TRIGGERING AND ENERGETICS OF A SINGLE DROP VAPOR EXPLOSION: THE ROLE OF ENTRAPPED NON-CONDENSABLE GASES

  • The present work pertains to a research program to study Molten Fuel-Coolant Interactions (MFCI), which may occur in a nuclear power plant during a hypothetical severe accident. Dynamics of the hot liquid (melt) droplet and the volatile liquid (coolant) were investigated in the MISTEE (Micro-Interactions in Steam Explosion Experiments) facility by performing well-controlled, externally triggered, single-droplet experiments, using a high-speed visualization system with synchronized digital cinematography and continuous X-ray radiography. The current study is concerned with the MISTEE-NCG test campaign, in which a considerable amount of non-condensable gases (NCG) are present in the film that enfolds the molten droplet. The SHARP images for the MISTEE-NCG tests were analyzed and special attention was given to the morphology (aspect ratio) and dynamics of the air/ vapor bubble, as well as the melt drop preconditioning. Energetics of the vapor explosion (conversion ratio) were also evaluated. The MISTEE-NCG tests showed two main aspects when compared to the MISTEE test series (without entrapped air). First, analysis showed that the melt preconditioning still strongly depends on the coolant subcooling. Second, in respect to the energetics, the tests consistently showed a reduced conversion ratio compared to that of the MISTEE test series.

입자 퇴적이 승용차용 정전 필터의 미세 입자 포집 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Particle Loading on the Collection Performance of an Electret Cabin Air Filter for Submicron Particles)

  • An electret filter is composed of permanently charged electret fibers and is widely used in applications requiring high collection efficiency and low-pressure drop. In this work, the collection efficiency of the filter media used in manufacturing cabin air filters was investigated by using poly-disperse particles when submicron particles were loaded. Long-term experiments were conducted by applying two different charging states, which were spray electrification and charge equilibrium by bipolar ionization. In order to investigate the effect of particle loading in filter media, NaCl particles were generated from 0.1% and 1% solutions by an atomizer. Liquid DOS particles were used to evaluate the effect of liquid particles on the collection efficiency of an electret filter. The results show significant effect of charge amount and size distribution of loading particles on the collection performance of a filter media in submicron region. Smaller particles loaded in electret fibers cause a more rapid degradation in collection efficiency and have lower minimum efficiency with time. The pressure drop of a filter media do rarely increase when the collection efficiency decreases to the minimum value. For the larger particles charged by spray electrification, which have charge amounts more than that of Boltzmann equilibrium charge distribution, the pressure drop of a filter media slowly increases in comparison with that of equilibrium charged particles. For DOS particles it is shown that the charging level of an electret filter severely decreases and the collection efficiency is below 10% in some particle size range.

  • 선회형 미립화기의 분무거동에 관한 논의는 현재 여러 연구자들에 의해 활발히 논의되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이류체 내부혼합형 선회노즐의 특성을 파악하고자 공기와 액체의 질량 비를 바꿔가며 최적의 미립화 조건을 알아보기 위하여 실시되었다. 이를 위하여 분무 유동장의 평균속도, 파동속도 및 액적크기에 관한 비교를 정량적으로 분석하였다. 각 유동조건에 따른 지수함수를 만족하는 상관관계 또한 도출하였는데, 이는 질량 비에 관계없이 거의 동일함을 알 수 있었고, 질량비가 높을수록 선회 각이 30o인 경우가 미립화 특성이 가장 우수하였다. 따라서, 본 연구에서 이루어진 결과에서는 노즐의 형상이 분무유동에 미치는 여러 인자 중 가장 중요한 것이라 여겨진다.

  • 액체로켓 추진시스템에서 가압시스템은 발사체 추진제 탱크의 얼리지 공간에 제어된 가스를 공급하는 것이다 가압시스템에서 고온 가스 열교환기를 적용하는 데는 가압제의 비용적을 증가시켜 전체 발사체 시스템의 중량을 감소시키는 장점이 있다. 그러므로 가압시스템 성능에 있어서 주목할 만한 개선점은 특히 극저온 시스템에서 얻어질 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 외부 유체와 가압제로 공기와 $CN_2$를 각각 적용하였다. 가압제 토출 특성에 관한 수치 해석은 PTF에서 수행된 실험 결과와 비교되었다. 해석과 실험 결과의 오차는 약 ${\pm}15%$ 이내로 나타났다. 이러한 해석적 접근을 사용하면 액체산소에 잠겨진 극저온 가압제의 온도강하율을 예측할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Antibiotic Resistant Microbial Contamination (Enterobacter cloacae) Derived from Egg Yolk and Frozen Semen Extender in Porcine In Vitro Fertilized Embryos

  • The present study was to investigate the source of contamination during semen processing for in vitro uses. In the present study, frozen semen was prepared from liquid semen in our laboratory for in vitro fertilization (IVF) experiments due to lack of fresh semen. Antibiotics were added in the frozen semen extender (kanamycin and gentamicin) and in vitro culture (IVC) medium (gentamicin) for further inhibiting growth of microorganisms. Nevertheless, proliferations of microorganisms were observed in IVC culture drop during culturing of IVF embryos using frozen semen. Randomly 3 samples were taken from the liquid semen, frozen semen and egg yolk. Contaminated IVC medium, frozen-thawed semen, liquid semen and egg yolk were cultured in de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe (MRS) agar medium. Whitish colonies were detected in contaminated IVC drop, frozen-thawed semen samples and egg yolk but no colonies were formed in liquid semen samples. Gram-negative and rod-shaped identical bacteria were found in both frozen-thawed semen sample and contaminated IVC drop and egg yolk samples. Enterobacter cloacae were confirmed by API 20E kit according to manufacturer's instruction with identification value (% ID) 94.3% and T index 0.88. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were done according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) by using ampicillin, amikacin, cephalothin, gentamicin, kanamycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin test. Among them Enterobacter cloacae were resistant to ampicillin, amikacin, cephalothin, gentamicin, kanamycin but susceptible to tetracycline, oxytetracycline, sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin. From these findings it could be suggested that this contamination sources might be from egg yolk.

  • EM(ElectroMagnetic) pump is used for the purpose of transporting liquid sodium coolant with electrical conductivity in the LMR(Liquid Metal Reactor). In the present study, computer program for the pilot annular linear EM pump has been developed for the maximum flowrate with 200 l/min and maximum developing pressure with 3 bar. Firstly, Balance equation is induced by the equivalent circuit method which is commonly employed to analyze linear induction machines and the calculation of the hydraulic pressure drop. Then, design equation is converted to the computer program and optimum pump variables are determined by this code. The code is verified by the comparative analysis with the characteristic of the commercialized pump.

액정법을 이용한 휜-관 열교환기 휜의 열적 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Thermal Characteristics of Finned-tube Heat Exchanger by Using the Liquid Crystal Technique)

  • This study was discussed about the thermal characteristics of finned tube heat exchanger having two row used in the air-conditioning application. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient were measured and investigated for the 3 times models of plain fin. Also the temperature distribution and heat conduction in the fin was measured by using the liquid crystal method. The surface temperature of rear row was nearly constant, and heat conduction in the fin was stronger near the front row than the rear row.

Microscopic Spray Characteristics in the Effervescent Atomizer with Two Aerator Tubes

  • An experimental study is performed on atomization characteristics and stable operating conditions for the injection of high viscous waste vegetable oil using an effervescent atomizer with 2 aerator tubes. Consideration is given to the effects of ALR and liquid viscosity on the velocity and mean diameter of the injected droplet. It is found that (i) as ALR increases, the axial velocity of the droplet is increased, while half-velocity width and SMD are decreased regardless of the change in liquid viscosities, (ii) the rate of fine drop distribution occupied in the total spray field is increased with an increase in ALR, and (iii) the effect of viscosity on the atomization characteristics is minor. Consequently, it is expected that the effervescent atomizer will exhibit an excellent atomization performance at the high ALR condition, regardless of liquid viscosities.

전기수력학적 분무에서 노즐재질이 입경분포에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Nozzle Material on Drop Size Distribution in Electrohydrodynamic Spraying)

  • When an aqueous liquid such as water having high electric conductivity and high surface tension is discharged from a nozzle under a strong DC electric field, fine drops ranging from 30 to 450 microns can be obtained only through the spindle mode. In the present study, effects of the electric conductivity and the surface wettability of nozzle materials on formation of drops with this mode were investigated. For that, three nozzles with the same size but with different materials were prepared and tested; a stainless steel needle, and a plain and a metal (gold)-coated (except for the tip portion) silica needles. Uniform drops were obtained with the gold-coated silica nozzle over the wider range of the DC voltage input. That is, formation of the liquid cone and detachment of the liquid spindle (ligament) can be more stabilized and frequent with the needles having high electric conductivity but with low surface wettability at their tips.

이중 선회 분무간의 거리와 연료온도 변화에 따른 분무특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (The Experimental Study on the Effects of Temperature and Distance between Injectors on the Spray Characteristics of Duplex Swirl Injector)

  • Experimental studies on effects of the interaction of duplex swirl injector and the liquid temperature on the spray characteristics were conducted. Water and fuel were used as a test fluid for the experiments. The drop size distributions of the liquid spray were measured with Malvern particle sizer. The liquid temperature and distance of injectors were adopted as the operating parameter. The results show that SMD decrease as the increases of fuel temperature and pressure. The spray angle increase as fluid temperature increases. For fuel spray, SMD of impacting surface increase as the distance of injectors is lengthened.
