  • New methods of the reduction of carboxylic acid salts to aldehydes with 2 equiv of thexylbromoborane-dimethyl sulfide (ThxBHBr${\cdot}SMe_2$) or 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) are described. Both these reagents provide the corresponding aldehydes from various as sodium and lithium salts of carboxylic acids in high yields both at room temperature. Such facile reductions are explained as the simple substitution for the bromo group of ThxBHBr by a carboxylate to form thexyl(acyloxty)borane followed by reduction with excess reagent and the formation of an ate complex followed by reduction with excess 9-BBN.

  • Due to the rapid development of electricity, electronics, information communication, and biotechnology in recent years, studies are actively being conducted on nanopowders as it is required not only for high strengthening but also for high-function powder with electric, magnetic, and optical properties. Nonetheless, studies on nickel nanopowders are rare. In this study of the synthesis of nickel nanoparticles from $LiNiO_2$ (LNO), which is a cathode active material, we have synthesized the nanosized nickel powder by the liquid reduction process of $NiSO_4$ obtained through the leaching and purification of LNO. Moreover, we have studied the reduction reaction rate according to the temperature change of liquid phase reduction and the change of particle size as a function of NaOH addition amount using hydrazine monohydrate ($N_2H_4{\cdot}H_2O$) and NaOH.

  • Environment has become a main issue nowadays. People began to show big interest in "futuristic means of transportation", which is an efficient method in $CO_2$ emissions reduction and decreasing use of oil. Due to the noise and emissions of two-wheel vehicle of internal combustion engine, electric two-wheeled vehicles have been supplied in downtown. The electric two-wheeled vehicles use battery as power source. The performance of lithium-ion battery changes as the ambient temperature changes. In this paper, analysis of performance variance of electric two-wheeled vehicles influenced by the temperature using the chassis dynamometer and the environmental chamber was carried out.

  • We describe the synthesis and characterization of silicon nanoparticles prepared by the solution reduction of silicon tetrachloride by lithium naphthalenide and subsequently with n-butyllithium at room temperature. These reactions produce silicon nanoparticles with surfaces that are covalently terminated with butyl group. Reaction with lithium aluminium hydride instead of n-butyllithium produces hydride-terminated silicon nanoparticles. The butyl or hydride terminated silicon nanoparticles can be suspended in hexane and their optical behavior have been characterized by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Stabilization of silicon nanoparticles were investigated upon illumination, indicating that as-prepared silicon nanoparticles are very stable at room temperature for several days.

  • The electrochemical properties of hard carbon anodes in lithium ion batteries were improved by carbon coating using polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The reduction in irreversible capacity occured and the reversible capacity increased. It is suggested that the PVC carbon coating modifies the surface of hard carbon and reduces the surface reaction with species from air. The degree of the graphitization of PVC carbon was controlled by an addition of Ni, and the effect of the amount of Ni addition on the electrochemical properties was discussed.

  • The mass balance of the unit processes of the Advanced spent fuel Conditioning Process was calculated to obtain basic information. Based on this mass balance, the changes in decay heat and radioactivity of the spent fuel due to the metallization in the high temperature molten salt system were estimated. The decay heat and the radioactivity were calculated by using the ORIGEN2 computer code, and the result showed that the decay heat and the radioactivity of the metallized spent fuel ingot were $24.27\%\;and\;24.24\%$, respectively, compared to those of oxide spent fuel.

  • An experimental study has been performed on heat and mass transfer in a falling film absorber with a strong lithium bromide solution in small-sized household absorption chiller/heater. Components were concentrically arranged in a cylindrical form. from the center, low temperature generator, absorber and evaporator. This arrangement of helical-typed heat exchangers allows to make the machine much more compact than conventional one. Experimental measurements were conducted with a helical absorber and the obtained data were compared with data in the literatures. The comparison revealed that the helical absorber tube provides a similar performance to existing tube bundle absorber in heat and mass transfer. As a result, the heat and mass transfer characteristics of helical type absorber showed the possibility of the reduction in size and weight of small] capacity absorption chiller/heater.

  • Here, we report on nanocrystalline Si-Al-M (M = Fe, Cu, Ni, Zr) alloys for use as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, which were fabricated via a melt-spinning method. Based on the XRD and TEM analyses, it was found that the Si-Al-M alloys consist of nanocrystalline Si grains surrounded by an amorphous matrix phase. Among the Si-Al-M alloys with different metal composition, Ni-incorporated Si-Al-M alloy electrode retained the high discharge capacity of 2492 mAh/g and exhibited improved cyclability. The superior $Li^+$ storage performance of Si-Al-M alloy with Ni component is mainly responsible for the incorporated Ni, which induces the formation of ductile and conductive inactive matrix with crystalline Al phase, in addition to the grain size reduction of active Si phase.

  • The irreversible capacities caused by the reduction of solvent on the surface of a negative electrode (KMFC:Kawasaki Mesophase Fine Carbon) were examined during the initial cycle in ethylene carbonate (EC)-diethyl carbonate (DEC) electrolyte solut ions at various concentrations of LiPF6. Chronopotentiograms, linear sweep voltammograms, and impedance spectra clearly showed differences in irreversible capacity and that those differences are related to the concentration of electrolyte during the initial charge. These differences were caused by the amount of solvent decomposition as a function of the concentration of LiPF6 electrolytic salt. The data are discussed with reference to the concentration of electrolytic salt and the properties of passivation film formed by solvent decomposition.

  • The assessment of radiation fields in the lithium loop pipes and dump tank during the operation were performed for International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility - DEMO-Oriented NEutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) in order to obtain the radiation dose-rate maps in the component surroundings. Variance reduction techniques such as weight window mesh (produced with the ADVANTG code) were applied to bring the statistical uncertainty down to a reasonable level. The biological dose was given in the study, and potential shielding optimization is suggested and more thoroughly evaluated. The MCNP Monte Carlo was used to simulate a gamma particle transport for radiation shielding purposes for the current Li Systems' design. In addition, the shielding efficiency was identified for the Impurity Control System components and the dump tank. The analysis reported in this paper takes into account the radiation decay source from and activated corrosion products (ACPs), which is created by d-Li interaction. As a consequence, the radiation (resulting from ACPs and Be-7) shielding calculations have been carried out for safety considerations.
