Objective: Microminipig (MMP) is a miniature pig with an extra small body size for experimental use. In the present study, the occurrence of stillbirths and their genetic association with swine leukocyte antigen (SLA) class II haplotypes were evaluated in a population of MMPs. Methods: The occurrences of stillbirth and genetic association with SLA class II haplotypes using 483 stillborn and 2,246 live piglets, and their parents were compared among the three groups of newborn piglet litters; an all stillborn (AS) group consisting of only stillborn piglet litters, a partial stillborn (PS) group consisting of stillborn and live piglet litters, and an all alive (AA) group consisting of only live piglet litters. Results: The incidence of stillborn piglets was 483/2,729 (17.7%). Distributions of litter sizes, numbers of stillborn piglets in a litter, parities, and gestation periods were distinct among the three groups. The frequencies of low resolution haplotype (Lr)-0.7 or Lr-0.23 were higher in the AS group than in the PS or AA groups. In sires, the frequency of Lr-0.7 associated with the AS group was significantly higher in the AS group than with the AA group. In dams, the frequency of Lr-0.23 was significantly higher in the AS group than in the PS or AA groups, whereas the frequency of Lr-0.7 was not significantly different. Conclusion: The incidence of stillborn piglets in MMPs appears to be higher than those in other pig breeds. Several traits related with stillbirths such as the number of stillborn piglets and parities of the AS group were different from those of the PS and AA groups. Specific SLA class II haplotypes were associated significantly with a high incidence of stillbirths and could be used as genetic markers to adopt breeding strategies to lower the rate of stillbirth in MMPs.
The composition rates of litters were studied at Camellia japonica forests in Koje-Do and Haenam, and at Quercus acuta, Quercus acutissima, Cryptomeria japonica, and Chamaecyparis abtusa forests in Haenam. Total amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and sodium in litter samples were measured and the relation between these amounts and decomposition rate was studied. Annual litter production were rarely different at each forest in Haenam. The amount of accumulated organic matter was about 4 times greater at C. japonica forest in Koje-Do than at the C. japonica forest in Haenam. These amounts were 5, 282.1 $\pm$ 1, 026.03g/m2 in Koje-Do and 1, 420.7 $\pm$ 384.77g/$m^2$ in haenam. The decomposition rate were rarely differnet at each forest in Haenam, but the rates showed great difference at C. japonica foreests in Koje-Do and Haenam. The rates were 0.093 and 0.313 at C. japonica forests in Koje-Do and in Haenam respectively. The sodium contents were 0.472% and 0.229% on L layer and on Css layer of C. japonica forest in Koje-Do, while they were 0.034% and 0.043% on L layer, and on Css layer of C. jpaonica forest in Haenam. It is sugested that much difference in the salt contents in the forest floor was present from the results of sodium content measured at each site, and that the decomposition rate was affected by the much concentration of salt in Koje-Do.
To estimate removal rate of phosphorus in aquatic grassland ecosystems of Paldangho, this investigation was conducted along with the coast of a lake. The experimental results may be summarized on communities of Typha angustata, Miscanthus sacchriflorus Phragmites communis and Scirpus tabernaemontani as follows. The annual production of phosphorus for the litters in T. angustata, M saccharsflorus, P. cam-munis and S. taiernaemontani grasslands were 10.252 g /$m^2$, 3.833 g /$m^2$, , 2.656 g /$m^2$, and 5.210 g /$m^2$, respectively. The ratio of annual production of P accumulated on surface soils in a steady state provides estimates of the removal rate r, The estimated removal rates r of P were 0.58, 0.78, 0.68 and 0.59 in T. angustata, M. sacchariflorus, P. communis and S. tabernaemontani grasslands re- spectively. The removal and accumulation of 50, 95 and of 99% of its steady state level, the estimates for P of T. angustata were 1.195, 5.173 and 8.623 years, in M. sacchariflorus were 0.880, 3.842, and 6.403 years, and in P. cammunis were 1.014, 4.390, and 7.316 years respectively, In S. tabernaemontani grassland required period were 1.178,5.099 and 8.500. Key words:T. angustata, S. tabernaemantani, P. communis, S. tabernaemontani, Paldangho, Removal rate, Phosphorus.
The production and decomposition rates of litters were studied in three mountains, Mt. Halla, Mt. So-back and Mt. Tae-back. The amounts of N, P, K, Ca and Na in the soils were measured and the relationships between the mineral nutrients and decay rates were reserched, The annual litter production was the most as $1, 077.3g/m^2$ and the least as $248.0g/m^2$ in a stand of Quercus acutissima at 820m of the Mt. So-back and at 1, 350m of the Mt. So-back among the study sites, respectively. The decay rates of litter was the highest as k=0.448 and the lowest as k=0.082 in a stand of Q. acutissima at 820m of the Mt. So-back and at 1, 450m of the Mt. Tae-back at 1, 450m of the Mt. Tae-back among the study sites. The higher altitude was, the slower the decay rates were. The annual contents of mineral nutrient and their amounts inputted into the forest soil were proportional to the decay rate of organic metters.

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia, MC) has been used in traditional Korean medicine in treating diabetes. In addition, some reports were emerged, showing the antifertility activities of MC in mammals. We investigated the effects of ethanolic MC extract on the reproductive activity of golden hamsters whose spermatogenetic capacity is controlled by their photoperiods. The animals were divided into 4 groups: long photoperiod (LP) control, short photoperiod (SP) control, and LP animals treated with MC. The animals were orally ingested with low (0.03 g/kg) or high (0.15 g/kg) concentrations of the ethanolic extracts for 8 weeks on the daily basis. The control animals received the vehicle. The animals were then mated with age-matched females, experienced pregnancy. As results, the LP control animals showed active large testes but SP control animals displayed remarkably reduced testes. The animals treated with both concentrations of MC extracts demonstrated large testes, indicating fertile activity as animals in LP. LP control animals had litters as expected, but SP controls had no litters at all. MC extract showed the same results as LP animals in generating offsprings. These results suggest that the MC extract does not change the photoperiodic influence on reproductive activity of male golden hamsters.
The objectives of this study were to measure growth rate and endocrine changes and to improve milk production by somatostatin passive immunization in rat. Experimental animals were 10 weeks old 20 Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were randomly assigned each 10 in control (normal sheep serum injected: NSS) and treatment (anti-somatostatin injected), and pre-fed for 2 weeks. Anti-somatostatin was purified from serum of 1 year old sheep after somatostatin active immunization, and was injected daily to rats, and growth rate and milk yield were measured for 14 days. Growth rate of litters was 2.15 g/d and 2.32 g/d in NSS and anti-somatostatin injected, respectively. Milk production was increased 6.2% in day 8 and 6.5% in day 12 by anti-somatostatin injection. Plasma growth hormone, insulin, glucose, and urea-N were increased, but non-esterified fatty acid was decreased by anti-somatostatin injection. In summary, passive immunization of somatostatin improved growth rate of litters and milk production in rats.
This study was carried out to find the difference between the naturaly born sex rtio among 1,242 head of pigs(120 litters) at Swine Farm, Cheil Sugar Co. and B-body a, pp.arance from their semen, and to find the conception rates which were inseminated to 40 sows with sperm from the anode and cathode after electrophoresis of boar semen. In order to the electrophoretic separation, the semen was placed into the platimum loop electrodes(105 cc) at room temperature for 30 minutes with D.C. 3V. and 350${\mu}$A. constant. The sperm fluorescent staining method was performed in accordance with Bhattacharya's(1970) method. The spermatozoa were observed through a Olympus Vanox microscope(made in Japan) using exciter filter with I heat barrier HPO 120. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The natural sex ratio of 1,242 piglets(120 litters) which were born at Swine Farm, Cheil Sugar Co. was 50%, and B-body a, pp.arance of its boar semen were 49.24%. 2. With electrophoretic separation, the anode and cathode attracted 65.5${\pm}$5.03% and 29.89${\pm}$4.29% of B-body bearing sperm, respectively. 3. After electrophoresis of boar sperm, they were inseminated to 40 sows with sperm from anode and cathode. The conception rate was 92.5%.
Two cases of congenital hyperostosis at a pig farm were observed and examined pathologically in Landrace piglets. Twenty two piglets from 2 litters: 10 alive piglets in a litter and 2 stillborn and 10 alive piglets in another, were born with thickened forelimbs and some of them with thickened hindlimbs too. These piglets stowed symptoms of staggering and incoordination. Only one of these piglets could be reared normally and all the others died within 3 days of age. The thickened parts of their limbs were felt firm and not well pitted by finger pressing. An apparent ossification was identified on the central regions of the cross sections of the thickened limbs, and some pale, gray and ossiferous signs were found in the peripheral soft areas. On histopathological examination of the thickened limbs, it was found that the bone trabeculae were newly proliferated in a concentric form in central regions and in a radiated form in peripheral regions. The peripheral regions of the periosteum and perichondrium of new bone were proliferated with connective tissue and the edematous muscle bundles were atrophic and degenerative. Both the sows which produced piglets of congenital hyperostosis were mated with a different boar at next breeding and farrowed normal piglets. It was concluded that the swine congenital hyperostosis in the present cases was expressed by autosomal recessive gene of first mating boar.
1) The aim of present investigation is to elucidate the relation of the balance of the production and decomposition of the fir litter. in Kwangnung plantation stands. 2) The decay constant, K, of litters was 0. 185 for the fir stand at Kwangnung. 3) The mode for the accumulation of organic carbon ($C_a$) is $c_a$= $610(1-e^{-0.185t})$), and for the decay of organic carbon (C) C = $610(1-e^{-0.185t})$. 4) The time required for the decay of half of the accumulated organic carbon in the fir stand is 3. 74 years and for 99% of elimination 27.02 years. 5) The litters of Abies holophylla killed by heat and washed with alcohol-benzol, with hot water, or with both alcohol-benzol and hot water were incubated after inoculated with suspension of firwood soil. Plate counts were made of fungi and bacteria from time to time. 6) Removal of the alcohol-benzol soluble substance stimulates at the beginning of the decay the growth of fungi and also of bacteria. 7) Removal of the water soluble fraction is detrimental to the growth of fungi in particular. 8) The distribution of soil microbial population is higher in both F and H horizon of the fir plantation soil in Kwangnung. However, the number of soil microorganisms decreases with the depth in forest soil.
