Use of Functional Films for Storage of Seed Tuber in Liriope platyphylla (맥문동 뿌리줄기의 저장력 향상을 위한 기능성필름 활용)

  • Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of packaging material on the growth of rootstock of Liriope platyphylla. Methods and Results: This study examined the effects of two types of packaging material, LDPE (low density polyethylene) and functional film on the growth of the tubers of L. platyphylla, at $5^{\circ}C$. During the 16-weeks of storage period, the ratio of loss and decay of the tubers was examined at intervals of 4, 8, and 16 weeks to detect the quality of the plant. After 16 weeks of storage, the treated tubers were own. Subsequently, plant height and the number of leaves were recorded. The results revealed that functional film at $5^{\circ}C$ was the ideal material for the storage of L. platyphylla tubers. The rate of loss was the highest (57.42%) with a onion net and the lowest (22.12%) with a functional film. Similarly, the rate of tuber decay was highest (8.20%) using onion net and the least (4.60%) when the functional film was used. Conclusions: Thus, the use of the functional film proved to be the most effective in the storage of L. platyphylla tubers when compared with the LDPE.

  • Further studies have been done on the constituents of the tubers of Liriope spicata $L_{OUR}$ (Liliaceae). Four steroidal glycosides, tentatively designated as compounds I. II, III and IV, were isolated from the n-BuOH soluble fraction of this plant. The structures of these glycosides were established as ${\beta}-sitosterol$ glucoside, prosapogenin II of spicatoside A, ophiopogonin B, and prosapogenin III of spicatoside A.

Nutritional and Physiological Functionalities of Liriope Tuber (Cheongsim and Liriope Tuber No. 1) (맥문동(청심, 맥문동 1호)의 영양특성 및 생리 기능성)

  • The goal of this study was to investigate the nutritional characteristics and physiological functionality of Liriope tuber for development of new bioactive compound from Liriope tuber. Crude protein and carbohydrate contents of Chenogsim were 9.25% and 77.98%, respectively and crude protein, 9.86% and carbohydrate, 79.08% were also contained in Liriope tuber No.1. Both of Liriope tubers were showed very high contents of sucrose (Cheongsim; 4.08%, Liriope tuber No.1; 4.91%), oxalic acid (0.98%, 0.86%) and glutamic acid (3.736 g/100 g, 4,196 g/100 g). Among several physiological functionalities, tyrosinase inhibitory activity were showed very high 86.4% in Cheongsim and 82.02% in Liriope tuber No.1, respectively.

  • Two novel steroidal saponins designated as spicatosides A(1) and B(2) were isolated from the tubers of Liriope spicata and their structures were elucidated as 25(S)-rus-cogenin -1-0- fJ - D-glucopyranosyl (1$\rightarrow$2)- [$\beta$ - D-xylopyranosyl (1$\rightarrow$3)] -$\beta$- D- fucopyranoside (1) and 26-0-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyI25(S)-22-0-methyl-furost-5-en-l$\beta$, 3$\beta$, 26-trioll-0-fJ -D¬glucopyranosyl (1$\rightarrow$2)- [$\beta$- D-xylopyranosyl (1$\rightarrow$3)] - $\beta$- D- fucopyranoside (2), respectively.

Antioxidant and Sensory Properties of Hot Water Extract of Liriope Tubers treated at Various Preprocess (전처리방법에 따른 맥문동 열수 추출물의 항산화성과 관능 특성)

  • The results of examining total soluble solid, reducing sugar, antioxidant and sensory properties regarding LTD (Liriope Tuber Dried), LTSD (Liriope Tuber Steamed and Dried), LTASD (Liriope Tuber Alcohol-Steamed and Dried), LTDR (LTD Roasted), LTSDR (LTSD Roasted) and LTASDR (LTASD Roasted) are as follows : Total soluble solid content of the roasted samples (LTDR, LTSDR and LTASDR) was more than those of all dried samples (LTD, LTSD and LTASD). According to roasting conditions, total sugar and reducing sugar are significantly greater than the raw and dried sample (LTD) in all heat-treated samples. The browning index was significantly higher in all roasted samples. In particular, LTASDR had a high browning index. Further, the antioxidative activity of the roasted LT samples were higher than that of all dried LT samples. In particular, the LTASDR sample showed significantly high figures in DPPH scavenging activity, ABTS scavenging activity, Nitrite scavenging activity and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. Sensory properties showed an increased acceptance in all evaluation items among roasted samples. In this study, hot water extracts of steamed or alcohol-steamed roasted LT samples had a higher antioxidative effect than that of LTD or LTDR and attained positive results by getting high scores in the overall sensory evaluation. Therefore, when using Liriope tuber in making beverages or herbal recipes, it is appropriate to dry and roast before steaming or spreading with alcohol when treating LT.

Physicochemical Characteristics of Liriope platyphylla Tubers by Drying Process (건조처리에 따른 맥문동의 품질학적 특성)

  • To investigate physiochemical characteristics of Liriope platyphylla tubers by various drying process, proximate constitute, levels of free sugar, organic acid, free amino acid, crude saponin and spicatoside A were analyzed. Drying methods included hot-air drying (DLR, $60^{\circ}C$, 48 hr) and roasting after hot-air drying (RDLR, roasting at $180^{\circ}C$ for 15 min). The moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, ash and NFE (nitrogen free extract) contents of FLR (fresh Liriope platyphylla tuber) were 69.99%, 1.85%, 0.02%, 0.79%, and 27.35%, respectively. The most abundant proximate component of DLR and RDLR was NFE, of which the contents in both sample were 80.09% and 86.07%, respectively. The major free sugars in DLR and RDLR was oligosaccharide II as 56$\sim$57% and the major organic acid was malic acid as 3.06$\sim$3.34%, respectively. In free amino acid, the major amino acid of FLR, DLR and RDLR was serine with contents of 477.41 mg%, 1394.88 mg%, and 180.33 mg%, respectively. The level of serine was significantly decreased by roasting process. The level of crude saponin in FLR, DLR and RDLR were 3.52%, 8.41%, and 10.15%, respectively.

Effects of Organic Fertilizers on Growth and Yield in Liriope platyphylla WANG et TANG (유기질 비료의 사용에 따른 맥문동 생육 및 수량)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of several organic fertilizers on the growth and root yield of Liriope platyphylla was planted 30 cm ${\time}$ 10 cm in field from 1998 to 1999. Six treatments of organic fertilizers applied : N.P.K, NPKC (N,P,K+Compost), NPKCO (N.P.K+Compost+Oilcake),NPKCOF (N.P.K+Compost+Oilcake+Fowldropping), NPKCOFP (N.P.K+Compost+ Oilcake+Fowldropping+plant ash), CO (Compost+Oilcake), COF (Compost+Oilcake+fowldropping). Organic matter, available phosphate, and MgO are NaO of soil increased in all of plots with the addition of organic fertilizers. The leaf length, number of leaves and of tillers were increased by the use of organic fertilizers compared to N.P.K fertilizers compared with N.P.K fertilization. The number of tubers were increased by using the organic fertilization N.P.K fertilization and showed higher in the soil depth of 0${\sim}$20 cm. The dry root yield was showed higher in organic fertilizers than in N.P.K fertilizer and highest dry root yield resulted from NPKOF 39% and NPKCOFP 49%.

Physicochemical Characteristics of Ginseng JungKwa Produced with Hot-Water Extract from Maegmundong (Liriope platyphylla tubers) (맥문동 열수추출액을 이용한 인삼정과의 품질 특성)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the quality characteristics of ginseng JungKwa produced with hot-water extract from Maegmundong (MGJ) instead of sugar. Chemical characteristics of MGJ and control ginseng JungKwa produced by sucrose (CGJ) were measured by proximate constituents, free sugars, ginsenosides, total phenolic compound, flavonoid content, and antioxidative activity was measured by electron donating abilities and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity. Carbohydrate, crude protein, crude ash contents of MGJ were 76.40, 1.46 and 3.49%, where as those of CGJ were 80.01, 0.59 and 0.96%. Free sugar compositions of MGJ were fructose (32.42%), oligosaccharide (16.91%), disaccharide (13.91%) and glucose (13.16%). Eleven ginsenosides types were detected on MGJ and 9 kinds on CGJ; their contents were 740.1 and 675.6 mg%, respectively. Total phenolic compound and flavonoid content were 5.46 and 0.016% on MGJ, 5.02 and 0.014% on CGJ, respectively. In physiological characteristics, the $IC_{50}$ of electron donating ability by DPPH on MGJ was about 34.5 mg/mL and ability was slightly higher than CGJ, although there's not much difference in ability between MGJ and CGJ. Hydrogen peroxide scavenging activities were 92% on MGJ and 96% on CJG when treated at $50{\mu}g$/mL.
