  • Polarized ultraviolet irradiation techniques have been developed recently to produce alignment of liquid crystals (LC). Because of the excellent thermal stability and the alignment ablility of polyimides, polyimides has attracted considerable research interest for the photoinduced alignment layer. Hasegawa and Taira confirmed homogeneous alignment of LC by the decompostion of a polyimide induced by lineraly ultra-violet polarized light. It was reported that ultraviolet visible absorption spectra of a polyimide alignment film showed a remarkable change upon irradiation. In this study, we synthesized phthalic polyimide and a naphthalenic polyimide in order to investigate the effect of the polyimide structure. Some difference in terms of the photo-induced molecular orientaion of liquid crystals were observed with the polyimide structure.

  • Recently, study on the weak interaction energy between the soft polymer surface and liquid crystals has been a primary topic for new LC device applications. In this paper, to understand the switching property of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) at the interface with a weak anchoring boundary, we investigate experimentally the rotation property of surface nematic director by electric field on non-treated Poly-Methylmethacrylate (PMMA, $T_g=110^{\circ}C$, Sigma Aldrich) film observed under various temperatures including the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the polymer layer.

  • In this review, several aspects for improving the quality of materials parameters of Nematic Liquid Crystals (NLCs) and Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals (FLCs) will be discussed. In particular the decrease of the response time is a need. It will be demonstrated that the materials parameters of NLCs and FLCs can be improved among other ways due to optimization of chemical structures of the NLCs and /or FLCs mixtures, due to doping them with nanomaterials and by using fast elastic relaxation processes.

  • We propose a two-step UV irradiation procedure to fabricate polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films by lamination. During the first UV treatment, before lamination, the UV-curable monomers coated on one film substrate are solidified through photo-polymerization as the phase separation between the liquid crystals and the monomers. Introducing an adhesion-enhancement layer on the other plastic substrate and controlling the UV irradiation conditions ensure that UV-induced cross-linkable functional groups remain on the surfaces of the photo-polymerized layers. Thereby, the adhesion stability between the top and bottom films is much improved during a second (post-lamination) UV treatment by further UV-induced cross-linking at the interface. Because the adhesion-enhancement and PDLC layers prepared by the bar-coating process are solidified before lamination, the PDLC droplet distribution and the cell gap between the two plastic substrates remain uniform under the lamination pressure. This ensures that the voltage-controlled light transmittance is uniform across the entire sample.

  • The induction mechanisms of planar arrangements in cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) which showed selective reflections of visible light were investigated by measuring the selective reflectivity and FTIR peak intensity of $C{\equiv}N$ stretching band. Although the planar arrangement of CLC was not as perfectly induced as the cases prepared with using alignment layers, it could be also induced by stretching polymer substrate or by applying shear forces. The planar arrangements were induced by forming CLC helical structures on top of liquid crystal molecules which were in contact with the substrate and oriented all in the same direction.

  • We demonstrate that the finite rate of dielectric relaxation in liquid crystals which has been ignored previously causes profound effects in the fast dielectric reorientation of the director. The phenomenon is relevant for submillisecond switching of the director when the switching rate approaches the rate of dielectric relaxation through the reorientation of the molecular dipoles. A submillisecond switching ($15-400\;{\mu}s$ for an optical retardation shift $0.3-2.2\;{\mu}m$ in $10-15\;{\mu}m$ thick cells) is demonstrated for dual frequency nematic cells with high pretilt that maximizes the dielectric torque acting on the director. We propose the theory of dielectric response in which the electric displacement depends not only on the present (as in the standard theory) but also on the past values of electric field and director. We design an experiment in which the standard "instantaneous" model and our model predict effects of opposite signs; the experimental data support the latter model.

  • Since a transition from liquid crystal to crystal state is slow for the large photo-reactive liquid crystal molecules, it needs a long time for recrystallization of LC242 molecules when lowering the temperature of the liquid crystal. Although liquid crystals usually align along one direction, the directions of individual liquid crystal molecules are little different from one another with increasing temperature, resulting in changes of birefringence of the liquid crystal films. When the photo-reactive liquid crystals are photo-cured, faster curing kinetics and much larger curing degrees are observed for the films cured at the liquid crystal phase.

  • ZnWO4 single crystals were grown by Czochralski method. And the orientation of grown crystals were determined by Laue back reflection, and the crystals were siliced at (100), (010), (001) face before polishing. The morphologys and distribution of etch pits on each face were observed by optical microscopy. In the present study, we understood that dislocation distributjioon rely on shape of solid-liquid interface, and secondary phase acts on the dislocation source. We also observed dislocation trace(etch pits) of (100) slip plane on (010) cleavage plane.

  • The birefringence of distributed, uniaxially anisotropic molecules like liquid crystals is calculated as the degree of ordering is varied. The relation between the normalized birefringence ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ and the orientational order parameter S is investigated. The distribution function, which enables one to monitor the degree of ordering of liquid crystals including randomly distributed ones, is introduced. Using this distribution function, a series of distributed liquid crystals with order parameters ranging from 0 to 1 are generated, and ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ and S of the correspondingly distributed liquid crystals are calculated. Based on the calculated data, it is revealed that ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ and S satisfy the quasi-linear relation of $S=(1+a){\Delta}n_{rel}-a{\Delta}n^2_{rel}$, where a can be approximated as $n_o{\frac{{\Delta}n}{4}}$. The anisotropy of molecular polarizability is also calculated, using the birefringence, and separately following Vuks' method and Neugebauer's method, and it is shown that the relations between S and the molecular-polarizability anisotropy are also quasi-linear.
