Effects of hydrogen-enriched LPG fuelled engine on exhaust emission and thermal efficiency (LPG 엔진에서 수소첨가에 따른 배기 성능과 열효율에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of study is to obtain low-emission and high-efficiency in LPG engine with hydrogen enrichment. The test engine was named heavy-duty variable compression ratio single cylinder engine (VCSCE). The fuel supply system provides LPG/hydrogen mixtures based on same heating value. Various sensors such as crank shaft position sensor (CPS) and hall sensor supply spark timing data to ignition controller. Displacement of VCSCE is $1858.2cm^3$. VCSCE was runned 1400rpm with compression ratio 8. Spark timing was set MBT without knocking. Relative air-fuel ratio(${\lambda}$) of this work was varied between 0.76 and 1.5. As a result, i) Maximum thermal efficiency occurred at ${\lambda}$ value 1.0. It was shown that thermal efficiency was increased approximately 5% with hydrogen enrichment at same ${\lambda}$ value. ii) Engine-out carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were decreased at a great rate under LPG/hydrogen mixture fuelling. iii) Total hydrocarbon (THC) emission was much exhausted in rich zone, same as CO. But THC was exhausted a little bit more in lean zone. iv) Finally, engine-out oxides of nitrogen (NOx) was increased with ${\lambda}$ value 1.0 zone at a greater rate with hydrogen enrichment due to high adiabatic flame temperature.

Thermodynamic Performance Analysis of Ammonia-Water Rankine Cycle and Organic Rankine Cycle Using Cold Energy of LNG (LNG 냉열을 이용하는 암모니아-물 랭킨 사이클과 유기 랭킨 사이클의 열역학적 성능 특성 해석)

  • Recently, the technologies to utilize the cold energy of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have attracted significant attention. In this paper, thermodynamic performance analysis of combined cycles consisting of ammonia Rankine cycle (AWR) and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with LNG Rankine cycle to recover low-grade heat source and the cold energy of LNG. The mathematical models are developed and the effects of the important system parameters such as turbine inlet pressure, ammonia mass fraction, working fluid on the system performance are systematically investigated. The results show that the thermal efficiency of AWR-LNG cycle is higher but the total power production of ORC-LNG cycle is higher.

A Study on the Power Generation Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (초임계 이산화탄소를 활용한 발전에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, the power generation efficiency increase has been studied for a Rankine cycle using both supercritical carbon dioxide as a working fluid and LNG as a coolant with PRO/II with PROVISION release 10.0 from Aveva company. Peng-Robinson equation of the state model with Twu's alpha function was selected for the modeling of the power generation cycle using LNG cold heat. Power generation efficiency was increased from 24.82% to 57.76% when using LNG as a coolant for supercritical carbon dioxide power generation cycle.

  • Comparative studies between single- and two-stage expansion process using LNG cold heat have been performed for a closed Rankine power generation cycle. PRO/II with PROVISION release 10.0 from Schneider Electric Company was used, and the Peng-Robinson equation of state model with Twu's alpha function was selected for the modeling and optimization of the power generation cycle using LNG cold heat. In two-stage power generation cycle, 6.7% more power was obtained compared to that of single-stage power generation cycle through the optimization works.

  • In this study, a computer simulation work has been performed for the separation of electronic grade highly pure carbon dioxide more than 7 N purity through a cryogenic distillation process. For the cold utility as a cooling medium for a condenser of the cryogenic distillation column, propylene was utilized as a refrigerant in the vapor-recompression refrigeration cycle. Through this work, it was concluded that the cryogenic distillation column with two stage compression and refrigeration cycle were essential to obtain a highly-pure liquefied CO2.

Comparative Research on the Carbon Dioxide Liquefaction Using Several Refrigerants (몇 가지 냉매를 사용한 이산화탄소 액화에 대한 비교 연구)

  • In this study, we compared the performance of several refrigeration cycles using different refrigerants and utilizing the cold heat of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the liquefaction of carbon dioxide. The final conditions for the liquefied CO2 were set to -20℃ and 20 bar. The refrigerants used included R404a, ammonia, propane, and propylene using a vapor recompression refrigeration cycle. For the refrigeration cycle, the CO2 at room temperature and pressure was compressed in a two-stage compression process with an intermediate cooling stage using a refrigeration unit. To compare with the liquefaction process using refrigeration, we compressed the CO2 to 8 bar in a single compression stage and cooled it to around -50℃ using the cold heat of the LNG before liquefying it. Results showed that using ammonia as the refrigerant required the least amount of compressor power for the liquefaction process, and the heat transfer area of the evaporator was the smallest when using propylene as the refrigerant. Using the cold heat of LNG instead of refrigeration using R404a resulted in approximately 69% less energy consumption.

  • Reliable $H_2$ supply is necessary for entering a $H_2$ society. Among the various $H_2$ storage and transportation methods, liquid organic $H_2$ carrier (LOHC) is in the spotlight because of a lot of advantages compared to conventional one such as compressed $H_2$ and liquefied $H_2$. Therefore, we performed preliminary economic analysis of $H_2$ supply cost using LOHC for a $H_2$ production capacity of $300Nm^3\;h^{-1}$ employing itemized cost estimation and sensitivity analysis to evaluate economic viability of this technology in Korea.

  • The core of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier cargo containment system (CCS) is to store and transport LNG safely under temperatures below -163 degrees Celsius. The secondary barrier of the LNG CCS is adopted to prevent LNG leakage from CCS to the ship's hull structure. Recently, as the size of the LNG CCS increases, various studies have been conducted on the applied temperature and load ranges. The present study investigates the working condition-dependent bonding strength of the PU15 adhesives of the secondary barrier. In addition, the mechanical performance is analyzed at a cryogenic temperature of -170 degrees Celsius, and the failure surface and failure mode are investigated depending on the working condition of the bonded process. Even though the RSB and FSB-based fracture mode was confirmed, the results showed that all the tested scenarios satisfied the minimum requirement of the regulation.

A Study on the Evaluations of Damage Impact due to VCE in Liquid Hydrogen Charging Station (액화수소 충전스테이션에서 VCE로 인한 피해영향평가에 관한 연구)

  • Hydrogen charging station was invested and supported around the world. In this study, the extent of damage caused by VCE in the charging station handling liquefied hydrogen was calculated, and the human and material damage was estimated through the Probit model. In addition The optimal height of vent stack for low temperature hydrogen was set. The damage range is 8.24m in small scale, 14.10m in medium scale, and 22.38m in large scale based on interest overpressure 6.9kPa. In case of death due to pulmonary hemorrhage, 50m of the small and medium scale and 100m of the large scale were injured. Structural damage was 200m in small scale, 300m in medium scale and 500m in large scale. The optimum height of the vent stack is 4.7 m in small scale, 8.8 m in medium scale and 16.9 m in large scale.

  • Mesoporous aluminas (A-C, A-A, and A-N) were prepared by a templating method using cationic(C), anionic(A), and non-ionic(N) surfactant as a structure-directing agent, respectively. Nickel catalysts supported on mesoporous alumina (Ni/A-C, Ni/A-A, and Ni/A-N) were then prepared by an impregnation method, and were applied to hydrogen production by steam reforming of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Regardless of surfactant type, nickel species were finely dispersed on the surface of mesoporous alumina in the calcined catalysts. It was revealed that interaction between nickel species and support in the reduced catalysts was strongly dependent on the identity of surfactant. LNG conversion and $H_2$ composition in dry gas increased in the order of Ni/A-C < Ni/A-A < Ni/A-N. It was found that catalytic performance increased with increasing nickel surface area in the reduced catalyst. Among the catalyst tested, Ni/A-N catalyst with the highest nickel surface area showed the best catalytic performance.
