Among mechanical friction losses in an engine, the piston assembly and cylinder components accounts for the majority of the losses. The movable bore technique has been developed and turned out to be the most reliable technique in measuring the instantaneous friction of piston assembly. The weakness of this system, however, was the presence of the protruded top of movable bore necessary for pressure balancing. Because of the protruded part the piston could not be taken out without disassembling the crankshaft. Present study was carried out with a system of removable top of the movable bore so that it was possible to make frequent piston removals. The effects from engine speed, oil viscosity, engine load and elastic contact pressure of piston rings on the frictional characteristics have been evaluated with the improved equipment. Also, frictions of each member of piston assembly were measured.
The objective of this paper is to provide a comparison between two transverse flux rotary machines (TFRM) with different topologies of stator cores. Depending on how to make stator core with laminated steel sheets, the one topology is 'perpendicular stacking core' and the other is 'separated core'. Both of the two cores have been designed considering 3-dimensional (3-D) magnetic flux path with the same output power conditions, but the core losses are quite different and it causes different magnetic and thermal characteristics. For comparison of these two topologies of stator cores, therefore, core losses have been calculated and used as a heat source in no-load conditions, and the thermal stress has been also calculated. 3-D finite element method has been used for the magnetic field, thermal, and stress analysis to consider the 3-D flux path of the TFRM. After comparing the analysis results of the two topologies, experimental results are also presented and discussed.
Switch losses directly affect the efficiency of power conversion systems and those have big differences according to the power consumed by load systems and the structures of power conversion circuits. In this paper, analyses for switch losses in DC link converter are performed based on the circuit structures of the DC/DC converter in photovoltaic generation system whose output power is varied according to the amount of solar radiation, temperature and partial shade on the solar modules. Boost converter is adopted as a DC link converter topology of the photovoltaic generation system and the loss analyses for the switches used in the boost converters are performed according to the circuit structures. Analyses like the things performed in this paper will be a prerequisite to designing the photovoltaic generation system whose output power is changed according to the environmental variations.
The occurrence of ferroresonance in electrical systems including nonlinear inductors such as transformers will bring a lot of malicious damages. The intense ferromagnetic saturation of the iron core is the most influential factor in ferroresonance that makes nonsinusoidal current and voltage. So the nonlinear behavior modeling of the magnetic core is the most important challenge in the study of ferroresonance. In this paper, the ferroresonance phenomenon is investigated in a single phase transformer using the finite element method and considering the hysteresis loop. Jiles-Atherton (JA) inverse vector model is used for modeling the hysteresis loop, which provides the accurate nonlinear model of the transformer core. The steady-state analysis of ferroresonance is done while considering different capacitors in series with the no-load transformer. The accurate results from copper losses and iron losses are extracted as the most important specifications of transformers. The validity of the simulation results is confirmed by the corresponding experimental measurements.
This paper is proposed an efficiency optimization operation algorithm for synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) using current phase angle control technique. The SynRM has to controlled with the optimal current phase angles with load and operation speed variation, to obtain high efficiency over the wide speed ranges. An efficiency optimization condition in SynRM which minimizes the copper and iron losses is derived based on the equivalent circuit model of the machine. The objective of the efficiency optimization control algorithm compensating the optimum current angle, is to seek a combination of d and q-axis current components which provides minimum losses at a certain operating point in steady state. The usefulness of the proposed efficiency optimization control is verified through vector-controlled inverter system with the SynRM.
In this study, single-phase and three-level boost converters applied to the photovoltaic system were compared and analyzed in terms of efficiency and power density according to the input voltage and load conditions. For accurate analysis of efficiency, the losses in each device of the single-phase and three-level boost converters were derived using mathematical equations and simulations by using the PSIM thermal module. Then, the losses were compared with the efficiency confirmed through the actual experiments. Results confirmed that the efficiency and power density can be improved by applying the three-level boost converter to the system according to the selection of the switching frequency.
This paprer presents the evlauation method for transmission marginal loss factors(MLFs) considering the electrical distance. Generally, MLFs are represented as the sensitivity of transmission losses, which is computed from the change of generation by the change of the load. MLFs are classified as load-focused MLFs and generator-focused MLFs. The existing evaluation method for generator focused MLFs has the limit not reflecting the characteristic of power systems since the method has been introduced the assumption which the output of a generator is supplied to all of the load buses on the power system. Therefore, to overcome the limit of evaluation method for generator-focused MLFs, we have applied the process, which it approximately can find the load buses that supplied a generator to the method. We have applied the proposed method to the simple 5-bus system because the proposed method is not analytic but the hybrid method incorporated the Kirschen and Bialek's algorithm to the existing analytic method to find the load buses supplied by a generator.
In this study, a new dual-active soft-switching converter is proposed to improve conversion efficiency and extend the load range for an MTEM electromagnetic transmitter in geological exploration. Unlike a conventional DC/DC converter, the proposed converter can operate in passive soft-switching, single-active soft-switching, or dual-active soft-switching modes depending on the change in load power. The main switches and lagging auxiliary switches of the converter can attain soft-switching over the entire load range. The conduction and switching losses are greatly reduced compared with those of ordinary converters under the action of the cut-off diodes and auxiliary windings coupled to the main transformer in the auxiliary circuits. The conversion efficiency of the proposed converter is significantly improved, especially under light-load conditions. First, the working principle of the proposed converter is analyzed in detail. Second, the relationship between the different operating modes and the load power is given and the design principle of the auxiliary circuit is presented. Finally, the Saber simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility and validity of the converter and a 50 kW prototype is implemented.
