This paper describes the design for a defective product inspection device for the curved glass used in smart-phone. Cameras are used as inspection devices to find cracks in LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays), PDPs (Plasma Display Panels), etc. The devices used to inspect the curved glass used in smart-phone consist of a camera, two back-light apparatus, an inspection apparatus main body, and an image processing program. Camera image calibration was performed to smooth an image taken with the camera, and as a result, the average error was less than 0.12 pixels. And the image of a smart-phone's curved glass taken with the camera was processed using the produced program. As a result, the program could correctly extract the cracks on the curved glass. Thus, it is thought that the designed inspection device can successful detect cracks in curved tempered glass.

In light guide panels, the PMMA sheet that is used in liquid crystal displays plays an important role in scattering the incident light and requires very fine machining as the sheet is directly related to the optical characteristics of the panels. High speed end milling(HSE) and high speed shaping(HSS) processes that are widely adopted and applied to the precise machining of light incident plane through vibration-assisted HSS for increasing the optical quality by minimizing the above-mentioned problems. The cutting tool and the tool post presented in this paper are designed by the authors to increase the magnitude of the cutting stroke by adopting the resonant frequency without weakening the stiffness and to reduce vibrations during even high speed feeding. The dynamic haracteristics of thecutting tool and the tool post are evaluated through simulation and experiment as well. The results reveal very appropriate dynamic characteristics for vibration-assisted HSS.
Liquid crystal displays (LCD's) are continuously coated with some chemicals in the clean room of a factory. Spreading of these chemicals is causing serious problems both in controlling clean room quality as well as to the workers inside the factory. It is required to alleviate or properly control the offensive odor which is mainly composed of propylene glycol mono ethyl acetate, novolak resin and photo active compound. The control strategy employed is to bleed the offensive odor gas out the clean room. A full scale 3D CFD model was created with anisotropic porous media, chemical species transport with no volumetric reaction, and thermal diffusion with propane gas (tracer gas) to simulate the odor spreading. A segregated implicit solver with standard k-$\varepsilon$ model is employed. The detailed CFD analysis made it possible to develop an effective method of ventilating the coater room and optimizing their capacities.
In order to test the recognition ability and accuracy of a target imaging simulator under the irradiation of solar stray light in a laboratory environment, it needs to be fixed on a five-axis turntable during a hardware-in-the-loop simulation test, so the optical system of the simulator should have a long exit pupil distance. This article adopts a secondary imaging method to design a projection optical system suitable for thin-film-transistor liquid crystal displays. The exit pupil distance of the entire optical system is 1,000 mm, and the final optimization results in the 400 nm-850 nm band show that the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the optical system is greater than 0.8 at the cutoff frequency of 72 lp/mm, and the distortion of each field of view of the system is less than 0.04%. Combined with the design results of the optical system, TracePro software was used to model the optical system, and the simulation of the target imaging simulator at the magnitude of -1 to +6 Mv was analyzed and verified. The magnitude error is less than 0.2 Mv, and the irradiance uniformity of the exit pupil surface is greater than 90%, which meets the requirements of the target imaging simulator.
The light and energy-efficiency of classical liquid crystal displays is notoriously poor due to the use of absorption-based linear polarisers and colour filters. For instance, the light efficiency of PVAL polarisers is typically between 40 and 45 % and the colour filters have a typical efficiency below 35 % which results in a total light and energy-efficiency of the display below 10 %. In the past, a variety of polarizers were developed with an enhanced efficiency in generating linearly polarized light. Typically, these polarizers are based on the polarisationselective reflection, scattering or refraction of light i.e. one polarisation direction of light is directly transmitted to the LCD/viewer and the other polarization direction of light is depolarised and recycled which results in a typical efficiency for generating linearly polarized light of 70-85 %. Also, special colour filters have been proposed based on chiral-nematic reactive mesogens which increase the efficiency of generating colour. Despite the enormous progress in this field, a need persists for improved methods for generating polarized light and colour based on low cost optical components with a high efficiency. Here, the use of holographic phase gratings is reported for the generation of polarized light and colour. The phase grating are recorded in a photopolymer which is coated onto a backor frontlight for LCDs. Typically the recording is performed in the transmisson mode or in the waveguiding mode and slanted phase gratings are generated with their refractive index modulation at an angle between 20o and 45o with the normal of the substrate. It is shown that phase gratings with a high refractive index modulation and a high efficiency can be generated by a proper selection of the photopolymer and illumination conditions. These phase gratings coupleout linearly polarized light with a high contrast (> 100) and the light is directed directly to the LCD/viewer without the need for redirection foils. Dependent on the type of phase grating, the different colours are coupled-out at a slightly different angle which potentially increases the efficiency of classical colour filters. Moreover, the phase gratings are completely transparent in direct view which opens the possibility to use them in frontlights for LCDs. Holographic polarization gratings posses a periodic pattern in the polarization state of light (and not in the intensity of light). A periodic pattern in the polarization direction of linearly polarized light is obtained upon interference of two circularly polarized laser beams. In the second part of the lecture, it is shown that these periodic polarization patterns can be recorded in a linear photo-polymerizable polymer (LPP) and that such an alignment layer induces a period rotation in the director of (reactive and non-reactive) liquid crystals. By a proper design, optical components can be produced with only first order diffraction and with a very high efficiency (>0.98). It is shown that these diffraction gratings are potentially useful in projection displays with a high brightness and energy efficiency

Most display characterization methods, such as the gain-offset-gamma (GOG) model and S-curve model, generally assume that displays have two fundamental characteristics, channel -chromaticity-constancy and channel-independence. However, these assumptions are not so applicable in the case of liquid crystal (LC)-based mobile displays. Accordingly, modifications are required to enable the application of conventional display characterization methods to mobile displays. Therefore, this study proposes the modeling of distinct EOTFs in terms of the X, Y, and Z values for each channel to consider the differences among the EOTFs resulting from channel-chromaticity-inconstancy. In addition, to overcome the poor additivity property among the channels due to channel-interaction, the proposed method also models and uses the EOTFs of the X, Y, and Z values for the inter-channel components cyan, magenta, yellow, and gray Experimental results confirm that the mobile display color values predicted by the proposed characterization method are more accurate than those predicted by other characterization methods due to considering the channel-chromaticity-inconstancy and/or channel-dependence of the display.
Plasma Display Panels(PDPs) require to have improved luminous efficiency, low manufacturing cost, and high image quality to compete with other flat display devices such as Liquid Crystal Displays(LCDs) and organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs). In addition, the diversity of product line-up may be needed for high market share. In this paper, the optical characteristics of typical green phosphor for PDP application are reviewed and the problem-based solution will be proposed. We also shortly describe the principle of 3D-PDPs which are promising. Then, the requirement of green phosphor for 3D-PDP application is summarized and research achievement, as of now, is described. The typical problems of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphor, which is the most well-known, are the negatively charged surface property and the long decay time, which leads to unstable discharge in green cell and afterimage. These problems were solved by coating the phosphor surface with metallic oxide. It was found that $Al_2O_3$ would be the best material for $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphor. It gives longevity as well as low operating voltage due to the charging effect in green cells. Also, new phosphors, $(Y,\;Gd)Al_3(BO_3)_4:Tb$ and $(Mg,\;Zn)Al_2O_4:Mn$ phosphor are proposed for increasing the luminance and reducing the decay time, which are capable to apply for 3D-PDP application.
Dry etching of copper film using $O_2$ plasma and H(hfac) has been investigated. A one-step process consisting of copper film oxidation with an $O_2$ plasma and the removal of surface copper oxide by the reaction with H(hfac) to form volatile Cu(hfac)$_2$ and $H_2O$ was carried but. The etching rate of Cu in the range from 50 to 700 /min was obtained depending on the substrate temperature, the H(hfac)/O$_2$ flow rate ratio, and the plasma power. The copper film etch rate increased with increasing RF power at the temperatures higher than 215$^{\circ}C$. The optimum H(hfac)/O$_2$ flow rate ratio was 1:1, suggesting that the oxidation process and the reaction with H(hfac) should be in balance. Cu patterning using a Ti mask was performed at a flow rate ratio of 1:1 on 25$0^{\circ}C$\ulcorner and an isotropic etching profile with a taper slope of 30$^{\circ}$was obtained. Cu dry patterning with a tapered angle which is necessary for the advanced high resolution large area thin film transistor liquid-crystal displays was thus successfully obtained from one step process by manipulating the substrate temperature, RF power, and flow rate ratio.

For various applications of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the uniform alignment of liquid crystal (LC) molecules on treated surfaces is significantly important. Generally, a rubbing method has been widely used to align the LC molecules on polyimide (PI) surfaces. Rubbed PI surfaces have suitable characteristics, such as uniform alignment. However, the rubbing method has some drawbacks, such as the generation of electrostatic charges and the creation of contaminating particles. Thus, we strongly recommend a non contact alignment technique for future generations of large high-resolution LCDs. Most recently, the LC aligning capabilities achieved by ultraviolet and ion-beam exposures which are non contact methods, on diamond-like carbon (DLC) inorganic thin film layers have been successfully studied because DLC thin films have a high mechanical hardness, a high electrical resistivity, optical transparency, and chemical inertness. In addition, nitrogen-doped DLC (NDLC) thin films exhibit properties similar to those of the DLC thin films and a higher thermal stability than the DLC thin films because C:N bonding in the NDLC thin filmsis stronger against thermal stress than C:H bonding in the DLC thin films. Our research group has already studied the NDLC thin films by an ion-beam alignment method. The $SiN_x$ thin films deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition are widely used as an insulation layer for a thin film transistor, which has characteristics similar to those of DLC inorganic thin films. Therefore, in this paper, we report on LC alignment effects and pretilt angle generation on a $SiN_x$, thin film treated by ion-beam irradiation for various N ratios
