This paper presents the prediction of shear strength of oil contaminated clay using fall cone test used to determine the liquid limit of soil. The penetration depth of fall cone is related to water content of soil. Laboratory vane shear can also be related to water content. To explore the relative correlation between penetration depth of fall cone and laboratory vane shear, both fall cone tests and laboratory vane shear test were carried out with water contents of soil. The developed empirical relationships in this studys showed that the shear strength is reduced to 3.9% with 1% increase of oil content. And, the lesser initial water content of contaminated clay, the more shear strength of contaminated clay is affected by oil content.
The formation mechanism of unstable alkali and its existing states in the clinker were studied. The relation of unstable alkali content vs. other water-soluble components porosity and the distributionof potassium were investigated. The results are as follows :1) Two states of unstable alkali seem to exist in clinker ie compounds of $K_2O-Al_2O_3$ system and free $K_2O$ 2) The content of water-soluble $Al_2O_3$ tends to increase with increase of unstable alkali content, 3) Most of alkalies in clinker are concentrated in liquid phase at high temperature. Therefore it is possible to make various $K_2O-Al_2O_3$ system compounds according to the content of $K_2O$ in the liquid phase of clinker. In this experiment we found out a $K_2O-Al_2O_3$ compound of high $Al_2O_3$ content (34%) and high $K_2O$ content (33%) in clinker with 1.09% unstable alkali. 4) The porosity of clinker tends to increase with increase of unstable alkali content. 5) The amount of trapped alkali vapor may increase in closed pore in the clinker with high alkali and low $SO_3$ condecent. Therefore free $K_2O$ is the condensed alkali on the wall of closed pore in the clinker.

The mathematical model was proposed to simulate ozone transport and remediation in unsaturated soils contaminated with phenanthrene. Soil column experiments were also carried out to calibrate the mathematical model. The experimental results successfully matched with the modeling results in various soil conditions. The model proposed nondimensional fraction factor to reveal reactivity between phenanthrene and gas phase ozone and liquid phase ozone. From sensitivity analysis, the fraction factor and stoichiometric coefficient decreased as water content increased. Simulation results showed increased SOM content retarded the ozone transport and the phenanthrene removal due to increased ozone consumption.
This vacuum preloading combined with polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculation was proposed to separating solid-liquid in waste slurry and to improving bearing capacity of soft soil ground. By using waste slurry taken from drilled shaft construction site in Shanghai, China, a series of settling column tests with four typical flocculants and one normal for waste slurry were carried out for comparative analysis. The optimal amounts for each flocculant were obtained from the column tests. Then, model tests on vacuum preloading with anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) flocculation and without flocculants were carried out. The out of water and the settlement of slurry surface ground were monitored during the model tests, and the changes in water content, particle-size and pore-size distributions in different positions after the model tests were measured and discussed. It is found that water content of the waste slurry without APAM flocculation changed from 204 to 195% by 24 hours standing and 15 hours vacuum preloading, while the water content of the waste slurry with APAM flocculation was declined from 163 to 96% by 24 hours standing, and was further reduced into 37% by 136 hours vacuum preloading, which shows that the combined method is feasible and effective.
For the development of a general mathermatical model to predict the density of liquid foods based on temperature and composition of each major component, the major components of liquid foods considered in this study were water, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber and ash. These samples were subdivided into sixteen pure components. The density of each sample was measured by a volumetric pycnometer at the temperature range of $0^{\circ}C\;to\;100^{\circ}C$ for three different solid content suspensions, The density values of pure component solids were calculated from the assumed model at given temperature, using the experimental values of three different solid content suspensions with known water fraction and density model of water. Using these calculated density data at the temperature range of $0^{\circ}C\;to\;100^{\circ}C$, the coefficients of ther density model for each pure component were determined by the OPT Subroutine Program. The density model developed in this study can be used to predict the density values of liquid foods at given temperature and composition.
The formation of biopolymer-soil matrices mainly depends on biopolymer type and concentration, soil type, pore fluid and phase transfer to influence its strengthening efficiency. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of sodium alginate (SA) treated kaolinite are investigated through compaction test, thread rolling teat, fall cone test and unconfined compression test with considering biopolymer concentration, curing time, initial water content, mixing method. The results show that the liquid limit slightly decreases from 69.9% to 68.3% at 0.2% SA and then gradually increases to 98.3% at 5% SA. At hydrated condition, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of SA treated clay at 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 3% concentrations is 2.57, 4.5, 7.1 and 5.48 times of untreated clay (15.7 kPa) at the same initial water content. In addition, the optimum biopolymer concentration, curing time, mixing method and initial water content can be regarded as 2%, 28 days, room temperature water-dry mixing (RD), 50%-55% to achieve the maximum unconfined compressive strength, which corresponds to the UCS increment of 593%, compared to the maximum UCS of untreated clay (780 kPa).
This study identifies the factors improving bread quality by using fermented liquid dough. Fermented liquid dough, the main part of bread dough, contains yeasts that are prepared in order to enhance the fermentation rate. This study investigates the fermentation rate after mixing dough, the pH of dough, loaf volume, water activity, hardness, and sensory properties of loaf bread samples with different amounts of fermented liquid dough. The fermentation rate was slightly higher in the bread samples, the control dough and 10% fermented liquid dough, than in samples with more than 20% dough. The pH values of dough decreased with an increase in the content of fermented liquid dough. The loaf volume of bread with 10% fermented liquid dough was the highest. The water activity of loaf bread increased with an increase in amount of fermented liquid dough. For the sensory evaluation of loaf bread, adding 10% fermented liquid dough improved the loaf volume and evenness of baking. These results suggest that 10% fermented liquid dough increased the fermentation rate and bread quality. Further research is required to enhance internal quality characteristics of loaf bread, including taste and flavor.
Although the exterior wood such as column may frequently contact with liquid water, little work has been found to measure liquid water absorption in wood. To investigate the moisture diffusivity of wood in the longitudinal direction including bound water and free water movement, liquid water absorption test was conducted at the room temperature. The order of magnitude for absorption coefficient and diffusivity was Japanese elm, horn beam, hemlock, spruce, radiata pine, and painted maple. The Boltzmann transformation method was used to determine the diffusivity from measured moisture content distributions in the absorption test. The shape of the curve representing the dependence of diffusivity with moisture content was similar in test samples. The diffusivity decreased with increasing moisture content until around the fiber saturation point and then increased at the nonhygroscopic region, which ranged from $10^{-10}$ to $10^{-7}m^2/s$.

In this study, the novel concept catalytic reactor was designed for water-gas shift reaction (WGS) under high pressure. The novel concept catalytic reactor was composed of an autoclave, the catalyst, and liquid water. Cu-ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ as the low temperature shift catalyst was used for WGS reaction. WGS in the novel concept catalytic reactor was carried out at the ranges of 150~$250^{\circ}C$ and 30~50 atm. The liquid water was filled at the bottom of the autoclave catalytic reactor and the catalyst of pellet type was located at the gas-liquid water interface. It was concluded that WGS reaction occurred over the surface of catalysts partially wetted with liquid water. The conversion of CO for WGS was also controlled with changing content of Cu and ZnO used as the catalytic active components. Meanwhile, the catalyst of honey comb type coated with Cu-ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ was used in order to increase the contact area between wet-surface of catalyst and the reactants of gas phase. It was confirmed from these experiments that $H_2$/CO ratio of the simulated coal gas increased from 0.5 to 0.8 by WGS at gas-liquid water interface over the wet surface of honey comb type catalyst at $250^{\circ}C$ and 50 atm.
This test was carried out to present criterion to measure the liquid limit of weathered granite soil by using the flow-table method whose operation is easier and more convenient than slump test. The results are as follows. 1. Since liquid limit of weathered granite soil depends upon the particle size distribution, weatheredness and content of colored minerals, maximum particle size should be prescribed when the testing rule of liquid limit by flow-table method is enacted. 2. If take the averaged water content as liquid limit where the height and width of flow are 1 cm respectively by 10 times dropping, this liquid limit is slightly less than the one by slump test. The differance of liquid limit between flow table method and slump test is about 10%. 3. Correlation curves of flow width-water content and flow hight-water content show similar shapes. Those are straight lines in semi-logarithm paper just as liquid limit test. 4. This flow-table method is more convenient and has less personal error of measurement than slump test does. So flow-table method would be favourably utilized for judging the engineering properties of soil.
