The main purpose of this study was to investigate sulfur dioxide removal performance of flue gas desulfurization system utilizing a Spray Absorption/Drying Reactor. In this system, the size of droplets was considered the most significant factor and tested using a PDA system. Lime slurry flow rate, operating temperature, calcium/sulfur (Ca/S) ratio and applied air pressure were selected as major operation variables and tested/analyzed in terms of system performance. The results are as follows. 1. The $SO_2$ removal efficiencies were 49%, 74%, 85% for Ca$(OH)_2$ slurry flow rate of 10, 20, 30 ml/min, which implies that the increase of slurry flow rate improves removal efficiency. The optimum slurry flow rate in this study was, however, considered 20 ml/min because of constraints of system troubles and absorbent utilization. 2. As Ca/S ratio increased, $SO_2$ removal efficiency was observed to increase. 3. As air pressure, at the atomizing nozzole, increased from 3 to 5 $kg/cm^2, SO_2$ removal efficiency increased from 74% to 80%, because of droplet size reduction due to pressure increase during atomizing process and the increase of surface area, helping mass transfer between gas and liquid phase.

This paper describes a modified Roebuck compression device as a potential compression device of a rotating cryogenic refrigeration system in superconducting machine such as generator or motor. The conventional cryogen transfer method from stationary refrigeration system to rotating system can be eliminated by an on-board cryogenic refrigeration system that utilizes well-designed multi-stage modified Roebuck compression device. This paper shows basic thermodynamic analysis of modified Roebuck compression device and its application for compressing neon at 77 K with substantial pressure ratio when the rotor diameter is 0.8 m with rotating speed of 3600 rpm. The device does not require any moving part in rotating frame, but two separate thermal reservoirs to convert thermal energy into mechanical compression work. The high temperature thermal reservoir is atmospheric environment at 300 K and the low temperature thermal reservoir is assumed as a liquid nitrogen bath at 77 K. The concept of the compression device in this paper demonstrates its usefulness of generating high-pressure neon at 77 K for rotating J-T neon refrigeration cycle of superconducting rotor.
Small gas bubbles are used in many environmental and industrial processes for solid-liquid separations or to facilitate heat and mass transfer between phases. This study examines some of the factors that affect the bubble volume and size processed in the EF (electroflotation) process. The effect of electrode material, NaCl dosage, current and electrode distance were studied. The results showed that the generated bubble volume with electrode material lay in: Pt/Ti ${\fallingdotseq}$ Ru/Ti ${\fallingdotseq}$ Ir/Ti > Ti electrode. The more NaCl dosage was high, the smaller bubble was generated due to the low electric power. Bubble generation was increased with increase of current. With the increase of NaCl dosage, bubble generation was increased at same electric power (16.2 W). Generated bubble volume was not affected by electrode distance. However, no clear trends in bubble size as a function of these parameters were evident.
A high-temperature sodium stainless steel heat pipe was fabricated and its performance has been investigated. The working fluid was sodium and it was sealed inside a straight tube container made of stainless steel. The amount of sodium occupied approximately 20% of the total volume of the heat pipe and its weight was 65.7gram. The length of a stainless steel container is 1002mm and its outside diameter is 25.4mm. Performance tests were carried out in a room air condition under a free convective environment and the measured temperatures are presented. The start-up behavior of the heat pipe from a frozen state was investigated for various heat input values between 600W and 1205W. In steady state, axial temperature distributions of a heat pipe were measured and its heat transfer rates were estimated in the range of vapor temperature from 50$0^{\circ}C$ to 63$0^{\circ}C$. It is found that there are small temperature differences in the vapor core along the axial direction of a sodium heat pipe for the high operating temperatures. But for the range of low operating temperatures there are large temperature drops along the vapor core region of a sodium heat pipe, because a small vapor pressure drop makes a large temperature drop. The transition temperature was reached more rapidly in the cases of high heat input rate for the sodium heat pipe.
It was investigated thermal performances on two array types of a serial circulation and a two-way parallel circulation for six water-cooled cold plates covered with non-metallic material (polycarbonate, PC) to reduce weight of the cooling devices for humanoid robot cooling. Six cold plates attached on $10{\times}10\;mm^2$ copper base : $0.5{\times}0.5\;mm^2$ pin-finned surfaces of 1.5 mm high with 0.5 mm array spacing, was mounted on six copper heating blocks with isothermal conditions of $50{\sim}90^{\circ}C$, respectively. In order to compare thermal characteristics according to two circulation types, the surface temperatures of heating blocks and the cooling water temperatures at inlets and outlets of cold plates were measured. From the results, it was found that a two-way parallel circulation was better performance than a serial circulation in terms of total thermal resistance, total heat transfer rate, and surface temperature rises from $1^{st}$ heating block to last one for six multiple cold plates.
When the leaves, roots and stem segments of seedling of Polygonatum odoratum were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium with 2.0mg/l BAP, stem segments were the most efficient explants for adventitious shoot inductino. To observe the efficient combination of growth regulators on the adventitious shoot formation , stem segments were cultured on MS medium with various kinds of cytokinins (BAP, kinetin, zeatin). From this experiment, cytokinin treatement was prerequisite for theadventitious shoot formatino, especially BAP was the most effective. Auxin (NAA or IBA) in combination with cyotokinin highly enhanced the adventitious shoot formation. Twenty five percents of explants produced the adventitious shoots on medium with 2.0mg/l BAP solely, while 83% of explants produced the adventitious shoots on medium with 2.0mg/l BAP and 0.1mg/l IBA. Root formationform adventitious shoot was promoted after transfer to 1/2 MS medium supplemented with 0.1mg/l IBA and 0.5mg/l zeatin, thereafter the plantlets with shoots and roots were cultured on 1/2MS medium lacking growth regulators. When the stem segments were cultured to MS medium with 1.0mg/l 2,4 NAA and IBA , yellow and nodulous cali were formed from the stem segments which were developed into adventitious roots. These roots were actively grew after transferred to MS liquid medium lacking growth regulators.
The population of indole-forming thermophile was obtained for the first time several samples of soil and compost manure. The population was highly enriched by successive transfer in the tryptophan liquid medium treated with antibiotics and dilution subculture cloning. Both indole-forming thermophile might be a Gram-negative bacterium hitherto unknown, but its pure culture has not yet been established due to the inability to grow on the solid media.

Since more than 30% of the liquid rocket engine failures occur during the start-up process, and the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) is especially sensitive to small changes in propellant conditions, a 2% error in the valve position or a 0.1sec timing error could lead to significant damage of the engine, simulation modeling of start-up process is important. However, there are many difficulties associated with engine start-up process caused by nonlinear mass flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with filling an unconditioned engine system with cryogenic propellants. In this paper, we modelled a SSME simulation model using partially Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method to solve these problems and checked the performance by comparing with the performance of the simulation model using the lumped method under the state of normal condition.
The reflood test data from the rod bundle heat transfer (RBHT) test facility showed that the grids in the upper portion of the rod bundle could become wet well before the arrival of the quench front and that the sizes of liquid droplets downstream of a wet grid could not be predicted by the droplet breakup models for a dry grid. To investigate the water droplet generation from a wet grid spacer, a viscous linear temporal instability model of the water sheet issuing from the trailing edge of the grid with the surrounding steam up-flow is developed in this study. The Orr-Sommerfeld equations along with appropriate boundary conditions for the flow are solved using Chebyshev series expansions and the Tau-Galerkin projection method. The effects of several physical parameters on the water sheet oscillation are studied by determining the variation of the temporal growth rate with the wavenumber. It is found that a larger relative steam velocity to water velocity has a tendency to destabilize the water sheet with increased dynamic pressure. On the other hand, a larger ratio of steam boundary layer to the half water sheet thickness has a stabilizing effect on the water sheet oscillation. Droplet diameters downstream of the spacer grid predicted by the present model are found to compare reasonably well with the data obtained at the RBHT test facility as well as with other data recently reported in the literature.
Biotransformation is a good tool to synthesize regioselective compounds. It could be performed with diverse sources of genes, and microorganisms provide a myriad of gene sources for biotransformation. We were interested in modification of flavonoids, and therefore, we cloned a putative O-methyltransferase from Bacillus cereus, BcOMT-2. It has a 668-bp open reading frame that encodes a 24.6-kDa protein. In order to investigate the modification reaction mediated by BcOMT-2, it was expressed in E. coli as a His-tag fusion protein and purified to homogeneity. Several substrates such as naringenin, luteolin, kaempferol, and quercetin were tested and reaction products were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). BcOMT-2 could transfer a methyl group to substrates that have a 3' functional hydroxyl group, such as luteolin and quercetin. Comparison of the HPLC retention time and UV spectrum of the quercetin reaction product with corresponding authentic 3'-methylated and 4'-methylated compounds showed that the methylation position was at either the 3'-hydroxyl or 4'-hydroxyl group. Thus, BcOMT-2 transfers a methyl group either to the 3'-hydroxyl or 4'-hydroxyl group of flavonoids when both hydroxyl groups are available. Among several flavonoids that contain a 3'- and 4'-hydroxyl group, fisetin was the best substrate for the BcOMT-2.
