  • Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate the liquefaction potential of the land reclamation area in Incheon by using the ProShake program for long frequency Hachinohe seismic wave and short frequency Ofunato seismic waves to interpret ground response. Method: The interpretation results and the Modified Seed and Idriss method were used to evaluate the liquefaction potential. The liquefaction potential index which proposed by Iwasaki was calculated to be used as a guide line to represent the liquefaction evaluation results at the given location. The equivalent liquefaction factor of safety presented by Kang(1999) was used as a quantitative index to draw up the mapping of liquefaction potential. Results: This paper presents the mapping of liquefaction potential for the Incheon seaside reclamation area using both the liquefaction potential index and the equivalent liquefaction factor of safety. Conclution: As a result, the mapping of liquefaction based on the liquefaction potential index and equivalent liquefaction factor of safety shows similar distribution pattern.

  • In this study, liquefaction evaluation was performed by applying liquefaction evaluation criteria commonly applied in Korea and recently revised evaluation criteria to five sites where liquefaction was observed or potential for liquefaction was high during the 2017 Pohang earthquake. The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of the revised domestic liquefaction evaluation criteria by comparing and reviewing the results of the theoretical liquefaction evaluation with the actual liquefaction occurrence at the sites. For the analysis of earthquakes for the evaluation of the liquefaction, the actual Pohang earthquake wave, as well as the waves that was conventionally used in Korea, was used. The magnitude of the peak ground acceleration of analysis earthquake varied from 0.097 g to 0.2713 g. From the analysis results, the validity of the liquefaction evaluation criteria presented in the 2016 Foundation Design Criteria, which has been commonly applied in Korea, was evaluated. From the evaluation results, the improvement of the existing criteria was suggested, and the suitability of revised items of liquefaction evaluation criteria presented in the Seismic Design General established in 2018 was confirmed.

  • Liquefaction of soil foundation is one of the major seismic damage types of infrastructures. In this paper, deterministic and probabilistic approaches for the evaluation of liquefaction potential are briefly summarized and the risk assessment method is newly proposed using seismic fragility and seismic hazard curves. Currently the deterministic approach is widely used to evaluate the liquefaction potential in Korea. However, the there are a certain degree of uncertainties in the soil properties such as elastic modulus and resistant capacity, therefore the probabilistic approach is more promising. Two types of probabilistic approach are introduced including (1) failure probability for a given design earthquake and (2) the seismic risk of liquefaction of soil for a given service life. The results from different methods show a similar trend, and the liquefaction potential can be more quantitatively evaluated using risk analysis method.

  • To investigate the liquefaction potential of sands, a series of untrained cyclic triaxial compression tests is carried out on the samples of Ottawa, Joomoonjin, Hn river and Hongseung sands. The constitutive equations of sands are derived to explain the mechanical behavior of sands under cyclic stresses, and are applicable to liquefaction analysis. The following results are obtainded in this study. 1. Sands with the lower confining pressure or relative density are to be easily liquefied, and when the amplitude of cyclic stress are large, liquefaction takes places over only a few cycles. 2. Stress ratio, porewater pressure ratio and cyclic shear strains are to be good criteria to evaluate liquefaction potential of sands. 3. Hongseung sands which contains some silty clay shows higher dynamic properties than other sands. 4. The dynamic behaviors of undisturbed Hongseung sand are about same as those of dense sands. It is noted that undisturbed Hongseung sand shows higher liquefaction potential than the samples made by pluviation under same relative density, 5. The constitutive equations of soils under cyclic loads are developed based on the theory of elasto-plasticity, logarithmic stress-strain rela'tionship, non-associated flow rule and the concept of the boundary surface. The derived equations is applicable to predict the behavior of sands under cyclic loads and liquefaction potential with a higher accuracy. 6. Based on results of the study it may be concluded that cracks of the foundations and dislocation of the structures at Hongseung earthquakes(Oct. 7, 1978, Richter scald 5.2) are not brought by the liquefaction process.

In this paper, deterministic and probabilistic approaches for the evaluation of liquefaction potential are briefly summarized and the risk assessment method is newly proposed using seismic fragility and seismic hazard analyses. Currently the deterministic approach is widely used to evaluate the liquefaction potential in Korea. However, it is very difficult to handle a certain degree of uncertainties in the soil properties such as elastic modulus and resistant capacity by deterministic approach, and the probabilistic approaches are known as more promising. Two types of probabilistic approaches are introduced including (1) the reliability analysis (to obtain probability of failure) for a given design earthquake and (2) the seismic risk analysis of liquefaction for a specific soil for a given service life. The results from different methods show a similar trend, and the liquefaction potential can be more quantitatively evaluated using the new risk analysis method.

  • The laboratory tests are performed on how the liquefaction potential of the sea dike structures on the saturated sand or silty sand seabed could be affected due to earthquake before and after construction results are given as follows ; 1. Earthquake damages to sea dike structures consist of lateral deformation, settlement, minor abnormality of the structures and differential settlement of embankments, etc. It is known that severe disasters due to this type of damages are not much documented. Because of its high relative cost of the preventive measures against this type of damages, the designing engineer has much freedom for the play of judgement and ingenuity in the selection of the construction methods, that is, by comparing the cost of the preventive design cost at a design stage to reconstruction cost after minor failure. 2. The factors controlling the liquefaction potential of the hydraulic fill structure are magnitude of earthquake(max. surface velocity), N-value(relative density), gradation, consistency(plastic limit), classification of soil(G & vs), ground water level, compaction method, volumetric shear stress and strain, effective confining stress, and primary consolidation. 3. The probability of liquefaction can be evaluated by the simple method based on SPT and CPT test results or the precise method based on laboratory test results. For sandy or silty sand seabed of the concerned area of this study, it is said that evaluation of liquefaction potential can be done by the one-dimensional analysis using some geotechnical parameters of soil such as Ip, Υt' gradation, N-value, OCR and classification of soils. 4. Based on above mentioned analysis, safety factor of liquefaction potential on the sea bed at the given site is Fs =0.84 when M = 5.23 or amax= 0.12g. With sea dike structures H = 42.5m and 35.5m on the same site Fs= 3.M~2.08 and Fs = 1.74~1.31 are obtained, respectively. local liquefaction can be expected at the toe of the sea dike constructed with hydraulic fill because of lack of constrained effective stress of the area.

  • A comprehensive laboratory investigation of the liquefaction characteristics of Jumunjin standard sand. Seoul sand and Hongsung sand was peformed by the undrained cyclic triaxial compression test under different relative densities, confining pressures and cyclic deviator stresses. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. Liquefaction potential was dominated by the stress ratio at a given number of cycle. That is, the number of cycle required to cause initial liquefaction became samller as the stress ratio increased. 2. Liquefaction potential of a sand was infliuenced by initial relative density or void ratio. Under a given relative density. liquefaction potential of Jumunjin standard sand and Seoul sand was smaller than that of Hongsung sand. 3. The pore pressure ratio of Hongsung sand was the smallest three under a given relative density and stress ratio, and it showed higher value when the cyclic stress and the shear strain were high. 4. An excessive pore pressure ratio not found when initial shear was smaller than 0.01%, and the pore pressure ratio started to increase when initial shear became greater than 0.01%. 5. Soil texture is an important factor to cause liquefaction, and liquefaction potential decreased a the mean grain size decreased. however the sand having fine grain such as Hongsung sand showed somewhat higher liquefaction potential. 6. Based on the analysis of the specimens whose number of the cycles to cause liquefaction was 8~12, it was found that the relationship between density and stress ratio was linear. The curves for Hongsung sand was steeper than the other. 7. From the above results and the method suggested by Seed-Idriss, it may be considered that the damages by Hongsung earthquake was not directly caused by liquefaction.
