  • This study measured whether subject descriptor searching and citation searching retrieve different documents for conceptual queries and methodological queries in natural science, engineering and social science. The retrieval effectiveness of two search methods was measured using as criteria, total number of documents retrieved, total number of relevant documents, overlapping and unique documents and precision ratio. The search subject was water resources and the databases used were Selected Water Resources Abstracts (SWRA) and SCISEARCH. Data were collected for 21 doctoral students working on their dissertations in the three fields of water resources. Principal findings included: 1) subject searching and citation searching each retrieved substantially equal number of documents; 2) total number of relevant documents for conceptual queries was larger than that for methodological queries, while there was a large variation among the three fields; 3) the average overlap was quite small, while citation searching yielded more unique documents than subject searching; 4) for conceptual queries, citation searching yielded a higher precision ratio than subject searching, while subject searching obtained a slightly higher precision ratio than citation searching for methodological queries ; and 5) citation searching was effective for both specific queries and broad queries if seed articles are well chosen, while subject searching only worked well for broad queries. It was further found that: 1) citation searching is not a subsidiary but a substantial retrieval method in water resources; 2) SWRA is effective for queries for engineering and SCISEARCH is appropriate for queries for natural science, while neither SWRA nor SCISEARCH work well for queries for social science; and 3) characteristics of queries affect retrieval results more than the characteristics of documents or the coverage of databases.

  • This study attempts to verify the hypothesis that the interdisciplinary communication patterns may be different according to each disciplines. To put it concretely, it is intended to analyze and compare the subject distribution, the format, the age, the origin and the language of the documents of other disciplines cited in the journal articles according to each disciplines. To test the hypothesis philosophy, sociology and physics as the sample for the three disciplines, that is, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences are sellected, and the documents cited in the journal articles published in 1966, 1971. 1976, 1981 and 1986 by the Korean Philosophical Association, the Korean Sociological Association and the Korean Physical Society are collected. And then the subject distribution, the format, the age, the origin, the language, and their use rate of the documents of other disciplines cited in the journal articles are investigated, analyzed and compared according to each disciplines. Some findings and conclusions made in the study are as follows. 1. The subject distribution of documents of other disciplines cited and its distribution ratio are different according to each disciplines, that is, humanities high, natural sciences low and social sciences medium. 2. The format and the use rate of documents of other disciplines cited are different according to each disciplines. In the three disciplines book and journal are more used than any format of documents in interdisciplinary communication while in case of the humanities and social sciences book is more used than journal, and in case of the natural sciences journal is more used than book in that communication. 3. The age and the use rate of the cited documents of other disciplines are different according to each disciplines. In case of the social sciences and natural sciences the documents of its last 20 years of publication are cited concentrately, and in case of the humanities the literature age is unconcerned. 4. The origin and the language of the cited documents of other disciplines, and its use rate are different according to each disciplines. In the humanities and natural sciences the documents published in foreign country are cited concentrately, and in the social sciences the home publication documents are more cited than the foreign. The documents of other disciplines in English language are most cited among the documents in any foreign languages in interdisciplinary communication. • This paper explores the upper and lower contexts of the literature, and examines the meaning that the context intends to say and the era indicated by '古'. This not only helps to objectively and concretely recognize and interpret the "old" era, it can also be used to dig deeper into the meaning of the literature. In particular, such research is expected to play an even greater role in the literature that needs to clarify historical facts. '古' can be specified differently depending on the literature. In this paper, in particular, focusing on this point, in order to examine more closely how the periodic interpretation of '古' was done, the interpretation and usage examples of '古' were intensively examined. Notable items in the meaning of '古' are the meanings of beginning, ancestor, always, forever, and so on. In particular, in historical literature, the first beginning of civilization was viewed as 'old'. It is emphasized that the age of pay wages is viewed as the "old" at the base point.

  • Many publications of ecocritical research papers and translations of ecocriticism occur in Vietnam in recent years. This paper examines ecocritical scholarly writing in Vietnam, understanding how it corresponds to-reflects and attends to-contemporary Vietnamese society and politics. Specifically, this paper contextualizes Vietnamese ecocriticism in contemporary social and political concerns-embodied in journalistic and administrative documents-about the modernity-oriented postcolonial nation-building of Vietnam. In revealing critiques of political and social degenerations implied in ecocritical writings in Vietnam, this paper suggests that the emergence of ecocriticism in present-day Vietnam indicates a recent "political turn." More importantly, such emergence reflects and engages with the continuing Marxist perspective of literature as an instrument for social criticism and cultural revolution in Vietnam. Vietnamese ecocritics bear the mission of prophets of the time, public educators, and soul engineers, writing is an act of engaging with and influencing reality. Writing (literary and scholarly) still forms an idealized ideological instrument in the struggles for national homogeneity and sovereignty and social democracy in present-day Vietnam.

  • The literature may be divided into two broad categories : primary and secondary literature. Primary literature comprises documents which contain the full text of the author's work. On the other hand secondary literature, such as indexes, abstracts, bibliographies reviews and surveys, provides signposts to the primary literature. This paper intended to examine and analyze the relationship between primary and secondary literature through the previous research and the theory, and the actual study which compared it with the lists of journals in three secondary literatures: Library and Information Science Abstracts(LISA). 1998; Library Literature (LL), 1998; Information Science Abstracts (ISA), 1998. Some of the problem involved in the study of journal overlap and coverage patterns of secondary services are discussed. Conclusions are drawn about the impact on library and information science selection policies and organization of library collections.

Currently, moxa treatment has become diversified in many ways. One of the moxa treatment techniques that was frequently used during the Joseon Dynasty was Woogakgubeop (牛角灸法, horn-shaped moxa treatment). This articles aims to disclose the fact that the Woogakgubeop is the technique applicable to the origin of the Large moxa treatments of today. Also, the writings of Woogakgubeop recorded in the royal medical documentations, such as the Chronicles of the Royal Families of the Joseon Dynasty, the Seungjeonwonilgi (The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat) and others, are analyzed and the characteristics of the Woogakgubeop are cleared through it. Methods: From the royal medical documents, the Chronicles of the Royal Families of the Joseon Dynasty and the Seungjeonwonilgi, articles related Woogakgubeop were extracted and analyzed. Records of each document were facilitated for the DB search. In addition to these two documents, the records of written literature were surveyed as well. The written literature are appropriate to express the experiences of intellectuals at the time. Results and Conclusions: 1. Considering that Woogakgubeop is a single therapy, there exists relatively many records in addition to the specialized medical documents, and through them, it is known that Woogakgubeop was a widely known therapy in the middle to later parts of Joseon in general. 2. Woogakgubeop is a method that addresses problems contained within the existing moxa treatment techniques. By enlarging the size of the mugwort wick, it strengthens the heat energy of the moxa treatment to reduce the frequency of applying moxa treatment. When undertaking the method to empty the wick inside the mugwort, the pain of a fever patient will be reduced and burn damage to the skin is minimized. 3. Wind-cold type weakness and other general moxa treatment techniques have been used for various symptoms detailed, including chest pain, tinnitus, carbuncle, cellulites, cold sense of leg, colic, diarrhea and other illnesses. In addition, it may generate strong fever, and was used to implement the Yeonjebeop (煉臍法). 4.
