Thermal and structural finite element analyses were performed for the turbopump turbine bladed disk model with shroud of a liquid rocket engine. The only 1/80 part model was analyzed which consists of 3D eight node isoparametric solid elements. The applied loading history consists of a startup condition with a thermal spike and a steady state. Heat transfer coefficient on the blade was predicted using the commercial Navier-Stokes solver, Fluent. Transient thermal responses during startup and steady states were calculated using a 3D finite element code developed. Maximum stress and shroud tip displacement under the influence of centrifugal and thermal loading were also determined.
In the existing method for analyzing the liquid tightness of the outer concrete tank in an emergency LNG spillage, the temperature variation over time inside the tank, and the concrete properties dependent on temperature and internal moisture content, have not been taken into account. In this study, the analyses for a typical LNG concrete tank subjected to thermal load due to spillage were performed with three different cases: the existing method was adopted in the first case, the transient temperature variation was considered in the second, and the temperature-moisture content dependent concrete properties were taken into account as well as the transient states of temperature in the third. The analysis results for deformation, compressive zone size, cracking, and stress of reinforcements were compared, and a discussion on the difference between the results obtained from the different analysis cases was made.
It is derived for the temperature profile in a cylindrical and planar shape capillary pumped loop evaporators subject to a uniform heat flux prior to the initiation of boiling using the finite difference method. The results of the analysis allow for the determination of applied power levels for which nucleation is likely to occur only within the vapor grooves of the evaporator while maintaining subcooling in the liquid core, thereby increasing the likelihood of a successful startup. Also, limits are found for which additional increases in the applied heat flux do not increase the temperature difference between the vapor grooves and the wick-liquid core interface. Several advantages of larger diameter evaporators observed experimentally in startup are explained and quantified by the model. This analysis is appropriate for standard capillary pumped loop evaporators during a fully-flooded startup as well as starter pump designs and loop heat pipes.

The detailed heat transfer coefficient on a rotating dimpled channel were measured using the transient liquid crystal technique. The channel height to dimple diameter was 2, dimple center distance to dimple diameter was 1.5 and channel aspect ratio was 4. Tested Reynolds number based on the channel hydraulic diameter was varied from 15000 to 35000 and corresponding rotation number was ranged from 0.026 to 0.057. Results showed that the Coriolis force by rotation enhanced the heat transfer coefficient on the trailing surface. As the Reynolds number increased, i.e. rotation number decreased, the heat transfer coefficient increased and the thermal performance factor decreased.
As it takes very long time for the Transient Liquid Phase(TLP) bonding, we tried to reduce the bonding time by changing insert material for the high diffusivity element. On this study boron powder was doped as a insert material on the bonding surface of Rene 80 superalloy, and diffusion treated at 1150.deg.C under vacuum. On this method differently from the TLP bonding the insert material was not melted during bonding but only the base metal reacted with the boron was inducedly melted. Therefore, as this bonding mechanism is different from the existing ones, it is suggested as a Melting Induced Diffusion Bonding. When this process was used for the diffusion bonding, the bonding time including homogenization decreased greatly compared to the conventional TLP bonding.

The detailed heat transfer coefficients on a rotating dimpled channel were measured by the hue detection based the transient liquid crystal technique. The dimples were fabricated on the one side of the channel and the tested channel aspect ratio was 4, 6, and 12 with fixed channel width. Tested Reynolds number based on the channel hydraulic diameter was varied from 21,000 to 47,000. A stationary case and two different rotating conditions were tested so that the dimple fabricated surface became leading or trailing surface. For all rotating conditions, the minimum averaged heat transfer coefficient was measured for the channel aspect ratio of 6. Generally, the highest averaged heat transfer coefficient was observed for the highest aspect ratio cases due to increased dimple induced vortex strength.

A three-dimensional (3D) unstructured hydrodynamic solver for transient two-phase flows has been developed. A two-fluid three-field model was adopted for the two-phase flows. The three fields represent a continuous liquid, an entrained liquid, and a vapour field. The hydrodynamic solver is for the 3D component of a nuclear system code and the component-scale analysis tools for transient two-phase flows. The finite volume method and unstructured grid are adopted, which are useful for the flows in a complicated geometry. The semi-implicit ICE (Implicit Continuous-fluid Eulerian) numerical scheme has been adapted to the unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the numerical method and the preliminary results of the calculations. The results show that the numerical scheme is robust and predicts the phase change and the flow transitions due to boiling and flashing problems well.
In the present study, a numerical simulations are investigated in a stirred solid/liquid system by using Eulerian multi-phase model. The transient flow field of liquid phase and distribution of solid particles are predicted in stirred tanks consisting of 4-pitched paddles impeller and baffles. The effects of number and width of baffles on the mixing time and the quality of solid suspension in a stirred tank are presented numerically. The result shows that the mixing time decreases as the width and number of baffles increase.

Detailed heat transfer coefficient distributions an two. types of gas turbine blade tip, plane tip and squealer tip, were measured using a hue-detection base transient liquid crystals technique.. The heat transfer coefficients an the shroud and near tip regions of the pressure and suction sides af the blade were also. measured. The heat transfer measurements were taken at the three different tip gap clearances af 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.5% of blade span. Results shaw the overall heat transfer coefficients on the tip and shroud with squealer tip blade were lower than those with plane tip blade. By using squealer tip, however, the reductions af heat transfer coefficients near the tip regions of the pressure and suction sides were nat remarkable.
This study investigates the problem of phase change from liquid to solid in the inviscid stagnation flow. The instantaneous location of the solid-liquid interface is fixed for all times by a coordinate transformation. Finite difference method is used to obtain the solution of the unsteady problem, and the growth rate of solid and the transient heat transfer from the surfaces of solid are investigated. The transient solution is dependent on the three dimensionless parameters, but the final steady state is determined by only one parameter of temperature ratio/conductivity ratio. It is observed that the instantaneous heat flux at the surface of solid can be obtained with sufficient accuracy by measuring the thickness of the solid or vice versa.
