  • The present study presents experimental results of combustion tests of a fuel-rich gas generator associated with a turbopump. Five combustion tests had been successfully executed. Static pressures of the gas generator promptly reacted to propellant supply variations from the turbopump. A closed-loop test for driving the turbopump revealed no flaw. Exit gas temperature results are very similar to previous ones. An orifice was effective on the suppression of pressure fluctuations although tests conducted below 45 bar showed the same dynamic behaviour as that of component-only tests.

  • The stress analyses of the 'U'-shaped multi-ply reinforced gimbal bellows under high pressure and rotational displacement loadings are performed at the room and cryogenic temperatures. The bellows are used for the Lox pipe line which connects the combustion chamber with the turbopump of a liquid rocket engine. The distributions of the stress, the strains and the contact pressures are obtained from the finite element analysis considering the geometric non-linearities of the contacts between the plies and the material one of the isotropic plasticity. Those are compared with the stress results from EJMA (Expansion Joint Manufacturing Association) standard. Also, the effects of the operating temperature and the reinforcing ring on the stresses are investigated.

  • Turbopump, which is a part of 75 ton open cycle liquid rocket engine has a super sonic impulse turbine. This paper investigated the leading edge thickness effect on the turbine performance experimently. Two rotors were tested with the different leading edge thickness. The ratios (rotor thickness to Pitch) are 1.9 and 1.4 times to 30 ton turbine rotor. As a result, a rotor with 1.4 times ratio had a 1.5% higher efficiency gain than a rotor with 1.9 times ratio. The pressure ratio with the maximum efficiency on the same rotational speed was increased to the full expansion ratio of nozzle.

  • It was investigated that effect of the supersonic impulse turbine rotor leading edge thickness which was the part of 75 ton open cycle liquid rocket engine turbopump. The test for turbine was performed that the rotor thickness to pitch ratio was 1.9 and 1.4 to 30 ton turbine. As a result of test, the rotor with lower thickness(1.4) had 1.5% efficiency gain to the higher thickness(1.9) and the pressure ratio with maximum efficiency was increased to the nozzle full expansion point.

  • The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 101on1 in thrust with RP-1/LOx combination. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching in turbopump system. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. The configuration of the gas generator and the condition for performance which can maximize the objective function were determined and found to meet the design constraints. Also, the combustion analysis was conducted to evaluate the performance of designed chamber and injector of gas generator. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.

  • For a short time a pyre-starter should turn the blades of a turbine to the adequate rotational speed by a single operation. Through this process the pressures of the components of a propellant rise rapidly up to the operating point, and the components enter into a gas-generator. Combustion in the gas-generator occurs to keep the turbopumps working. In this research characteristic parameters of a pyre-starter which correspond to the required performance of the turbopump before the gas-generator starts to work were selected

  • The present study focuses on the flow analysis of a turbo pump inducer by performing both numerical and experimental methods. The head rise, efficiency and detailed flow fields such as outlet flow angles, pressure and velocity vectors are measured and compared with the computational data. Generally a good agreement is obtained between numerical and experimental results. However, some discrepancies are observed due to complex flow structures inside the inducer. Future calculations with an advanced turbulence model and a dense computational grid needs to be performed to obtain accurate numerical solution for the detailed flow fields.

  • A velocity-compounded(VC) turbine for the 75ton turbopump was developed as an improved performance backup for the single-rotor baseline turbine. Curvic coupling was adopted for the power transmission between the rotors and shaft. High temperature torsion test and spin test was performed for the curvic coupling design validation. Aerodynamic performance test revealed that VC turbine can generate 20.5% higher specific power than the baseline turbine.

  • There are two definite objects for developing the startup transient of liquid rocket engine. One is to achieve the repeatability of startup to ensure higher reliability, and the other is to reduce the time of the startup transient. Typically in the initial phase of engine development as we are currently opposing, it is hard to estimate engine startup time due to the lack of experiences. In this work, a startup transient analysis tool was developed with the introduction of the mathematical model for each component of pump-fed liquid rocket engine system. Startup transient was investigated for a 25 ton class gas generator cycle engine to find necessary time for reaching steady state from startup and this enabled to reveal dynamic characteristics of the engine.
