  • Based on the equivalent uniform stress concept Presented by Seed and Idriss, sinusoidal cyclic loads which simplified earthquake loads have been applied in evaluating the liquefaction resistance strength experimentally. However, the liquefaction resistance strength of soil based on the equivalent uniform stress concept can not exactly reflect the dynamic characteristics of the irregular earthquake motion. The liquefaction assessment method which was invented by using the equivalent uniform stress concept is suitable for the severe earthquake region such as Japan or USA, so the proper method to Korea is needed. In this study, estimation of the resistance to liquefaction was conducted by applying real earthquake loading to the cyclic triaxial test. From the test results, the characteristics of the fine sand under moderate earthquake were analyzed and compared with the results under strong earthquakes. Typically real earthquake loads used in this study are divided into two types - impact type and vibration type. Furthermore, results of the liquefaction resistance strength based on the equivalent uniform stress concept and tile concept using real earthquake loading were compared.

  • In order to study the effects of shell contents on the liquefaction resistance of the shelly sand, NGI cyclic simple shear tests were performed for the shelly sands with shell contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% under the effective vertical stress of 50kPa, 100kPa and 150kPa for 40% and 55% of relative density, respectively. Cyclic simple shear test results showed that for the low effective vertical stress, liquefaction resistance increased rapidly with the increase of shell contents in both 40% and 55% relative density. On the other hand, for the high effective vertical stress, the liquefaction resistance increased slightly in 40% relative density whereas the resistance was almost same in 55% relative density. Liquefaction resistance decreased with increasing effective vertical stress for both 40% and 55% relative density. In the same effective vertical stress and shell contents, liquefaction resistance increased with the increase of relative density of sands.

  • An experimental assessment on the dynamic behavior of saturated sand which can consider the irregular characteristics of earthquakes was proposed. The equivalent uniform stress concept presented by Seed and Idriss has been applied to evaluate the liquefaction resistance strength to simplify earthquake loading. However, it was known that the liquefaction resistance strength of soil based on the equivalent uniform stress concept can't exactly mirror the dynamic characteristics of the irregular earthquake motion. In this study, estimation of the criterion of the liquefaction resistance strength was determined by applying real earthquake loading to the cyclic triaxial test. From the test results, relationships between excess pore water pressure and the earthquake characteristics such as magnitude or duration were determined. Magnitude scaling factors to determine the soil liquefaction resistance strength in seismic design were also proposed.

  • In this study, series of cyclic triaxial tests and shear velocity measurement were conducted using Pohang sand, which was taken from liquefaction observed area, to verify the liquefaction characteristics of Pohang. The cyclic resistance ratio(CRR) was derived based on the test results. A specimen was reconstituted into 40% and 80% relative density conditions and then a series of cyclic triaxial tests and shear-wave velocity measurement were conducted. As a result, the effect of particle distribution and relative density to liquefaction resistance was verified. The liquefaction resistance of Pohang sand was evaluated by comparing with other liquefaction resistance of sands from previous research. In addition, the liquefaction resistance curve from field observation data was used to verify the reliability of results from this study by measured shear-wave velocity.

  • In this study, the effect of relative density and fine contents(Finer then # 0.08mm sieve) on liquefaction phenomenon in reclaimed land by hydraulic hammer compaction is analyzed. For more site-specific studies, reclaimed land in Inchon International Airport is selected and the cyclic triaxial tests are performed on disturbed samples. In cyclic triaxial tests, the characteristics of reclaimed land in Inchon International Airport are considered sufficiently. The liquefaction resistance stress ratio ($\tau$$\ell$/$\sigma$v') can be defined by relative density 40, 50, 60, and 70% and also by fine contents : 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% under relative density (D$\_$r/) 50% used disturbed samples. From tile result of comparing tile cyclic triaxial tests, it is shown that the liquefaction strength of soil increases with increases of relative density and fine contents. Fspecially fine contents is the main factor affecting the liquefaction potential. In addition, the liquefaction resistance stress ratio is reduced by the increase of fine content and tile ratio of change is steep until fine contents 20% and that is flexible during the range of fine contents 20% to 40%. Through this study, it is proved that the soil characteristics (fine contents 5∼20%) of the reclaimed land in Inchon International Airport flays an important role in the reduction of liquefaction potential.

  • Understanding the post-liquefaction shear behavior is crucial for predicting and assessing the damage, such as lateral flow, caused by liquefaction. Most studies have focused on the behavior until liquefaction occurs. In this study, we performed undrained multi-stage tests on clean sand, sand-silt mixtures, and silty soils to investigate post-liquefaction shear strain based on soil compressibility. The results confirmed that it is necessary to consider the soil compressibility and the shape of soil particles to understand the post-liquefaction shear strain characteristics. Based on this, an index reflecting soil compressibility and particle shape was derived, and the results showed a high correlation with post-liquefaction small resistance characteristic regardless of soil type and fine particle content.

  • The effects of mean particle size and uniformity coefficient of dredged soils to the liquefaction resistance strength and dynamic characteristics are experimentally studied in this paper. Representative 4 mean particle sizes and 3 uniformity coefficients were selected and 12 representative particle size distribution curves which have different mean particle sizes and uniformity coefficients, were artificially manufactured using the real dredged river soil. Cyclic triaxial tests and torsional shear tests were carried out to analyze the effect of mean particle size and uniformity coefficient to the liquefaction resistance strength and dynamic characteristics of soils.

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics and liquefaction resistance characteristics of silica sand which is used to simulate sandy layer were conducted using the cyclic triaxial test according to the relative density difference. The difference in liquefaction resistance with the relative density was confirmed through the test results, which the relative density conditions were changed to 40%, 60%, and 80%, and the cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) curve of the silica sand was obtained. In addition, in order to examine the validity of the liquefaction resistance ratio (CRR) curve, artificial silica sand ground was created, and liquefaction potential was evaluated through the simple assessment method and the detailed assessment method, and the safety factors of each were compared.
