  • The standards related to the "Urban Gas Business Act" and the "Safety Control and Business Regulation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Act" prescribe the separation distance between gas piping joint excluding welded joints and electric equipments(electric switch, watt meter, breaker, connector, etc). The "Korea Electro technical Regulation" also prescribes the distance between gas piping joints and electric equipments in accordance with the gas related standards. In case of the standards related to the "Urban Gas Business Act", the distance criteria stipulated in the standard of supplying facilities are different from those stipulated in the standard of using facilities. In this study, we have conducted pilot test on the possible ignition distance from the piping joint when LP gas is leaked from the point. We have also examined the adequacy of current standards on the separation distance between gas piping joint and electric equipments. As a result of the tests, we have found that ignition is able to occur at a distance of 30 cm as stipulated in the current standards or more when LP gas is leaked from the joint of the pipe. Therefore, we have made a decision that the criteria for separation distance between gas piping joint and electric equipment specified in the current standards related to the "Urban Gas Business Act" and the "Safety Control and Business Regulation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Act" is appropriate.

  • In general, odorants are added to fuel gases, such as LPG, LNG and city gas, to prevent gas poisoning, ignition, explosion, or other accident caused by fuel gases, and to enable immediate and easy detection of fuel-gas leakage by emitting an offensive smell. This study describes a study on the performance and exhaust emissions (CO, THC, $CO_2$, $NO_x$, $SO_2$) characteristics of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) engine using LPG fuel with new sulfur free odorant (K-Petro S-Free). New sulfur free odorant (40 mg/kg) was added to 2 type LPG fuels for summer, and winter and it was used in performance and exhaust emissions, compare to LPG fuel with sulfur containing odorant (EM, ethyl mercaptan). Engine performance using LPG with sulfur free odorant was similar to LPG with sulfur-containing odorant. Exhaust emissions (CO, THC, $CO_2$, $NO_x$) of LPG with sulfur free odorant were also similar characteristics, compare with sulfur containing odorant. Especially, $SO_2$ emission using LPG with K-Petro S-Free odorant was more reduced 83 % than LPG with sulfur containing odorant(EM) at 2000 rpm.

  • As sea water is being used as only heat source of LNG open rack vaporizer, serious problem has been risen in LNG terminal by the lack of heating energy source for LNG vaporization due to the temperature drop of sea water in winter. In this paper the new double-tube triple-flow(TRIDEX) vaporizer was suggested to solve the problem and the system was thermally analysed. LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) and sea water were introduced as the heat sources for LNG TRIDEX vaporizer. The flow patterns of TRIDEX vaporizer are as follows: LNG flow in the annular space, PG(petroleum gas) flow in the inner tube, and sea water flow in the outside of the double pipe. The overall LNG vaporization system was consisted of TRIDEX vaporizer, LPG vaporizer and PG heater. LPG in TRIDEX was directly dispersed in the sea water desalination unit, so that LPG turns to be gas phase for the reuse in TRIDEX vaporizer. New TRIDEX vaporizer system for LNG evaporation was analysed as much more effective than the present single tube one in the case of colder temperature of sea water in winter.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been used as motor fuel due to its low emissions and low cost. The fuel feeding system has been improved with stringent requirement for exhaust emissions. LPG carburetion system was first introduced, then the system has been changed to a precisely controlled gas injection system, but this gas feeding system has a limitation on improving power output. In order to improve an engine performance, a multi-point port injection system was introduced recently, and a liquid direct injection system into a cylinder was suggested as a next generation system to maximize a fuel economy as well as a power. This study addresses the analysis of the LPG spray from diesel injectors. The spray images are visualized and compared with diesel sprays in a wide injection pressure range. The photographs show much wider dispersion of LPG sprays.

  • Highly accurate control of an air-fuel ratio is very important to reduce exhaust gas emissions of gaseous-fuel engines. In order to achieve this purpose, a precise engine model is required to estimate engine performance from the engine design process which is applied to the design of an engine controller. Engine dynamics are considered to develop a dynamic engine model of a gaseous-fuel engine. An effective air mass ratio is proposed to study variations of the engine dynamics according to the water vapor and the gaseous-fuel in the mixture. The dynamic engine model is validated with the LPG engine under steady and transient operating conditions. The experimental results in the LPG gaseous-fuel engine show that the estimation of the air flow and the air-fuel ratio based upon the effective air mass ratio is more accurate than that of a normal engine model.

  • This paper presents a neural network approach to control exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) in a Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) engine. In order to meet Increasingly stringent automotive exhaust emission regulations, alternative fuels such as LPG engines have been developed in many countries. HC&CO emissions of LPG engines can be easily reduced through air-fuel ratio control, but the control effect on NOx reduction is not good enough. Consequently EGR system is introduced to achieve a significant reduction in NOx emissions. Conventional EGR control uses the mapping method. The calibration time is long and the work is complex when adopting this mapping method. However neural networks are suitable f...

  • Throughout the world, studies on the water energization are currently under way. Of those, Brown gas, which is generated through the electrolyzation of water and is a mixed gas of the constant volume of 2 parts hydrogen to 1 part oxygen, has better characteristics in terms of economy, energy efficiency, and environmental affinity than those of acetylene gas and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) used for existing welding machines. This paper analyzes the characteristics of Brown gas and presents methods for increasing the generating efficiency of Brown gas by designing a power supply to deliver power to a water-electrolytic cell and designing a cylindrical electrode to improve the efficiency of the electrolyzer needed for water electrolyzation. Based on the above the methods, a welding machine using Brown gas is developed. And the generation efficiency of Brown gas is measured tinder different conditions (duty ratio, frequency and amplitude) of supplied power.

  • This study introduced concept of safety valve about development of valve for LP gas cylinders. LP gas cylinders are used more because of convenience of use, but a lot of accidents are occurred. Specially, it is used by purpose to injure glossary or others and is sometimes used to a demonstration tool. Korean government was making mandatory to use overuse cutoff valve to reduce accident, but it is real condition that product development is not following. In this study, introduce concept of safety valve that introduce more original safety concept than overuse cutoff valve. This was developed by method that insert module to present use valve and flowing of gas is controlled in state that hose or regulator un-connects to valve. Also, flowing of gas cut-off immediately if hose is cut or occurrence of overuse is produced even if is using normally.

  • As an automobile fuel, LPG has many environmental advantages compared to gasoline or diesel. However, current LPG engine which is provided with LPG fuel as gas form has lower power and worse fuel efficiency than gasoline engine. These problems of low power and bad fuel efficiency come from lower volumetric efficiency. Also there is a new rising problem of high failure ratio in an engine emission test. Although there are many factors which affect engine performance of exhaust gas emission, one believes that the fact that ECM of gasoline engine is used for LPG engine when retrofitting gasoline engine to LPG engine is one of the main problems, which lower engine power and emit more noxious gas due to wrong ignition timing. To solve these problems, one studied the effects of ignition timing on the exhaust gas to find out the optimum condition of ignition timing. The experimental results show that noxious exhaust gas is reduced and engine power is increased if the optimum control of ignition timing is applied in accordance to the revolution speed of engine.
