  • In order to build a conceptual design program for a liquid rocket engine system, performance based sub-programs for each core component of the engine system were made. Parts included were the combustion chamber, supersonic nozzle, centrifugal pump, and impulsive turbine. Simple mathematical models based on classical thermodynamic and inviscid theories were adopted with proper tuning by empirical data. In Part I, aiming to validate each sub-program, we examined the results of each program qualitatively, and parametrically investigated the sensitivity due to the change in design parameters.

  • Both numerical analysis and experiment of cold and hot tests were performed to obtain basic design data for the swirl coaxial type Injector and to predict the combustion performance. Mass distribution, mixing distribution, mixing efficiency, characteristic velocity efficiency were measured by the cold tests and numerical analysis using the commercial thermo-hydraulic program. Test and analysis variables were recess, pressure drop, velocity ratio, mixing spray, mixture ratio. Hot tests were performed for the Uni-element injector to compare the performance with the cold test results, and, hot tests for Multi-element injector were performed to compare the performance with Uni-element injector. Designed thrust of the Uni-element injector liquid rocket was 35kgf at sea level and combustion chamber pressure, 20bar. Kerosene and Lox were used as a propellant.

  • A preburner for the staged combustion in the high performance liquid rocket engine is being developed and strength experiments and finite element analyses on specimens, which simulate the brazing joint of the preburner, were performed and the results were compared. One specimen simulate the joints near oxygen injectors of head by the funance brazing and two specimens the joints of the combustion chamber cooling channel by vacuum brazing. The experiments were burst ones with strain gauges.

  • The sequence of the propellant supply is very important for the reliable and safe operation of a LRE combustion test. So combustion performance tests were performed to find an optimum test sequence by changing supply time of propellants and purge gas in the moment of ignition and extinction. The liquid rocket engine consisted of a catalytic ignitor and six swirl-coaxial injectors which used hydrogen peroxide and kerosene. Conclusively, an optimum sequence was found for stable combustion in the moment of ignition and extinction.

  • MOV(Main Oxidizer shut-off Valves) control the combustion of launch vehicle systems by the supply and the isolation of liquid oxygen to a main combustion chamber in launch vehicle systems. Moreover, the MOV should secure a constant flow rate of liquid oxygen for combustion instability in the steady operational state. To modify the middle flange and rip of inlet valve design by Computer Aided Structural Analysis for improvement of EM core functions. In result, it has been verified to improve performance of EM by tests.

  • This paper describes the general design procedure of cooling system for liquid rocket engine(LRE). From this design logic, cooling channels are designed and fabricated. The measured heat flux from firing test is similar to the heat flux predicted by design logic. Therefore, the proposed design procedure of cooling channel can be applied to real LRE system. Also the result of firing test indicates that combustion pressure and mixture ratio have an influence on the heat flux to be produced in combustion chamber.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of film cooling in the lab-scale liquid rocket engine using liquid oxygen(LOx) and Jet A-1(Jet engine fuel) as propellants. Film coolants(Jet A-1 and water) was injected through the film cooling injector. The outside wall temperature of the combustor and film cooled length were determined for chamber pressure, mixture ratio, and the different geometries(injection angle) with the percent film coolant flow rate. The loss of characteristic velocity was determined for the case of film cooling with water and Jet A-1. As chamber pressure increased, the outside wall temperature increased in the nozzle but unchanged over the 9 percent film coolant flow rate for the combustion chamber used in this study. Characteristic velocity wasn't affected with the mixture ratio over the 9 percent film coolant flow rate.

  • A numerical simulation is attempted for the regenerative cooling heat transfer processes of the liquid propellant rocket engine. The heat transfer from the combustion gases to the thrust chamber wall is called gas side heat transfer. This heat is conducted radially to the coolant through the carbon deposit and metallic wall of thrust chamber Finally, this heat is convected away by the coolant flowing along the passages in the thrust chamber. The equivalence of these three heat fluxes of the above processes is utilized to determine the coolant side wall temperature, gas side wall temperature and the heat flux. When the number and shape(width, height) of coolant passages, the shape(size) of thrust chamber, oxidant and fuel properties, coolant properties, oxidant/fuel mixture ratio, coolant inlet temperature, the thickness of carbon deposit formed along the thrust chamber wall during combustion are given, reasonable radial direction temperature distributions and heat fluxes along the thrust chamber axis are obtained.

  • Hybrid rocket had many advantage with compared to solid and liquid rockets. In this study, lab-scale hybrid motor was designed and manufactured. And the methods of regression rate improvement were considered. Thrust was calculated with pressure of the combustion chamber and the regression rate was measured in low flow rate of oxidizer. Several problems and solutions of operating hybrid rocket was presented.

  • A 30-tonf-class fullscale thrust chamber for the application to a Low-Earth-Orbit Space Launch Vehicle has been combustion tested over the wide ranges of a mixture ratio and a chamber pressure. The thrust chamber designed for a pump-fed open cycle engine was tested with an ablative chamber instead of a regenerative one for the initial evaluation of its performance and function. The test results revealed stable combustion characteristics. The hardware survived the harsh environment and showed very sound functional characteristics. The measured combustion efficiency turned out to be 95% and a specific impulse at sea level was estimated as 254sec, which are comparable to or above the predetermined design values.
