  • The liquid cathode processing is necessary to separate cadmium from the actinide elements in the pyroprocessing since the actinide deposits are dissolved or precipitated in a liquid cathode. Distillation process was employed for the cathode processing owing to the compactness. It is very important to avoid a splattering of cadmium during evaporation due to the high vapor pressure. Several methods have been proposed to lower the splattering of cadmium during distillation. A multi-layer porous round cover was proposed to avoid a cadmium splattering in our previous study. In this study, distillation behavior of $Cd-ZrO_2$ and Cd - Bi systems were investigated to examine a multi-layer porous round cover for the development of the cadmium splatter shield of distillation crucible. It was designed that the cadmium vapor can be released through the holes of the shield, whereas liquid drops can be collected in the multiple hemisphere. The cover was made with three stainless steel round plates with a diameter of 33.50 mm. The distance between the hemispheres and the diameter of the holes are 10 and 1 mm, respectively. Bismuth or zirconium oxide powder was used as a surrogate for the actinide elements. About 40 grams of Cd was distilled at a reduced pressure for two hours at various temperatures. The mixture of the cadmium and the surrogate was distilled at 470, 570 and $620^{\circ}C$ in the crucible with the cover. Most of the bismuth or zirconia remained in the crucible after distillation at 470 and $570^{\circ}C$ for two hours. It was considered that the crucible cover hindered the splattering of the liquid cadmium from the distillation crucible. A considerable amount of the surrogate material reduced after distillation at $620^{\circ}C$ due to the splattering of the liquid cadmium. The low temperature is favorable to avoid a liquid cadmium splattering during distillation. However, the optimum temperature for the cadmium distillation should be decided further, since the evaporation rate decreases with a decreasing temperature.

  • In this research we investigate geometric issues involved while using a particular rapid prototyping system, called Stereolithography(SLA). SLA create prototypes layer by layer, each layer being formed by scanning a laser beam across the x, y surface of a vat of liquid monomer mix. The performance of SLA is influenced by orientation and layer thickness of designed fabrication. The number of layer and the area needed support is influenced by the orientation and layer thickness of designed fabrication. The step influence and volume error is influenced by slice thickness. We minimize the support are, the number of layer and cusp height. These variables of fabrication is minimized using genetic algorithm. The time for genetic algorithm is as little as we can accept. So we calculate support area and cusp height simply.

  • We investigated the stability of all-trans-retinol on the liquid crystalline O/W emulsion composed of mainly alkyl polyglycerine, alkyl polyglucose and glycerine, and compared the activity of all-trans-retinol in the various forms of liquid crystal. Under certain conditions, novel liquid crystalline gel was formed around oil droplets, and layers of this liquid crystalline gel were very wide and rigid. (SWLC; Super Wide Liquid Crystal) SWLC was very helpful to stabilize retinol in O/W emulsion. After storage at 45 C for 4 weeks, all-trans-retinol in O/W emulsion composed of SWLC retained above 85% of the activity upon HPLC analysis, whereas those within no liquid crystalline emulsion gave 47% and normal liquid crystalline emulsion composed of fatty alcohols gave 40 60%. Retinol in oil phase is nealy insoluble in pure water, but in cosmetic emulsion systems can be slightly solubilized into water because emulsifiers and polyols in emulsion systems function as solubilizers. In this case, water in outer phase acts as a media for oxygen transporation$.$and thus destabilizes retinol. As a result, retinol in O/W emulsion has a tendency to become unstable. SWLC surrounding oil droplet which contains retinol is wide and rigid, therefore reduces contact between inner phase and outer phase To make SWLC, properties of emulsifiers are very important phase transition temperature should be high, and the structure of surfactants should be bulky, and their ratio should be suitable to make rigid and wide liquid crystalline gel layer in order to reduce contact between retinol in inner phase and water in outer phase.

  • This study attempted to clarify the difference in eggshell pigmentation between blue-shelled ducks (BSD) and whiteshelled ducks (WSD). The eggshell pigmentation deposition process is discussed. Ultraviolet spectro-photometer and HPLC were used to determine the biliverdin concentration in the shell gland, uterus liquid and eggshell at 6, 12, 18, 20, 23.5 h post-oviposition. The biliverdin concentration in the eggshell and uterus fluid showed significant differences between BSD and WSD, but not in the shell gland. The heme oxygenase activity in the shell gland of both kinds of ducks remained mostly constant during the ovulatory cycle with no variation. The assay of exogenous biliverdin injection into the shell gland antrum in the WSD indicated that exogenous biliverdin could be deposited continuously into the eggshell until the source was exhausted. A layer-by-layer dissolution assay was used to examine the eggshell pigment deposition process. The biliverdin concentration in the first to sixth layers of the eggshell in the BSD was significantly higher than that in the white-shelled counterpart. The blue pigment concentration increased persistently from the 6th layer to the $1^{st}$ layer. The BSD eggshells did not accumulate a large quantity of biliverdin in the most external layer. They tended to increase the deposition layer by layer. Our results demonstrated that different BSD and WSD eggshell colors were influenced by the amount of biliverdin in the uterus fluid and not determined by the amount of biliverdin in the shell gland. This implies the existence of a mechanism that controls biliverdin transportation from the shell gland into the uterus fluid, thereby playing a key role in regulating duck eggshell color.

  • Spherical phospholipid bilayers, vesicles, were formed with respect to phase of each layer via a double emulsion technique. The conversion of phosphatidylcholine (PC) to phosphatidic acid (PA) at the outer layer, caused by phospholipase D (PLD), induced a curvature change in the vesicles, which eventually led them to fuse each other. The effect of the lipid layer physical-properties on the PLD-induced vesicle fusion was investigated using the fluorescence intensity change. 8-Aminonaphthalene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid disodium salt(ANTS) and p-Xylene-bis(N-pyridinium bromide)(DPX) were encapsulated in the vesicles, respectively, for the quantification of the fusion. The fluorescence scale was calibrated with the fluorescence of a 1/1 mixture of ANTS and DPX vesicles in NaCl buffer taken as 100% fluorescence (0% fusion) and the vesicles containing both ANTS and DPX as 0% fluorescence (100% fusion), considering the leakage into the medium studied directly in a separate experiment using vesicles containing both ANTS and DPX. It was observed that the fusion occurred to the liquid-phase of the inner layer only. The fusion behaviors were very similar for both solid and liquid of the outer layer. However, the leakage was faster for the solid-phase outer-layer than the liquid-phase outer-layer. The difference in the leakage seems to be caused by the lipid concentration and the lateral diffusivity in the layer.

  • In this paper, we study the insulating properties of the liquid nitrogen(LN2) including the thermal bubbles. The shape of the thermal bubbles in accordance with the current change was observed in the 77 K and 65 K LN2. According to the temperature of liquid nitrogen, bubbles were generated differently. The round shape of the bubble is occurred in 77 K LN2. But the layer shape of bubble is occurred in 65 K LN2. When the bubbles present, the dielectric strength of liquid nitrogen is low. However, the breakdown patterns were different according to the electrode arrangement. AC breakdown voltage(BDV) was lower than the DC BDV due to the influence of bubbles. Therefore, the design of a high-voltage superconducting equipments should consider the bubbles.

  • $CO_{2}$ ocean sequestration is one of the promising options to reduce $CO_{2}$ concentration in the atmosphere because the ocean has vast capacity for $CO_{2}$ absorption. Therefore, in the present investigation, calculations for solubility and dissolution behavior of liquid $CO_{2}$ droplets released at 1000 m and 1500 m deep in the ocean from a moving ship and a fixed pipeline have been carried out in order to estimate the $CO_{2}$ dissolution characteristics in the ocean. The results show liquid $CO_{2}$ becomes bubble at around 500 m in depth, and the solubility of seawater is about $5{\%}$ less than of pure water. Also, it is shown that the injection of liquid from a moving ship is a more effective method for dissolution than from a fixed pipeline, and the presence of hydrate on liquid $CO_{2}$ acts as a resistant layer in dissolving liquid $CO_{2}$.

  • Recent progress in both low pretilt and high pretilt defect free C1 surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) devices is reviewed. First, by numerical calculation to investigate the balance between surface azimuthal anchoring energy and bulk elastic energy within the confined chevron layer geometry of C1 and C2, it is possible to achieve a zigzag free C1 state by low azimuthal anchoring alignment with a low pretilt angle. The critical azimuthal anchoring coefficient for defect free C1 state is calculated. Its relationship with elastic constant, chevron angle as well as surface topography effect are also discussed. Second, using $5^{\circ}$ oblique SiO deposition alignment method a defect free, large memory angle, high contrast ratio and bistable C1 SSFLC display, which has potential for electronic paper applications has also been developed. The electrooptical properties and bistability of this device have been investigated. Various aspects of defect control are also discussed.

  • Transfer molding methods have a problem that weak adhesion between nanostructures and substrates. It is important to make various nano scale applications, also the stability of nanostructure on substrate is related with device performance. We studied an effect of poly 4-vinylphenol (PVP) as the polymeric adhesion layer between organic nanowires and a Si substrate when the nanowires are transferred by liquid-bridge-mediated nanotransfer molding method (LB-nTM). Their structural stability was examined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy as multiple transfer molding and washing process. Field-effect transistors were fabricated with organic semiconductor nanowires on a polymeric adhesion layer and their electrical properties showed no significant difference as the one without the adhesion layer. As a result, adhesion layer can be used in the washing process and making multi-layer nano-scale patterns.

  • These experiments are close examination of spray characteristics that are continuous liquid jet and modulated liquid jet. The experiments were conducted using water, over a range of crossflow velocities from $42{\sim}l36\;m/s$, with modulation frequencies of $35.7{\sim}166.2\;Hz$. Between continuous crossflow jet and modulated cross-flow jet of penetration, breakup point, spray angle and macro spray shape are experimentally investigated with image analysis. In cross-flow field, main parameter of liquid jet for breakup was cross-flow stream rather than modulation effect. As oscillation of the periodic pressure that could make liquid jet moved up and down, the mixing efficiency was increased. Also, a bulk of liquid jet puff was detected at upper field of liquid surface. So, this phenomenon has a good advantage of mixing spray from concentration of center area to outer area. Because of modulation frequency, SMD inclination of the structured layer was evanescent. Cross-sectional characteristics of SMD at downstream area were non-structured distributions. Then cross-sectional characteristics of SMD size were about same tendency over a range that is effect of spray mixing. The tendency of volume flux value for various modulation frequency was same distribution. And volume flux was decreased when the modulation frequency increase.
