For future multi-core processors, 3D integration is regarded as one of the most promising techniques since it improves performance and reduces power consumption by decreasing global wire length. However, 3D integration causes serious thermal problems since the closer proximity of heat generating dies makes existing thermal hotspots more severe. Conventional air cooling schemes are not enough for 3D multi-core processors due to the limit of the heat dissipation capability. Without more efficient cooling methods such as liquid cooling, the performance of 3D multi-core processors should be degraded by dynamic thermal management. In this paper, we examine the architectural impact of cooling methods on the 3D multi-core processor to find potential benefits of liquid cooling. We first investigate the thermal behavior and compare the performance of two different cooling schemes. We also evaluate the leakage power consumption and lifetime reliability depending on the temperature in the 3D multi-core processor.

Nickel wires of 0.8 mm in diameter and 80 mm in length were electrically exploded in liquid media such as water, ethyl alcohol. The distribution of particle sizes was broad from a few micrometers to tens of nanometer. It was identified that the particles could be classified according to its sizes by using centrifugal separator. The powder prepared in distilled water showed mainly pure metallic Ni phase although a little oxide phase was observed. The powders prepared in ethyl alcohol showed complicated unknown phases, which is attributed to the compound of carbon in the organic liquid. This unknown phase was turned to pure metallic Ni phase after heat treatment.

In the case of appling a unielement injector developed for a full scale liquid rocket combustor, a operating condition or configuration of the injector is changed by combustion pressure, arrangement and injector quantity of a full scale liquid rocket combustor. In order to verify application, swirl coaxial injectors propelled by jet-A1 and liquid oxygen are tested at different conditions of a combustion pressure, a flowrate and an injector length. As a test result, the application of the present swirl coaxial injectors is excellent because an efficiency of a characteristic velocity is increased at the each test condition beyond that variation of dynamic pressure intensity is small.
As an effective separation method for biomolecules, aqueous two-phase systems based on ionic liquids were suggested. Hydrophobic ionic liquids are more expensive and viscous in spite of their usage in the ionic liquid/water biphasic extraction compared with hydrophilic ionic liquids. In case of aqueous two-phase systems using hydrophilic ionic liquids, they can be diluted in aqueous phase. Experimental results show that aqueous two phase systems can be formed by adding appropriate amount of ionic liquids to aqueous salts solutions. The viscosity of ionic liquid aqueous phase is proportional to the cation chain length in ionic liquids. It is founded that the ionic liquid based aqueous two phase systems are effective for the separation of biomolecules such as acrylic acid.

It is well known that drag reduction in single phase liquid flow is affected by polymer material, molecular weight, polymer concentration, pipe diameter, and flow velocity. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research of drag reduction in two phase flow is not sufficient. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, void fraction, mean liquid velocity, and turbulent intensity whether polymer is added in the horizontal two phase system or not. Experiment has been conducted in a test section with the inner diameter of 24mm and the length of 1,500mm. The polymer materials used are two kinds of polyacrylamide[PAAM] and co-polymer[A611P]. The polymer concentration was varied with 50, 100 and 200 ppm under the same experimental conditions. Experimental results showed that the drag reduction of co-polymer is higher than that of polyacrylamide. Mean liquid velocities increased as polymer was added, and turbulent intensity decreased inversely near the pipe wall.

A mathematical model is presented to predict the two-phase flow and heat transfer phenomena of the evaporating extended meniscus region in a micro-channel. The pressure difference at the liquid-vapor interface can be obtained by the augmented Laplace-Young equation. The correlative equations for film thickness, pressure, and velocity in the meniscus region are derived by applying the mass, momentum, and energy equations into the control volume. The results show that increasing the heat flux and the liquid inlet velocity cause the length and liquid film thickness of the extended meniscus region to decrease. The variation, however, of the heat flux and liquid inlet velocity has no effect on the profile of film thickness. The majority of heat is transferred through the thin film region that is a very small region in the extended meniscus region. It is also found that the vapor velocity increases gradually in the meniscus region. However, it increases sharply at the junction of the meniscus and thin film regions.

Boiling heat transfer characteristics of liquid nitrogen in a stainless steel plain tube and wire coil inserted tubes were investigated. The test tubes, which had an inner diameter of 10.6 m and a length of 1.65 m, were horizontally located. Five wire coils having different pitch and thickness were inserted into the plain tube. The pitches of the wire coils were 18.4, 27.6, and 36.8 m, and the thickness was 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm respectively. Tests were conducted at a saturation temperature of $-191^{\circ}$, mass fluxes from 58 to 105 kg/$m^2s$, and heat fluxes from 22.5 to 32.7 kw/$m^2$. A direct heating method was used to apply heat to the test section. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of liquid nitrogen were represented as a function of vapor quality, which showed significant drop at the dryout vapor quality. The maximum heat transfer enhancement using the wire coil inserted tubes over the plain tube was $174\%$ for 'Wire 3' having a thickness of 2.5 mm and a pitch of 18.4 mm.

The characteristic of air-assist spray injected into subsonic crossflow were studied experimentally. External-mixing air assist injector of Orifice nozzle with L/d of 3 were tested with various air-liquid ratio. Shadowgraph photography was performed for spray visualization and trajectory of spray measurements. The detailed spray structure was characterized in terms of SMD, velocity, and volume flux, using PDPA. Experimental results indicate that penetration length was increased and spray distribution was accelerated by increasing air-liquid ratio.

A series of new liquid crystalline dimesogenic compounds with chiral tails was synthesized, and their thermal and liquid crystalline properties were studied. The chain length of the central polymethylene spacers (x) was varied from dimethylene (2) to decamethylene (12). These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and cross-polarizing microscopy. All compounds were found to be enantiotropically liquid crystalline, and the values of melting ($T_m$) and isotropization temperature ($T_i$) as well as enthalpy change (Δ$H_i$) and entropy change for isotropization (Δ$S_i$) decreased in a zig-zag fashion revealing the so-called odd-even effect as x increases. Their mesomorphic properties fall into three categories depending upon x; (a) compounds with x=2 and 4 formed two different mesophases, smectic and cholesteric phases in that order on heating, and vice versa on cooling, (b) compounds with x=3, 7, 8, 10 and 11 reversibly formed only the cholesteric phase, and (c) compounds with x=5, 6, 9 and 12 exhibited only a cholesteric phase on heating, whereas on cooling they formed two different mesophases, cholesteric and smectic phases, sequentially.

The spray characteristics and drop size measurements have been experimentally studied in liquid jets injected into subsonic crossflow. With water as fuel injection velocity, injection angle and atomizer internal flows were varied to provide of jet operation conditions. The injector internal flow was classified as three modes such as a non-cavitation flow, cavitation, and hydraulic flip flows. Pulsed Shadowgraph Photography measurement was used to determine the spatial distribution of the spray droplet diameter in a subsonic crossflow of air. And this study also obtains the SMD(Sauter Mean Diameters) distribution by using PLLIF(Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique. The objectives of this research are getting a droplet distribution and drop size measurement of each condition and compare with the other flows effect. As the result, This research have been showed the droplet size were spatially dependent on air-stream velocity, fuel injection velocity, injection angle effects and normalized distance from the injector exit length.(x/d, y/d)There are also different droplet size characteristics between cavitation, hydraulic flip and the non-cavitation flows.
