground double floor space. In conclusion, it is confirmed that heat exchange of a fresh air is mainly performed with upper and lower wall in underground double floor space, and that heat exchange area increased by installing the opening near the wall.
The nanoprobe based on lithography, mainly represented by SPM based technologies, has been recognized as potential application to fabricate the surface nanostructures because of its operational versatility and simplicity. The objective of the work is to suggest new mastless pattern fabrication technique using the combination of machining by nanoindenter and KOH wet etching. The scratch option of the nanoindenter is a very promising method for obtaining nanometer scale features on a large size specimen because it has a very wide working area and load range. Sample line patterns were machined on a silicon surface, which has a native oxide on it, by constant load scratch (CLS) of the Nanoindenter with a Berkovich diamond tip, and they were etched in KOH solutions to investigate chemical characteristics of the machined silicon surface. After the etching process, the convex structure was made because of masking effect of the affected layer generated by nano-scratch. On the basis of this fact, some line patterns with convex structures were fabricated. Achieved patterns can be used as a mold that will be used for mass production processes such as nanoimprint or PDMS molding process. All morphological data of scratch traces were scanned using atomic force microscope (AFM).
Nonlinear Static Procedures (NSPs) have been developed as a practical tool to estimate the seismic demand of structures. Several researches have accomplished to minimize errors of NSPs, namely pushover procedures, in the Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NTHA), as the most exact method. The most important issue in a typical pushover procedure is the pattern and technique of loading which are extracted based on structural dynamic fundamentals. In this paper, the coefficients of modal force combination is focused involving a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm to find the optimum load pattern which results in a response with minimum amount of errors in comparison to the NTHA counterpart. Other parameters of the problem are based on the FEMA recommendations for pushover analysis of building structures. The proposed approach is implemented on a high-rise 20 storey concrete moment resisting frame under three earthquake records. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the studied procedure the results are presented beside other well-known pushover methods such as MPA and the FEMA procedures, and the results show the efficiency of the proposed load patterns.
The rotavator is attached to the three-point hitch at the rear of a tractor and uses the power take-off strength of the tractor to perform soil harrowing. During operation, the power transmitted to the gearbox of the rotavator varies with the soil characteristics and depth. These properties influence the reliability of the gearbox. In this study, actual load measurements and analyses were performed using a rotavator. In addition, the safety factor and fatigue life of the gearbox components were determined using the analysis results. Through analysis and tests, the contact pattern of the gear tooth surface was identified. The input power values of the gearbox were minimum and maximum at 54.5% and 84.5% of the tractor power, respectively. Based on the actual load analysis results, the strength and fatigue life of the gearbox components were satisfied. In addition, through the analysis and testing of the gear contact pattern, it was confirmed that a similar contact occurred. Through the analysis, the magnitude of the load acting on the tooth surface of the gear was confirmed.
In general, short term load forecasting is based on the periodical load pattern during a day or a week. Therefore, the conventional methods do not expose stable performance to every day during a year. Especially for anomalous weather conditions such as typhoons, the methods have a tendency to show the conspicuous accuracy deterioration. Furthermore, the tendency raises the reliability and stability problems of the conventional load forecast. In this study, a new load forecasting method is proposed in order to increase the accuracy of the forecast result in case of anomalous weather conditions such as typhoons. For irregular weather conditions, the sensitivity between temperature and daily load is used to improve the accuracy of the load forecast. The proposed method was tested with the actual load profiles during 14 years, which shows that the suggested scheme considerably improves the accuracy of the load forecast results.
Paper presents an improved solution algorithm based on Finite Element Method to analyse piled raft foundation. Piles are modelled as beam elements with soil springs. Finite element analysis of raft is based on the classical theory of thick plates resting on Winkler foundation that accounts for the transverse shear deformation of the plate. Four node, isoparametric rectangular elements with three degrees of freedom per node are considered in the development of finite element formulation. Independent bilinear shape functions are assumed for displacement and rotational degrees of freedom. Effect of raft thickness, soil modulus and load pattern on the response is considered. Significant improvement in the settlements and moments in the raft is observed.
The solution of two-dimensional deflection of circular wavy reinforcing fiber elastics was obtained for one end clamped boundary under concentrated load condition. The fiber was regarded as a linear elastic material. Wavy shape was described as a combination of half-circular arc smoothly connected each other with constant curvature of all the same magnitude and alternative sign. Also load direction was taken into account. As a result, the solution was expressed in terms of a series of elliptic integrals. These elliptic integrals had two different transformed parameters involved with load value and initial radius of curvature. While we found the exact solutions and expressed them in terms of elliptic integrals, the recursive ignition formulae about the displacement and arc length at each segment of circular section were obtained. Algorithm of determining unknown parameters was established and the profile curve of deflected beam was shown in comparison with initial shape.
