This study performed model tunnel tests in order to investigate the influence of discontinuity condition of rock mass to the stress and deformation of tunnel lining. Tests were carried out changing the direction of main joint and lateral earth pressure condition of rock mass. Test results revealed that the axial force in tunnel lining showed a tendency of decrease with the presence of joints. It decreased much with the increase of lateral earth pressure coefficient. And, it also showed that the location or maximum displacement and maximum stress in lining were changed by the direction of main joint of rock mass. The tangential stress and normal stress showed the difference above the maximum twenty times as lateral earth pressure coefficient due to effect of joints increased. Also, these tendencies of concentration of tensile stress in tunnel lining were confirmed by elastic theory.
The channel-type lining board that partial welded on many partition frames is used to normal servicing lining board type. On this study is to investigate existing channel-type lining board's capacity by using the static loading test. From this study, to develop new-type lining board which reflect well cross section area and sectional modulus of existing channel-type lining board. Six types FEM model are adopted. The accumulated test results of stress conditions and deflections by section shapes will be used to analyzed the relation between the capacity and the section shape. With the comparing the results of static loading test and FEM analysis.
The application of the mechanized tunnelling has been extended in recent years. There are at present different approaches that are used in the design of segmental tunnel linings supported in mechanized tunnels. Even though segmental lining is utilized for mechanized tunnels, its behaviour is still quite unclear under in situ stress and there is a lack of data regarding the distribution of stresses inside segmental linings. So far no single effective calculation method exists for segmental lining design. The lack of clear solutions makes the use of segmental lining to be more expensive due to the adoption of greater safety factors. Therefore, a particular attention must be given in order to obtain data from monitored tunnels which permits to validate design methods. In this study, strain measurements, which were conducted during the construction of twin tunnels in the Bologna-Florence railway line, have been presented. The behaviour of segmental lining during the excavation and the influence of a new tunnel excavation on an existing tunnel have been shown through the measured data. The data are then compared with the results obtained with Einstein and Schwartz's method and Duddeck and Erdmann's method, which permits to highlight the fact that the two analytical methods underestimate structural forces induced in the segmental lining and then must be used with caution.
Tunnel lining is the final support of a tunnel and reflects the results of the interaction between ground and support system. Recently it is very difficult to support and manage the tunnel because the cracks on tunnel lining cause many problems in supporting and managing tunnels. Therefore the analysis of the cracks is quite strongly required. In this study, mechanical behaviour of a tunnel lining was examined by model tests and by numerical analyses. Especially the model test was examined for double linings including shotcrete and concrete lining. The model tests were carried out under various conditions taking different loading shapes, horizontal stresses, thicknesses of linings and double lining, vault opening behind the concrete lining and rock-like medium surrounding the lining. Due to horizontal stress, compressive stress prevailed on the lining. Thus the bearing capacity of the lining increased. The existence of a vault opening behind the concrete lining reduced the bearing capacity by the similar amount of reduction of concrete lining thickness. Rock-like medium cast around the side wall of the lining restrained the deflection of the lining, and the bearing capacity for cracking and failure increased vary much. In numerical analyses a algorithm which can analysis the double lining by introduction of interface element was developed. And the results of the numerical analyses were compared with the results of the model tests.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the lining board's capacity by using the static loading test and fatigue test. Specimens that constitute the H & Channel type lining board are adopted. The test is to inspect the possibility of retrofit and efficiency, which is required to upgrade the structure's capacity and to examine the effects of the improvements of specimen by using structural analysis, stress analysis, static loading test and fatigue test, respectively. The accumulated test results of stress condition and deflection by bending will be used to analyze the relation between the cause of fatigue crack occurrence and the behavior of both structure system and the steel.

This paper presents the interaction effect between tunneling and groundwater on tunnel behavior. A parametric study is then conducted on the various tunneling situations frequently encountered in Seoul area using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled finite-element model with emphasis on the effects of ground and lining permeabilities. It is shown that the ground and lining responses are significantly influenced by the relative permeability between the ground and the lining, and that the circumferential pre-grouting is effective in minimizing the tunnelling and groundwater interaction.
NATM technic had been applied to Nakaya tunnel of Sin kan express R.R lines in 1975. on the worst expandable geological conditions, application of NATM method was carried out good result. Measurement data which include convergencymeter, inclinometer, extensometor load-cell, strain gage data of shotcrete stress and steel arch. was explained with slides. Induced NATM technic has been improved since 1975 as follows, specially adhesive method of shotcrete instead of spray method such as tunnel swift lining Sliding press lining, clean lining by pumping and sweeping tote lining ets.
Explosions inside transportation tunnels might result in failure of tunnel structures. This study investigated the failure mechanisms of circular cast-iron tunnels in saturated soil subjected to medium internal blast loading. This issue is crucial to tunnel safety as many transportation tunnels run through saturated soils. At the same time blast loading on saturated soils may induce residual excess pore pressure, which may result in soil liquefaction. A series of numerical simulations were carried out using Finite Element program LS-DYNA. The effect of soil liquefaction was simulated by the Federal Highway soil model. It was found that the failure modes of tunnel lining were differed with different levels of blast loading. The damage and failure of the tunnel lining was progressive in nature and they occurred mainly during lining vibration when the main event of blast loading was over. Soil liquefaction may lead to more severe failure of tunnel lining. Soil deformation and soil liquefaction were determined by the coupling effects of lining damage, lining vibration, and blast loading. The damage of tunnel lining was a result of internal blast loading as well as dynamic interaction between tunnel lining and saturated soil, and stress concentration induced by a ventilation shaft connected to the tunnel might result in more severe lining damage.

Prediction of lining loads is one of the key issues to be addressed in the design of a tunnel. The validity of the existing design methods is reviewed by comparing the loads calculated using the methods with the field measurements obtained from several tunnels in Edmonton, carada. However, the existing methods are determined not to be fully satisfactory for the prediction of primary lining loads. To account for the stress reduction occurring prior to lining installation, the stress reduction factor is used coupled with an analytical solution for calculation of lining loads. Typical values of dimensionless load factors nD/H for tunnels in Edmonton are obtained from parametric analyses and presented in a table. The loads calculated using the proposed method are compared with field measurements collected from tunnels in Edmonton to verify the method. The method can be used for other tunnels if the tunnels are built in stiff or dense soils, where good ground control is accomplished during the tunnel construction.

Cost effective design and construction are necessary to establish the design concept of tunnel lining. Loosening load acting on the concrete lining is compared with Terzaghi tunnel theory and numerical analysis. It is analyzed under the condition of weathered rock and soil with varying in-situ stress ratio ($K_0$). Based on the result, loosening load calculated by Tcrzaghi tunnel theory is much greater than numerical analysis results. And the load calculated in weathered soil is lager than weathered rock condition. As in-situ stress ratio increases, the stress acting on the tunnel lining decreases in Terzaghi theory rapidly, whereas there is little effect in numerical analysis.
