  • Experiments were performed for freezing of an initially superheated or nonsuperheated liquid phase in a cooled vertical tube. The liquid was placed in a copper tube whose surface maintained a uniform temperature during the data run and the freezing occurred in a copper tube. The phase change medium was n-odtadecane, a paraffin which freezes at about $61^{\circ}C$. Measurements were made which yielded information about the time dependence of the freezing front, of the amount of frozen mass, and of the various energy components extracted from the tube. The time-wise decay of the initial liquid superheat was also measured. Initial superheat of the liquid tends to moderately diminish the rozen mass and associated latent energy extraction at small times but has lit tie effect on these quantities at large tiems. Natural convection in the liquid Plays a modest role only at small times and disappears when the superheat decay to zero. Although the latent energy constitutes the largest contributor to the total extracted energy, the sensible energy components can make a significant contribution, especially at large tube wall subcoolings, large initial liquid superheating and short freezing time.

  • Atmospheric spray characteristics were experimentally compared between liquid-gas and liquid-liquid sprays of a pintle injector. In order to study spray characteristics, water and air were used as the simulants and the visualization technic was adopted. Spray images were acquired by using a backlight method by a high-resolution CMOS camera. As a result, when the pintle opening distance increased, liquid sheets became unstabled and fluttering droplets increased. In the liquid-gas case, the breakup performance increased as the pressure of gas injected from the annular orifice increased. In the liquid-liquid case, atomization efficiency decreased as the pressure of liquid injected from the annular orifice increased. Spray angles presented a similar trend between two cases. At the same momentum ratio, the spray angle of liquid-liquid case was lower than the angle of liquid-gas case.

  • Liquid desiccant cooling technology can supply cooling by using waste heat and solar heat which are hard to use effectively. For compact and efficient design of a dehumidifier, it is important to sustain sufficient heat and mass transfer surface area for water vapor diffusion from air to liquid desiccant on heat exchanger. In this study, the plate type heat exchanger is adopted which has extended surface, and hydrophilic coating and porous layer coating are adopted to enhance surface wettedness. PP(polypropylene) plate is coated by porous layer and PET(polyethylene terephthalate) non-woven fabric is coated by hydrophilic polymer. These coated surfaces have porous structure, so that falling liquid film spreads widely on the coated surface foaming thin liquid film by capillary force. The temperature of liquid desiccant increases during dehumidification process by latent heat absorption, which leads to loss of dehumidification capacity. Liquid desiccant is cooled by cooling water flowing in plate heat exchanger. On the plate side, the liquid desiccant can be cooled by internal cooling. However the liquid desiccant on extended surface should be moved and cooled at heat exchanger surface. Optimal mixing and distribution of liquid desiccant between extended surface and plate heat exchanger surface is essential design parameter. The experiment has been conducted to verify effective surface treatment and distribution characteristics by measuring wall side flow rate and visualization test. It is observed that hydrophilic and porous layer coating have excellent wettedness, and the distribution can be regulated by adopting holes on extended surface.

  • An experimental investigation has been peformed to examine the effects of various geometrical parameters and an initial operating condition on the air-water countercurrent How limitation (CCFL) in a simulated PWR hot leg. A total of 118 experimental data for the onset of CCFL and zero liquid penetration were obtained for various combinations of test parameters. It was observe that the CCFL can be classified into three different categories: (the onset of CCFL, (the partial liquid delivery, and (r) the zero liquid penetration. The observed mechanisms of the onset of CCFL were different depending on the inlet water flow rate. The parametric effects of pipe diameter, horizontal pipe length, horizontal pipe length-to-diameter (L/D) ratio, and initial water level in the horizontal pipe of the test section on the onset of air-water CCFL were also examined. An empirical correlation for the onset of CCFL in a horizontal pipe connected to an inclined riser was developed in terms of Wallis flooding parameters for the low inlet water flow rate region. Comparisons of the present empirical correlation with the air-water CCFL data of large pipe diameters show that the present correlation agrees more closely with the experimental data than the existing CCFL correlations.

  • Thermal barrier efficiency and endurance of coatings in liquid rocket engine combustor were evaluated for air plasma spray coating and electro/electroless plating. The result of firing tests has revealed occasional occurrence of local delamination of $ZrO_2$, NiCrAlY coating obtained by the method of air plasma spray in the region of supersonic flow and it necessitated a new coating method as a substitution. It was found that Ni-Cr coating by means of electro/electroless plating can substitute $ZrO_2$, NiCrAlY coatings of air plasma spray in terms of thermal barrier efficiency and endurance.

  • As an initial step to develop a liquid hydrogen pump of piston type operated under cryogenic and high pressure, leakage and piston head shape for the piston pump were discussed with temperature and pressure. As the results, the leakage depended on correlation among density, viscosity, clearance area by the low temperature. In order to reduce the leakage, it was found that the air-tightness can be improved by minimizing contact surface between piston and cylinder, and also increasing pressure in-cylinder can reduce piston clearance. Among the proposed piston shapes, D type piston shape had the most air-tightness. D type piston had smaller contact surface than other piston shape and easier expansion of cup shape by pressure. The leakage of D type piston shape was found about 7%, compared with A type piston shape. But it was required that analyze about vapor lock by friction and wear resistance.

  • This paper presents the optimization process of liquid desiccant cooling system using LiCl aqueous solution as a working fluid. Operating conditions(mass flow rate, conditioner outlet concentration, difference concentration) and design factors for heat exchangers(difference temperature of the district heating water, leaving temperature difference of the conditioner, leaving temperature difference of the regenerator, air temperature difference of the conditioner, air temperature difference of the regenerator) were optimized by response surface method. As a result, we obtained the 7.297 kW of cooling capacity and 0.788 of COP at optimized condition. Effect of difference temperature of hot water on system performances was also examined. As difference temperature of the district heating water increases, the cooling capacity increases and COP decreases.

  • Generally, the phase of the refrigerants that circulate in air-conditioning systems is repeatedly changed from liquid to gas and from gas to liquid. In vapor-compression refrigeration, the refrigerant at the inlet of the evaporator is in a gas-liquid two-phase state; therefore, to enhance the heat-transfer performance of the evaporator, the even distribution of the refrigerant across multiple passages of the evaporator is essential. Unlike the distribution of a single-phase refrigerant, multi-phase distribution requires further considerations. It is known that the multi-phase distribution at the outlet of the distributor is affected by factors such as the operating condition, the distributor's shape, and the insertion depth of the outlet pipes; here, the insertion depth of the outlet pipes is especially significant. In this study, for a cylindrical distributor with a 90-degree bend entrance and three outlet pipes, the flow uniformity at the outlet pipes was numerically tested in relation to variations of the insertion depth of the outlet pipes.

  • In this paper, recent research trend on heat transfer in impinging jet is reviewed. We focused on submerged jet that air issued into air or liquid issued into liquid. To control and enhance the heat transfer in single jet, researchers have performed a lot of experiments by considering the nozzle geometry, impinging surface and active method such as jet vibration, secondary injection and suction flow. The studies on multiple jet have been mainly focused on finding out the optimum condition and on investigating many different factors concerned with application condition (crossflow, rotation and geometry etc.) and combined techniques (rib turbulator, pin fin, dimple and effusion hole etc.). All most experiments showed the detailed heat transfer data by using liquid crystal method, infrared camera technique and naphthalene sublimation method. Many numerical calculations have been performed to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics in laminar jet region. Various turbulence models such as $k-\varepsilon-\bar{\nu^2}$, modified $k-\varepsilon-f_{\mu}$ were applied to the calculation for turbulent jet and the predicted results showed a good agreement with the experimental data. Although a lot of studies on impinging jet have performed consistently up to recently, further studies are still required to understand the flow and heat transfer characteristics more accurately, and to give a guideline for optimum impinging jet design in various applications.
