A study on the corrosion behavior of Inconel alloys and Incoloy 800H in molten salt of LiCl-$Li_2O$ was investigated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 24-312 hours in an oxidation atmosphere. The order of the corrosion rate was Inconel 600 < Inconel 601 < Incoloy 800H < Inconel 690. Inconel 600 showed the best performance suggesting that the content of Fe, Cr and Ni are the important factor for corrosion resistance in hot molten salt oxidation conditions. The corrosion products of Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 were $Cr_2O_3$ and $NiFe_2O_4$, In case of Inconel 690, a single layer of $Cr_2O_3$ was formed in the early stage of corrosion and an outer layer of $NiFe_2O_4$ and inner layer of $Cr_2O_3$ were formed with an increase of corrosion time. In the case of Incoloy 800H, $Cr_2O_3$ and $FeCr_2O_4$ were observed. Most of the outer scale of the alloys was observed to be spalled from the results of the SEM analysis and the unspalled scale which adhered to the substrate was composed of three layers. The outer layer, the middle one, and the inner one were Fe, Cr, and Ni-rich, respectively. Inconel 600 showed localized corrosion behavior and Inconel 601, 690 and Incoloy 800H showed uniform corrosion behavior. Ni improves the corrosion resistance and too much Cr and/or Fe content deteriorates the corrosion resistance.

Liquid Bi pool is a candidate electrode for an electrometallurgical process in the molten LiCl-KCl eutectic to treat the spent nuclear fuels from nuclear power plants. The electrochemical behavior of Bi3+ ions and the electrode reaction on liquid Bi pool were investigated with the cyclic voltammetry in an environment with or without BiCl3 in the molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. Experimental results showed that two redox reactions of Bi3+ on inert W electrode and the shift of cathodic peak potentials of Li+ and Bi3+ on liquid Bi pool electrode in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. It is confirmed that the redox reaction of lithium with respect to the liquid Bi pool electrode would occur in a wide range of potentials in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. The obtained data will be used to design the electrometallurgical process for treating actinide and lanthanide from the spent nuclear fuels and to understand the electrochemical reactions of actinide and lanthanide at liquid Bi pool electrode in the molten LiCl-KCl eutectic.

The performance of Li-B alloy as anode for molten salt electrolysis was firstly investigated. The crystalline phase of the prepared Li-B alloy was identified as $Li_7B_6$. The potential profile of Li-B alloy anode was monitored during the electrodeposition of $Nd^{3+}$ onto an LCC (liquid cadmium cathode) in molten LiCl-KCl salt at $500^{\circ}C$. The potential of Li-B alloy was increased from -2.0 V to -1.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl by increasing the applied current from 10 to $50mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$. It was found that not only the anodic dissolution of Li to $Li^+$ but also the dissolution of the atomic lithium ($Li^0$) into the LiCl-KCl eutectic salt was observed, following the concomitant reduction of $Nd^{3+}$ by the $Li^0$ in Li-B alloy. It was expected that the direct reduction could be restrained by maintaining the anode potential higher that the deposition potential of neodymium.

This study proposed a new electrolytic reduction technology that is based on the integration of simultaneous uranium oxide metallization and Li$_2$O electrowinning. In this electrolytic reduction reaction, electrolytically reduced Li deposits on cathode and simultaneously reacts with uranium oxides to produce uranium metal showing more than 99% conversion. For the verification of process feasibility, the experiments to obtain basic data on the metallization of uranium oxide, investigation of reaction mechanism, the characteristics of closed recycle of Li$_2$O and mass transfer were carried out. This evolutionary electrolytic reduction technology would give benefits over the conventional Li-reduction process improving economic viability such as: avoidance of handling of chemically active Li-LiCl molten salt increase of metallization yield, and simplification of process.

Deionized water, methanol, and ethanol were investigated for their effectiveness at dissolving LiCl-KCl-UCl3 at 25, 35, and 50℃ using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to study the concentration evolution of uranium and mass ratio evolutions of lithium and potassium in these solvents. A visualization experiment of the dissolution of the ternary salt in solvents was performed at 25℃ for 2 min to gain further understanding of the reactions. Aforementioned solvents were evaluated for their performance on removing the adhered ternary salt from uranium dendrites that were electrochemically separated in a molten LiCl-KCl-UCl3 electrolyte (500℃) using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Findings indicate that deionized water is best suited for dissolving the ternary salt and removing adhered salt from electrodeposits. The maximum uranium concentrations detected in deionized water, methanol, and ethanol for the different temperature conditions were 8.33, 5.67, 2.79 μg·L-1 for 25℃, 10.62, 5.73, 2.50 μg·L-1 for 35℃, and 11.55, 6.75, and 4.73 μg·L-1 for 50℃. ICP-MS analysis indicates that ethanol did not take up any KCl during dissolutions investigated. SEM-EDS analysis of ethanol washed uranium dendrites confirmed that KCl was still adhered to the surface. Saturation criteria is also proposed and utilized to approximate the state of saturation of the solvents used in the dissolution trials.

The mass balance of the unit processes of the Advanced spent fuel Conditioning Process was calculated to obtain basic information. Based on this mass balance, the changes in decay heat and radioactivity of the spent fuel due to the metallization in the high temperature molten salt system were estimated. The decay heat and the radioactivity were calculated by using the ORIGEN2 computer code, and the result showed that the decay heat and the radioactivity of the metallized spent fuel ingot were $24.27\%\;and\;24.24\%$, respectively, compared to those of oxide spent fuel.

We had clarified the reactions of the rare earth oxides($RE_2O_3$) with lithium oxide produced in lithium reduction process of oxide fuels. Oxides of scandium, yttrium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, ytterbium and lutetium reacted with lithium oxide in the higher concentration than the respective certain critical concentration of lithium oxide and formed complex oxides($LiREO_2$). The critical lithium oxide concentrations for the formation of complex oxides of scandium, yttrium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, ytterbium and lutetium oxide were respectively 0.1 wt%, 1.9 wt%, 5.3 wt%, 5.0 wt%, 3.0 wt%, 3.9 wt% 2.9 wt%, 2.6 wt% and 0.3 wt%. Cerium and lanthanum oxide did not react with lithium oxide. These complex oxides obtained from experiments have limited solubility in lithium chloride at $650^{\circ}C$.

The electrolytic reduction of a spent oxide fuel involves a liberation of the oxygen in a molten LiCl electrolyte, which results in a chemically aggressive environment that is too corrosive for typical structural materials. Accordingly, it is essential to choose the optimum material for the processing equipment that handles the high molten salt. In this study, hot corrosion studies were performed on bare as well as coated superalloy specimens after exposure to lithium molten salt at $675^{\circ}C$ for 216 h under an oxidizing atmosphere. The IN713LC superalloy specimens were sprayed with an aluminized NiCrAlY bond coat and then with an $Y_2O_3$ top coat. The bare superalloy reveals an obvious weight loss due to spalling of the scale by the rapid scale growth and thermal stress. The chemical and thermal stability of the top coat has been found to be beneficial for increasing to the corrosion resistance of the structural materials for handling high temperature lithium molten salts.

In this study, a chlorination technique for recycling Li2ZrO3, a reaction product of ZrO2-assisted rinsing process, was investigated to minimize the generation of secondary radioactive pyroprocessing waste. It was found that the reaction temperature was a key parameter that determined the reaction rate and maximum conversion ratio. In the temperature range of 400-600℃, an increase in the reaction temperature resulted in a profound increase in the reaction rate. Hence, according to the experimental results, a reaction temperature of at least 450℃ was proposed to ensure a Li2ZrO3 conversion ratio that exceeded 80% within 8 h of the reaction time. The activation energy was found to be 102 ± 2 kJ·mol-1·K-1 between 450 and 500℃. The formation of LiCl and ZrO2 as reaction products was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results obtained at various total flow rates revealed that the overall reaction rate depends on the Cl2 mass transfer rate in the experimental condition. The results of this study prove that the chlorination technique provides a solution to minimize the amount of radioactive waste generated during the ZrO2-assisted rinsing process.
