In this paper, we propose a new synthetic aperture focusing scheme for improving the lateral resolution which is one of the most important factors determining the quality of ultrasound imaging. The proposed scheme enables full round-trip dynamic focusing with approximately limited property. This properties are obtained through transmitting plane waves of which the traveling angle varies with the receive subaperture position, as opposed to stepping the spherical wave source across an array in other synthetic aperture focusing schemes, and employing dynamic focusing in receive. In this paper, the properties of the proposed scheme is analyzed in which a hypothetical infinite line source is used to transmit the plane waves and verified through computer simulation results. Also, we show that the proposed scheme is realizable with an array transducer with a finite aperture size. In summary, it is shown through comparison between the field contours of the proposed scheme and the conventional scheme that the proposed scheme can improve greatly the lateral resolution of ultrasound imaging.

Among the various wave power systems, Salter's duck (rotor) is one of the most effective wave absorbers for extracting wave energy. The rotor shape is designed such that the front part faces the direction of the incident wave, which forces it to bob up and down due to wave-induced water particle motion, whereas the rear part, which is mostly circular in shape, reflects no waves. The asymmetric geometric shape of the duck makes it absorb energy efficiently. In the present study, the rotor was investigated using WAMIT (a program based on the linear potential flow theory in three-dimensional diffraction/radiation analyses) in the frequency domain and verified using OrcaFlex (design and analysis program of marine system) in the time domain. Then, an experimental investigation was conducted to assess the performance of the rotor motion based on the model scale in a two-dimensional (2D) wave tank. Initially, a free decay test (FDT) was carried out to obtain the viscous damping coefficient. The pitch response was extracted from the experimental time series in a periodic regular wave for two different wave heights (1 cm and 3 cm). In addition, the viscous damping coefficient was calculated from the FDT result and fluid forces, obtained from WAMIT, are incorporated into the final response of the rotor. Finally, a comparative study based on experimental and numerical results (WAMIT & OrcaFlex) was performed to confirm the performance reliability of the designed rotor.
Five parameters such as the entrance size of the front wall, conduit size, wave period, wave height and the width of water pool were selected to estimate the inflow rate, which is basic and essential input data to design seawater exchange breakwater with a submerged mound by conducting hydraulic model experiments. In the results of multiple regression analysis, log-log equation showed a good agreement rather than linear equation and the estimation of inflow rate was well done with only two parameters except entrance size of the front wall, wave period and the width of water pool. Finally, non-dimensional flow rate equation is derived.
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is defined as the interaction phenomena of electromagnetic waves scattered from a large structure or complex terrain. In this study, the propagation of linear wave is modeled with ray theory, direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), and some classical theories on flat plates. The wave physics of reflection, refraction, and diffraction are simulated for the investigation of front and back scattering of the one-dimensional plane wave from a tower with ray theory and DSMC, respectively. The effect of rotating disk idealized from the real wind-turbine blades is modeled with a simplified version of the classical electromagnetic theory as well as DSMC based on the ray theory.
The performance of a wave energy converter (WEC) that uses the rolling motion of a partially submerged pendulum plate in front of a quay wall was analyzed. The wave exciting moment and hydrodynamic moment were obtained using a matched eigenfunction expansion method (MEEM) based on the linear potential theory, and then the roll motion response of a pendulum plate, time averaged extracted power, and efficiency were investigated. The optimal PTO damping coefficient was suggested to give the optimal extracted power. The peak value of the optimal extracted power occurs at the resonant frequency. The resonant peak and its width increase as the submergence depth of the pendulum plate decreases and thickness of the pendulum plate increases. An increase in the wave incidence angle reduces the efficiency of the wave energy converter. In addition, the WEC using a rolling pendulum plate contributes not only to the extraction of the wave energy, but also to a reduction in the waves reflected from the quay wall, which helps to stabilize ships going near the quay wall.

In this paper, a study on beam synthesis technique of conformal array was performed. It is applied to various radar systems that can perform beam steering without deterioration of performance due to beam steering in a general linear arrangement. Unlike the beam synthesis technique in the planar linear array, the conformal array has a radiation element located on a curved surface, so it is necessary to compensate for a difference in length from the radaation element to the wave front surface. In addition, by calculating the offset angle for each radiation element and applying it during actual synthesis, it was possible to predict an accurate beam pattern. In this paper, length compensation and offset angle were calculated and applied to beam pattern synthesis to perform beam pattern comparison, and performance was compared through mathematical analysis.
This paper presents the effect of numerical parameters, such as grid size and grid ratio, on the outflow hydrograph of a unit-width plane in the linear Muskingum-Cunge method. The numerical results depend on Courant number C and cell Reynolds number D, two physically and numerically meaningful parameters. As C approache 1 and D increases, the numerical dispersion-relating oscillations are difficult to occur. The numerical oscillations occur in the front of a propagating wave for C < 1, while smaller oscillations occur behind the wave for C > 1 due to the numerical diffusion effect. For a plane with a small value of characteristic reach length L (e.g., a steep plane), the numerical solution of the Muskingum-Cunge method is similar to that of the kinematic wave method, which shows no wave attenuation. However, for a plane with a large value of L (e.g., a mild plane), the Muskingum-Cunge method leads to the diffusion waves which are essentially independent of the Courant number. Accordingly, the Muskingum-Cunge method will be suited for the routing of the catchment with relatively mild slopes.

The interaction of oblique incident waves with a porous dual semi-cylindrical structure is investigated under the assumption of linear potential theory. The porous dual semi-cylindrical structure consists of two concentric bottom-mounted cylindrical structures that are porous in front half and transparent in back half. By changing porosity, gap, and wave characteristics(wave frequencies, incidence angle), the wave blocking performance as well as the wave loads and the wave run-up are obtained. As a convenient measure of overall wave blocking performance, the root mean square(R.M.S.) of the wave elevation in a sheltered region is used. It is found that the porous semi-cylindrical structure may significantly reduce the wave response in a sheltered region and the wave forces decrease largely compared to the impermeable structure. The dual structure is more effective in reducing the wave response in a sheltered region than the mono type in the region of high frequencies.
Bragg reflection of nonlinear waves is simulated by a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT). The developed NWT was based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM) with potential theory and the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) time marching scheme with Runge-Kutta 4th-order time integration. A spatial variation of wave elevations and their Fourier amplitudes of each component are compared to investigate the effect of sea bottom ripples and their relative heights. The incident waves over an undulated sea bottom are partially reflected and changed to partial standing waves due to Bragg reflection. The present results are verified with linear calculations and experimental data. It is found that the 1st-order wave component is mainly affected by Bragg reflection and its spatial modulation is significant in front of the bottom ripples.

In this study, the effects of the wave field changes due to the coastal structure on the hydrodynamic performance of the OWC wave energy, converter are analyzed using a three-dimensional numerical wave tank technique (NWT). The OWC device is simulated numerically by introducing a linear pressure drop model, considering the coupling effect between the turbine and the OWC chamber in the time domain. The flow distribution around the chamber is different due to the change of reflection characteristics depending on the consideration of the breakwater model. The wave energy captured from the breakwater is spatially distributed on the plane of the front of the breakwater, and the converted pneumatic power increased when concentrated in front of the chamber. The change of the standing wave distribution is repeated according to the relationship between the incident wavelength and the length of the breakwater, and the difference in energy conversion performance of the OWC was confirmed.
