  • The activities of phase II and antioxidant enzymes in the liver, lung, kidney, stomach, and colon of mice were examined following intragastric application of polysaccharides extracted from soybeans fermented with either Agrocybe Cylindracea (AC) or Phellinus ignarius (PI). The intragastric application of the extracts to mice for 14 days significantly increased the activities of quinone reductase (QP) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the liver and kidney, glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the liver, kidney, lung, and stomach, and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the liver, lung, and kidney. In general, the elevation of the phase II and antioxidant enzymes activities was more pronounced in the liver and kidney as compared to the lung, stomach, and colon. Accordingly, these finding suggest that polysaccharides extracted from soybeans fermented with A. cylindracea or P. igniarius have a cancer chemopreventive potential in various target organs.

  • This study aimed to find out the effect of freeze-drying leek against cadmium poisoning on the cholesterol and enzyme activities in serum and superoxide radical, SOD and catalase in liver and kidney of the male rats during the administrered period. In this experiment, male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain were used. The rats were divided into 3 groups which were fed differently either for 5 weeks or for 10 weeks:basal diet, basal diet and cadmium in water and 3 % leek added diet and cadmium in water. Cadmium was administered ad libiturn 100 ppm CdCl$_{2}$ in water. The followings are the results of this experiment. 1. Leek reduced the cholesterol and the activities of GPT increase resulted from cadmium treatment. 2. Leek reduced the rate of cadmium in liver and kidney. 3. Leek reduced the activities of SOR and catalase in liver and kidney, while it enhanced the activities of SOD. 4. Leek reduced the necrosis and swelling in liver and kidney casused by cadmium treatment. This experiment showed that leek-addition group had protective effect against cadmium poisoning and increased ALPase activities in serum. Leek alleviated GPT activities in serum and cadmium concentration, necrosis, and swelling in liver and kidney. Therefore, this experiment concluded that leek has defensive power against cadmium poisoning.

  • These studies were carried out to find out some characteristic responses of biological samples under the exposure of trace metals. In animal experiment, six rats per week were killed for 6 weeks under Cd exposures and the concentrations of Cd, Cu and Zn in their organs and blood were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were summarized as follows: In animal experiments, the concentrations of Cd in the liver and kidney of Cd exposure groups were increased, however, the values of hematocrit and hemoglobin in blood were decreased remarkably. The body weight of the Cd exposure groups showed lower trend than that of control group. The concentrations of Cd in heart, lung and testes were increased slowly during the first 2 weeks. The concentrations of Cd in their organs decreased while the rapid increase of the concentration of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed. While rapid increase of the concentra~ion of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed, the concentrations of Cd in the organs were decreased afterward and increased again while the low increase of the concentration of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed. The concentrations Cu and Zn were increased remarkably in all the organs for first 2 and 3 weeks. In the exposure groups of Cd+Cu and Cd+Zn, the liver and kidney didn't show lower concentration of Cd than that of Cd group.

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of naturally occurring small non-coding RNAs of about 22 nucleotides that have recently emerged as important regulators of gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. Recent studies provided clear evidence that microRNAs are abundant in the lung, liver and kidney and modulate a diverse spectrum of their functions. Moreover, a large number of studies have reported links between alterations of miRNA homeostasis and pathological conditions such as infectious diseases, sickle cell disease and endometrium diseases as well as lung, liver and kidney diseases. As a consequence of extensive participation of miRNAs in normal functions, alteration and/or abnormalities in miRNAs should have importance in human diseases. Beside their important roles in patterning and development, miRNAs also orchestrated responses to pathogen infections. Particularly, emerging evidence indicates that viruses use their own miRNAs to manipulate both cellular and viral gene expression. Furthermore, viral infection can exert a profound impact on the host cellular miRNA expression profile, and several RNA viruses have been reported to interact directly with cellular miRNAs and/or to use these miRNAs to augment their replication potential. Here I briefly summarize the newly discovered roles of miRNAs in various human diseases including infectious diseases, sickle cell disease and enodmetrium diseases as well as lung, liver and kidney diseases.

  • Objective : Nutrient Qi, Blood Qi and Essencial Qi are the most significant qi in spleen, liver and kidney. However, the origins and functions of those qi are not quite detailed somehow. Method : I will try to find out the origins and functions of Nutrient Qi, Blood Qi and Essencial Qi through "Hwangdineijing". Result : The Nutrient Qi is the essence of spleen, Blood Qi is the essence of liver and Essencial Qi is the essence of kidney. Conclusion : The Nutrient Qi has function of nourishment in human body and digestion of water and food in spleen itself. The Blood Qi has a function to make each organ work in human body and to make free coursing in liver itself. Essential Qi has a function to store each essential qi of five viscera in human body and reproduction in kidney itself.

  • Fibrosis is a pathological condition that is characterized by an abnormal buildup of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, such as collagen, in tissues. This condition affects various organs of the body, including the liver and kidney. Early diagnosis and treatment of fibrosis are crucial, as it is a progressive and irreversible process in both organs. While there are certain similarities in the fibrosis process between the liver and kidney, there are also significant differences that must be identified to determine molecular diagnostic markers and potential therapeutic targets. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), a class of RNA molecules that do not code for proteins, are increasingly recognized as playing significant roles in gene expression regulation. Emerging evidence suggests that specific lncRNAs are involved in fibrosis development and progression by modulating signaling pathways, such as the TGF-β/Smad pathway and the β-catenin pathway. Thus, identifying the precise lncRNAs involved in fibrosis could lead to novel therapeutic approaches for fibrotic diseases. In this review, we summarize lncRNAs related to fibrosis in the liver and kidney, and propose their potential as therapeutic targets based on their functions.

  • According to the principle of ascending water and descending fire, water has the property of wetting downward, which is the opposite of fire, which has the property of blazing upward. Thus, they work differently according to their innate properties. Nature and the human body maintain harmony through the interaction of ascending water and descending fire. When applied to the human body, the heart and kidney are the center of this principle. In other words, the heart above is the fire and the kidney downward is water. When the heart-fire harmonizes downward, the kidney becomes warm, enabling genuine vital functions to be active. When the kidney yin moves upward, the heart receives the nourishing yin to harmonize nutrients and blood. Thereby, physiological functions become normal throughout the blood meridians. However, in the ascending kidneywater and descending heart-yang of the heart and the kidney, the liver and lung are the major functional organs. In other words, the liver through the dispersing and raising yang functions moves water, which is the vital essence of the kidney, upward. And the lung, through the astriction?clearing of the lung and descending Qi?dispersing functions, moves the heart-fire downward. These functions are deeply related with changing seasons; thus, these functions can be explained with the ascending kidney-water and descending heart-yang of the five viscera.

  • Long terminal repeat (LTR) of human endogenous retrovirus K family (HERV-K) has been found to be coexpressed with sequences of closely located genes. We examined the transcribed HERV-K LTR elements in human liver and kidney tissues. Using the cDNA synthesized from mRNA of human liver and kidney, we performed PCR amplification and identified six HERV-K LTR elements. Those LTR elements showed a high degree of sequence similarity (93.3∼96.6%) with human-specific LTR. A phylogenetic tree obtained by the neighbor-joining method revealed that HERV-K LTR elements (Liv-1, 2, 3 and Kid-1, 2, 3) were belonged to group I. Our data suggests that HERV-K LTR elements are active on human liver and kidney tissues and may represent a source of genetic variation connected to human disease.

  • Heavy metals like Mercury and Cadmium cause various kinds of toxicities in the organs of Liver and Kidney. To observe the results of toxicity in the liver, kidney, and serum when the rats were injected subcutaneously with HgCl$_2$ and CdC1$_2$ and sacrificed after 24 hours and 72 hours from the last injection, we measured variation of lipidperoxide values in rat liver homogenate, variation of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in rat serum. Variation of lipidperoxide values in rat kidney homogenate and variation of BUN in rat serum. It was found that Mercury and Cadmium administered subcutaneously to the skin in the air could cause the damages of liver and kidney.
