  • In this study, optimal design of reinforced concrete piers under seismic load is numerically investigated. Object function is the area of the concreate-section. Design variables are the total area of reinforcement and concrete-section dimension(Circular section diameter). Constraints of the design strength of the column, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and lower and upper bounds on the design variables are imposed. The reinforcement concrete column is analysed and designed by the Ultimated Strength Design method and load combination involving dead, live, wind and seismic load is used. For numerical optimization, ADS(Garret N, Vanderplaats_ routine is used. From the result of numerical examples, the concrete-section dimension was reduced, but longitudinal reinforcement was not changed. The results show that confinement reinforcement was reduced and confinement reinforcement spacing is increased. The higher strength of reinforcement used, the more concrete-section area was reduced.

  • This paper deals with a voltage and frequency (VF) controller for an isolated power generation system based on an asynchronous generator (AG) driven by a pico hydro turbine. The proposed controller is a combination of a static compensator (STATCOM) and an electronic load controller (ELC) for decoupled control of the reactive and active powers of the AG system to control the voltage and frequency respectively. The proposed generating system along with its VF controller is modeled in MATLAB using SIMULINK and PSB (Power System Block Sets) toolboxes. The performance of the controller is verified for the proposed system and feeding various types of consumer load such as linear/non-linear, balanced/unbalanced and dynamic loads.

  • This paper presents a generalized multi-parameter distribution method for the convolution of linear combination of random variables to calculate system load flow in a conventional probabilistic approach and also presents a conceptual possibilistic approach using fuzzy set theory to manage uncertainties. The probability distribution function is transformed into an appropriate possibilistic representation under the compromise between the transformation consistency and the human updating experience. The IEEE 25-bus system is used to demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this article, based on the higher-order shear deformation plate theory, buckling analysis of a rectangular plate made of functionally graded piezoelectric materials and its effective parameters are investigated. Assuming the transverse distribution of electric potential to be a combination of a parabolic and a linear function of thickness coordinate, the equilibrium equations for the buckling analysis of an FGP rectangular plate are established. In addition to the Maxwell equation, all boundary conditions including the conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate for closed and open circuited are satisfied. Considering double sine solution (Navier solution) for displacement field and electric potential, an analytical solution is obtained for full simply supported boundary conditions. The accurate buckling load of FGP plate is presented for both open and closed circuit conditions. It is found that the critical buckling load for open circuit is more than that of closed circuit in all loading conditions. Furthermore, it is observed that the influence of dielectric constants on the critical buckling load is more than those of others.

  • Recent experimental research results of connection method between steel pipe pile and concrete footing are provided based on various experimental observations. It gives a shedding light toward developing better and concrete connection method for steel pipe pile at the field application. In this study, the newly developed method is tested for compressive, pull put and combination load including moment with carefully designed monitoring system. The measured data show that new method have at least equivalent or better load resistant capacities compared with those of specified method in Korea Highway Corporation design code. It is also tried to define and investigate the load transfer mechanism for new method.

  • High voltage power supply with pulse load($4.5{\mu}s$ and PRF 60Hz) condition is investigated which is of interest for applications like Klystron modulator power supplies with output voltage of 50kV. The performance specifications with this type of power supplies are very stringent demanding tight regulation(<0.01%) and high efficiency(> 85%). The solution to this problem as a single stage converter is very difficult. The final output voltage is obtained as sum of the output of SCPS & PCPS. The combination of the two stages can satisfy the pulse load specifications. The analysis of the voltage and power division between SCPS & PCPS has been done for the proposed topology. It has studied under various operating conditions of line and load. Simulation results are validated by experimental results.

  • In this study the cylinder liner deformation which is one of the most influencing factors in a diesel engine oil consumption was performed by the finite element analysis on the basic designed structure consisting of the cylinder block, head and liners under the conditions of assembly, thermal and gas loads. Compared with a large number of other cylinder blocks showing remarkable harmonic orders of the liner distortion, results are excellent. Namely. the higher harmonic order amplitudes of the radial liner deformation amount to 1 ~ 2㎛ maximally. The main reason lies in the relatively large wall thickness of the liner which amounts to 8.2% of the bore diameter. Besides, a very stiff and symmetrical cylinder block design in combination with a bolt force introduction approximately 1.5mm below the block top deck have a further share on these results. Therefore excellent low oil consumption can be expected.

  • This paper describes fire performance of eight axially restrained reinforced concrete (RC) columns under a combination of two different load ratios and two different axial restraint ratios. The eight RC columns were all concentrically loaded and subjected to ISO834 standard fire on all sides. Axial restraints were imposed at the top of the columns to simulate the restraining effect of the rest of the whole frame. The axial restraint was effective when the column was expanding as well as contracting. As the results of the experiments have shown, the stiffness of the axial restraint and load level play an important role in the fire behaviors of both HSC and NSC columns. It is found that (a) the maximum deformations during expanding phase were influenced mostly by load ratio and hardly by axial restraint ratio, (b) For a given load ratio, axial restraint ratio had a great impact on the development of axial deformation during contraction phase beyond the initial equilibrium state, (c) increasing the axial restraint increased the value of restraint force generated in both the NSC and HSC columns, and (d) the development of column axial force during the contracting and cooling phase followed nearly parallel trend for columns under the same load ratio.

  • Wind-induced response behavior of long-span roof structures is very complicated, showing significant contributions of multiple vibration modes. The largest load effects in a huge number of members should be considered for the sake of the equivalent static wind loads (ESWLs). Studies on essential matters and necessary conditions of the universal ESWLs are discussed. An efficient method for universal ESWLs on long-span roof structures is proposed. The generalized resuming forces including both the external wind loads and inertial forces are defined. Then, the universal ESWLs are given by a combination of eigenmodes calculated by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis. Firstly, the least squares method is applied to a matrix of eigenmodes by using the influence function. Then, the universal ESWLs distribution is obtained which reproduces the largest load effects simultaneously. Secondly, by choosing the eigenmodes of generalized resuming forces as the basic loading distribution vectors, this method becomes efficient. Meanwhile, by using the constraint equations, the universal ESWLs becomes reasonable. Finally, reproduced largest load effects by load-response-correlation (LRC) ESWLs and universal ESWLs are compared with the actual largest load effects obtained by the time domain response analysis for a long-span roof structure. The results demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed universal ESWLs method.
