  • The discotic liquid crystal in compensating film used for the viewing angle improvement of the twist nematic liquid crystal display panel is analyzed. For the optical characterization of the compensating film, we measured the polarization state of the light passing through the film as the tilt angle and the azimuth angle of the film were varied, and then we compared the measured polarization state with the calculated one. Finally we suggested the best fit configuration of the discotic liquid crystal.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of the SiC (Silicon Carbide) thin film. The SiC thin film exhibits good chemical and thermal stability. The good thermal and chemical stability make SiC an attractive candidate for electronic applications. A vertical alignment of nematic liquid crystal by atomic beam exposure on the SiC thin film surface was achieved. The about $87^{\circ}$ of stable pretilt angle was achieved at the range from $30^{\circ}\;to\;45^{\circ}$ of incident angle. Consequently, the vertical alignment effect of liquid crystal electro-optical characteristic by the atomic beam alignment method on the SiC thin film layer can be achieved.

  • We demonstrate an effect of annealing temperature on imprinting process of BiLaO thin film for liquid crystal alignment. BiLaO prepared sol-gel process was deposited by spin coating on a glass substrate, and then transferred to a pre-fabricated aligned pattern which is fabricated on a silicon wafer by laser interference lithography. Thin film was annealed at different temperature of 100, 150, 200, and 250 ℃. From the polarized optical microscopy analysis, the liquid crystal orientation was not uniform at the annealing temperature of 200 ℃ or lower and the uniform liquid crystal alignment characteristics were confirmed at the annealing temperature of 250 ℃. From atomic force microscopy, the pattern was not transferred at a temperature of 200 ℃ or lower. In contrast, the pattern was transferred at 250 ℃. Anisotropy of the thin film was obtained by the alignment pattern transferred at a temperature of 250 ℃, and the liquid crystal molecules could be evenly oriented on the thin film. Therefore, it was confirmed that the liquid crystal alignment process by the imprinting process of the BiLaO oxide film was affected by the annealing temperature.

  • We demonstrate an alignment technology using an imprinting process on an inorganic NiOx film. The aligned nanopattern was fabricated on a silicon wafer by laser interference lithography. The aligned nano pattern was then imprinted onto the sol-gel driven NiOx film using an imprinting process at an annealing temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. After the imprinting process, parallel grooves had been formed on the NiOx film. Atomic force microscopy and water contact angle measurements were performed to confirm the parallel groove on the NiOx film. The grooves caused liquid crystal alignment through geometric restriction, similar to grooves formed by the rubbing process on polyimide. The liquid crystal cell exhibited a pretilt angle of $0.2^{\circ}$, which demonstrated homogeneous alignment.

  • We firstly report liquid crystal shutter based on plastic film and its application to 3D shutter for stereoscopic displays. Plastic liquid crystal shutters have remarkable advantages compared to conventional glass liquid crystal shutters. They are thin, light and non-breakable so that very comfortable 3D shutter eye-wear can be realized using them. The concepts, optical performances and reliability test results of plastic film liquid crystal shutters are presented.

  • We have studied the pressure-dependent liquid crystal's dynamics in a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal panel with thin film transistor by applying an external pressure to it. When the external pressure is applied to the panel in a dark state, the disclination lines were generated as a light leakage whereas they did not appear in a simple test cell that has only pixel and common electrodes. It was because the disclination lines were Provoked by the electric field between pixel electrode and data/gate bus line for active matrix driving. Consequently, the external pressure resulted in dynamic instability of the liquid crystal so that the disclination lines at the data/gate bus line intruded into the active area.

  • Two dimensional phase transition and three dimensional propagation of layer structures of liquid crystal film are investigated by using surface second harmonic generation method. We have found a distinctive first order phase transition between a monolayer phase and a stable 3-layer phase of 8CB liquid crystal film.

  • We demonstrate the vertical alignment of liquid crystal on $a-SiO_x$ film surface using the ion beam exposure. Liquid crystal can be aligned vertically by the rotational oblique evaporation of $a-SiO_x$ film. However, the electro-optic switching behavior of liquid crystal along random directions results in disclination lines. We found that we can achieve highly uniform alignment of liquid crystal without disclination lines by using the ion beam exposure. We found from XRD and XPS data that the vertical alignment can be achieved when x approaches 1.5 at the $a-SiO_x$ film surface. We have shown that the pretilt angle can be controlled by changing ion beam parameters, such as the ion beam energy, the angle of incidence, and the exposure time. We found that whether liquid crystals can be aligned vertically or homogeneously on $a-SiO_x$ film can be predicted simply by measuring the change in optical transmittance by deposition of $a-SiO_x$ thin film layers. We also have shown that a liquid crystal cell aligned vertically by the ion beam exposure exhibits the voltage-transmittance curve similar to that of a rubbed polyimide cell.

  • The formation of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) film reflecting a broadbanded visible spectrum by application of a liquid crystalline coating followed by UV polymerization (photo-curing) is described. Also, the formation of patterned coatings obtained by a sequence of UV exposure steps is discussed. Such coatings play an important role in the improvement of the performance of liquid crystal displays. In order to make these CLC films, we synthesized new cholesteric liquid crystal molecules (Ch-chol) containing the active reaction site to UV light and investigated to broaden the bandwidth of these cholesteric filters based on the various UV treatments.

  • We have studied liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities for homeotropic alignment and the control of tilt angles on the $SiO_{x}$ thin film by electron beam evaporation method. A high tilt angle of about $86.5^{\circ}$ was obtained, and also the suitable tilt angle of the NLC on the $SiO_{x}$ thin film at $20{\sim}50\;nm$ thickness with e-beam evaporation can be achieved. The uniform LC alignment on the $SiO_{x}$ thin film surfaces with electron beam evaporation can be achieved. It is considerated that the LC alignment on the $SiO_{x}$ thin film by electron beam evaporation is attributed to elastic interaction between LC molecules and micro-grooves at the $SiO_{x}$ thin film surface created by evaporation.
