  • In the case of appling a unielement injector developed for a full scale liquid rocket combustor, a operating condition or configuration of the injector is changed by combustion pressure, arrangement and injector quantity of a full scale liquid rocket combustor. In order to verify application, swirl coaxial injectors propelled by jet-A1 and liquid oxygen are tested at different conditions of a combustion pressure, a flowrate and an injector length. As a test result, the application of the present swirl coaxial injectors is excellent because an efficiency of a characteristic velocity is increased at the each test condition beyond that variation of dynamic pressure intensity is small.

  • Hydrazine which has been used as monopropellant shows high performance, but because of its high toxicity research for new green propellant that could replace hydrazine is going on. Ionic liquid propellant that is one of the green propellant has lower toxicity, higher specific impulse, and higher density than hydrazine. To design the thruster which use Hydroxylamine Nitrate (HAN), one of ionic liquid propellant, as a propellant, a quantity of catalyst for full decomposition of a propellant is needed. In this study, reference point for HAN thruster design could be suggested through a design of a small scale thruster which used HAN propellant, and propellant decomposition capability evaluation with characteristic velocity efficiency.

  • Two-dimemsional liquid-solid multiphase fluid dynamics was used to analyze the suspension and mix of liquid fuel and solid particles in fuel tank installed mixing impeller. In this paper, the multiphase flow was modeled using Eulerian Grandular Multiphase model. Experimental measurements of the axial distribution of solids concentration in stirred tanks under 12vol% solid loading were used for comparison with the CFD simulation. Four cases for the impeller location and flow pumping direction also were reviewed under 10.5% solids loading and 700rpm in fuel mix tank. The result of quality of suspension was compared with each cases and the impeller location and operation of mixing fuel tank was established.

  • A computational analysis of nozzle flow characteristics and plume structure using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model was conducted to examine performance of the supersonic nozzle employed in a small liquid-rocket engine for ground firing test. Computed results and experimental outcome of 2-D converging-diverging nozzle flow were compared for verifying the computational capability as well as the turbulence model validity. Numerical computations of 2-D axisymmetric nozzle flow was carried out with the selected model. As a result, flow separation with backflow appeared around the nozzle exit. This investigation was reported as a background data for the optimal nozzle design of small liquid-propellant rocket engine for ground test.

  • The development of a turbopump is fundamental to have an independent LRE(liquid rocket engine) for KSLV-II. Recently, the detail design of a turbopump real-propellant test facility based on liquid oxygen and kerosene has been performed to structure the test facility for the experimental validation of the turbopump. In this paper, the design requirements of the turbopump and the specifications of the test facility was presented and the representative sub-facilities were explained on the basis of the design results. Also, the uncertainty of the sub-facilities which could be appeared during the operation was removed in advance through the simulation method and the experimental verification.

  • An analytical study was carried out to evaluate the regenerative cooling characteristics in the liquid rocket engine of a 10tf-thrust level using kerosene as a fuel. As a supplementary cooling method, a radiative cooling was applied to the nozzle extension. It was found out from this work that the cooling system with the regenerative and radiation cooling only is not adaptable as a cooling method for the liquid rocket engine of a 10tf-thrust level using kerosene as a fuel for the 2nd stage of the space launch vehicle. So, additional cooling method, curtain cooling was introduced and analyzed. Curtain cooling was very effective to reduce the thermal and thermo-structural instability.

  • A Liquid Rocket Engine(LRE) ground firing test facility was built in Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) in 2001 to develop the LRE for the first Korean liquid rocket, KSR-III. Around 170 tests were conducted since its establishment until recently by September 2006, and in the meantime, a considerable improvements were made in the capability. This paper describes the outline, conducted tests and operation techniques which have been accumulated through the operation of KARI LRE ground firing test facility.

  • For understanding of high performance liquid rocket engine operating at high pressure, dynamic characteristics of liquid oxygen in a swirl injector operating at supercritical conditions has been numerically investigated. Turbulent numerical model is based on large eddy simulation and contains full conservation laws including Soave modification of Redlich-Kwong equation of state and Chung's model. Preconditioning method is applied to get an effective convergence rate. Numerical analysis results are compared with the one that ideal equation of state applied to. Differences of thermodynamic properties and mixing dynamics are investigated at liquid phase area inside injector and combustion chamber.

  • The paper presents the results of the experimental study about flow discharge characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors for a liquid rocket engine. Flow discharge characteristics of injectors become one of critical design issues for LRE combustion devices. Tap water and liquid oxygen/kerosene were used for ambient and hot firing tests, respectively. A combustion discharge coefficient varies depending on a mixture ratio and a recess ratio, and magnitudes of the variations are different with respect to injector shapes and operating conditions. The variation of a combustion discharge coefficient with a LOx injector is considered to result from flame structure changes due to physical property changes.

  • A basic design for a Technical Development Model (TDM) of liquid oxygen lines from the turbopump exit to the oxidizer valves of the combustion chamber and the gas generator was conducted to develop a turbopump-fed liquid rocket engine. The TDM is composed of straight lines, elbows, bellows, a branch, an orifice, flanges and a heat insulator. Materials were determined by consideration of operation conditions, weight constraint and manufacturing procedures. The size and the location of each component were determined by flow analysis of the required flowrate and the pressure loss. Basic designs of the components were conducted by consideration of the operating temperature and the maximum expectation operating pressure. The safety factors were evaluated by structural analysis of design of each component.
