  • This study investigated residents' preferences for spatial features of sitting areas in assisted living facilities, and provides recommendations for planning sitting areas to support residents' spatial preferences and social interaction. The study participants were 69 residents of eight assisted living facilities (30+ resident capacity), located in south central Texas. A photographic comparison method was used, in which residents were shown 20 matched pairs of photos, with a single feature digitally modified in each pair, and asked to select which environmental representation they preferred. The hypothesized spatial characteristics were identified in practice based literature as those that may encourage usage of sitting areas: viewability, variety, homelikeness, and privacy. Most of the hypothesized features were preferred by participants, with the highest preference found for non-institutional furniture arrangements and naturalness, followed by increasing enclosure and variety of seating. Preference was less significant for domestic cues such as carpeted floors, divided light windows, and boundaries defined by different colored material or columns, possibly due to their physical impairments or preference for visual openness. Participants' level of mobility assistance was significantly related to their preference for some features, such as seating with people-watching capability, and carpeted floors. The findings have implications for facility architects and administrators engaged in resident-oriented spatial planning.

Those causes were resulted from discrepancies of political and social structures, but some of them can be improved depending on firemen's efforts. In addition, the means available for preventing the dead ground of fire fighting based on analyzed causes are suggested. Institutional approaches should be consulted with related agencies and legalized, but most managerial approaches can be introduced easily. Other means are approached for PR.

  • This research is about shared living facilities for the solitary elderly in Gyeonggi province (so called "Carnation House"), which was opened after 2013. These facilities aim to help solving the social problems of the growing number of the solitary elderly. The research was conducted from April 2014 to October 2014 by using observation, measurement, photography, and interview methods. This research reviewed floor plan, area, accessibility, visual openness, and furniture and equipments. The results are as follows: First, considering the need for rest area and the protection of privacy, livingroom should at least be equipped with a variable wall or have a separate room. Secondly, for the kitchen plan, considering the fact that large number of people move simultaneously, kitchen entrance should be widened or LDK type is preferable. Thirdly, the bathroom entrance should be widened to at least 800mm and should have barrier free design. Fourthly, porch entrance should be planned to secure enough space and shoe cabinets for multiple users. Fifthly, to allow the users to enjoy outside view, the windows of living spaces should be placed no higher than 800mm from the floor level. Finally, for the location of the facility, people prefer the location be at the center of the village or near home. In addition, location with easy accessibility for the elderly is advisable. Therefore, establishing local guidelines for shared living facilities for the solitary elderly is advisable. When establishing local guidelines, local characters, culture and usage patterns should be considered.

The study was conducted on 469 elderly people of the same age, gender and basic living conditions. Elderly residing in long-term care facilities had higher dental caries prevalence(p=0.019), DT(p=0.001), and MT(p=0.047) than non-resident elderly, and had lower FT(p<0.001) than non-resident elderly. The elderly living in facilities were 1.93 times more likely to be caries than non-residents, and 0.73 times more likely to have a filled tooth. The probability of denture use was 0.15 times for the maxillary and 0.13 times for the mandibular. The probability of denture needs was 5.61 times for the maxillary and 5.65 times for the mandibular. All of these results showed significant differences. As a result of this, it can be used as basic data for establishing oral health policy for oral health promotion of the elderly living in Long-term care facilities.
