  • 최근에 많이 사용되는 휴대용 기기의 표시장치인 액정표시장치(LCD)에는 반사형이 많이 사용되고 있다. 반사형 LCD는 전력소모의 많은 부분을 차지하는 backlight를 주변광원으로 대체하여 전력소모를 줄일 수 있는 표시장치로 많이 연구되고 있다. 특히, 반사형 LCD는 밝기면에서 우수한 single-polarizer mode가 적합하다$^{1.3}$ . 그러나 single-polarizer mode는 two-polarizer mode와 비교해서 dark 상태에서의 누설광이 많이 발생하여 대비비가 저하되는 단점이 있다. 이 점을 보완하기 위하여 전 파장 영역에서 편광판에 의해 반사광이 차단될 수 있도록 설계를 했다.   • Recently, Display devices have become important in the information-oriented society and flat display devices are greatly demanded. Liquid crystal display(LCD) represents one of the most promising devices for large size desk-top monitors, notebook PC and car navigation system. However LCD cannot give forth light itself and must have backlight system. The most popular backlighting system is composed of a lighting-guide plate and CCFL as a lighting source. The number of CCFL must increase up if the area of display is increased. So a new backlighting source with high luminance is needed for large LCDs. In this paper, we proposed a surface discharge FFL with the new electrode structure like the needle shaped electrode as the variation of cell structure to high luminance and low power consumption. In comparison with different electrode structure it has low discharge voltage and current and good optical characteristics. So it has better discharge characteristics than different surface discharge FFL and can be fungible for a backlight as a lighting source in LCDs.

  • This work presents a novel lighting technology based on a YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphor converter with micro line lenticular structure, to accompany an array of bare LED chips on a board. This technology is especially effective in TFT-LCD backlight applications as it offers the advantages of high light radiation efficiency, low color deviation, uniform luminance distribution and compact backlight thickness. Additionally, the proposed configuration is low-cost, can be manufactured quickly, and can be mass-produced economically.

  • 현재 사용하고 있는 LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) Backlight용 램프는 주로 CCFL(Cold Cathod Fluorescent Lamp)과 EEFL(External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp)이 사용되고 있다. 하지만 이 램프는 수은을 사용하여 RoHS(the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment)규제가 점점 강화되면서 사용이 제한되고 있으며, 이에 따라 수은을 사용하지 않는 램프의 제작이 불가피해지고 있다. 또한 LCD TV는 CRT와 PDP와는 다른 LCD만의 Hold-type 특성과 LC(Liquid Crystal)의 응답속도로 인하여 Motion Blur현상이 나타나는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 RoHS 규제를 만족시키는 무수은 면광원 램프를 구동하기 위한 인버터를 제안한다. 제안한 인버터는 포워드 방식을 사용하여 반도체 소자 및 자기 소자의 수를 줄여서 구동회로가 간단하다. 또한 면광원 램프를 세로방향으로 6블록으로 나누어 스캔구동을 하여 Motion Blur현상을 저감 시켰다. 끝으로 실험을 통하여 제안한 인버터의 유용성을 입증하였다.

  • Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology (TMD) has firstly succeeded in mass production of OCB (Optically Compensated Bend) mode liquid crystal display panels which have excellent moving picture quality almost the same as CRT. We have newly developed 32 -inch diagonal HD ($1366{\times}768\;pixels$) panels using OCB mode and low temperature p-Si TFT (LTPS) array substrates. High performance of brightness of $600cd/m^2$ and contrast ratio of 600 : 1 was obtained by using pseudo-impulse driving method to insert a black period between continuous two frames, and also by using blinking backlight method. Furthermore, moving picture response time (MPRT) 6.5ms has been obtained by optimization of black insert driving and backlight blinking, without the great sacrifices of contrast ratio and luminance.

LCD 디스플레이를 위한 무작위 화소 추출 기반 백라이트 디밍 (Random Pixel Sampling-based Backlight Dimming for Liquid Crystal Display)

  • 본 논문에서는 인지 화질을 고려할 수 있는 측정 방법인 structural similarity (SSIM)기반의 백라이트 디밍에서 높은 계산량을 저감할 수 있는 무작위 화소 샘플링 기법을 제안한다. 제안한 방법에서는 우선 전체 프레임에서 미리 정의된 개수만큼의 화소를 무작위로 선택한 후 이를 블록 형태로 결합한다. 이 후 해당 블록에서 SSIM 계산에 필요한 변수들을 추정하기 때문에 한 프레임을 사용하는 기존 방법 대비 계산 시간을 큰 폭으로 줄일 수 있다. 실험 결과에서 기존 방법과 비교했을 때 제안한 방법은 평균 SSIM은 거의 유지하면서도 평균 파워 소모와 평균 계산 시간을 각각 38.1766 %, 99.5828 % 까지 줄일 수 있었다.

Correlation Between the Optical Performance of the Reflective Polarizer and the Structure of LCD Backlight

  • The optical performance of the reflective polarizer was investigated over three kinds of direct-lit backlights and/or different configurations of the optical sheets. The optical gain factor achieved by using the reflective polarizer increased as the diffuse nature of the optical sheet was enhanced, because of the more efficient polarization conversion. In addition, the gain factor decreased substantially in flat-lamp backlights compared to tubular-lamp backlights, which was ascribed to the high loss factor during the polarization recycling process due to the complex structure and large area of flat lamps. All these results suggested that reducing the loss factor of the backlight is very important for efficient polarization conversion and thus high optical gain of the reflective polarizer.

  • We describe a 32" liquid-crystal display (LCD) with multi-touch sensing capability by integrating IR detector arrays onto the LED backlight plate. A transparent light guide is placed in front of the display screen, with IR LEDs disposed at its edges and emitting IR light into the light guide, the light is trapped by total internal reflection within the light guide to be as touch-sensing light. A physical contact with the acrylic plate surface will stimulate some trapped light to be escaped from the light guide and pass through LCD panel to be detected by the IR detectors. The touch-sensing LCD with this configuration can locate simultaneous multiple touche points on the touchable surface.

Electric-optical Characteristics of Backlight Unit with LED Light Source in Low Temperature Condition

  • LCD (liquid crystal display) industry is needed to goods of high reliability and is interested in products without harmful material. In this experiment, we made the LED backlight unit for Automotive-navigation. And for making this backlight unit we used to eight side emitting type white LEDs with 1 W high power of the lumileds company. We could know that this backlight unit releases to 6500 nit in 14 W power consumption and start up voltage time is under the 15ms in the ambient temperature $-20\;^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, light-emitting-diode (LED) backlight driving circuits and dimming method for medium-sized and large liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are proposed. The double loop control method, the intelligent-phase-shifted PWM dimming method, the fast-switching current regulator, and the current matching techniques are proposed to improve not only the current regulation characteristics and the power efficiency but also the current matching characteristics and the transient response of the LED current. The brightness of the backlight using the proposed local dimming method was determined from the histogram of the local block to reduce the power consumption of the backlight without image distortion. The measured maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for medium-sized LCDs was 90%, and the simulation results showed an 88% maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for large LCDs. The maximum backlight power-saving ratio of the proposed dimming method was 41.7% in the simulation with a high-contrast image. The experiment and simulation results showed that the performance of LEDs as LCD backlight units (BLUs) improved with the proposed circuits and method.
