The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) established a new standard of the absorbed dose to water in LINAC X-ray beams. To confirm the equivalence of the new standard with other national metrology institutes (NMIs), a bilateral comparison study of the absorbed dose to water in high energy X-ray beams was performed between the KRISS and the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ). The comparison was made in-directly. Three transfer chambers were calibrated in the high energy X-ray beams by both laboratories and the calibration coefficients were compared. The average ratios of the calibration coefficients of the three transfer chambers obtained by the KRISS to those obtained by the NMIJ were 1.004, 1.006, 1.006, 1.007 for 6, 10, 15 and 18 MV X-ray beams, respectively. The calibration coefficients obtained at the KRISS were higher than those at the NMIJ but they were in good agreement within the expanded uncertainty of 1.0% (k = 2). The results of this study will be used as the evidence for the KRISS standard being comparable with those of other NMIs, temporarily, in the interim period up to finalizing a key comparison study, BIPM.RI(I)-K6 managed by the Consultative Committee for Ionizing Radiation.

Recent advances in radio frequency (RF) power transfer provide a promising technology to power sensor nodes. Adoption of mobile chargers to replenish the nodes' energy has recently attracted a lot of attention and the mobility assisted energy replenishment provides predictable and sustained power service. In this paper, we study the joint optimization of mobile charging and data gathering in sensor networks. A wireless multi-functional vehicle (WMV) is employed and periodically moves along specified trajectories, charge the sensors and gather the sensed data via one-hop communication. The objective of this paper is to maximize the uplink throughput by optimally allocating the time for the downlink wireless energy transfer by the WMV and the uplink transmissions of different sensors. We consider two scenarios where the WMV moves in a straight line and around a circle. By time discretization, the optimization problem is formulated as a 0-1 programming problem. We obtain the upper and lower bounds of the problem by converting the original 0-1 programming problem into a linear programming problem and then obtain the optimal solution by using branch and bound algorithm. We further prove that the network throughput is independent of the WMV's velocity under certain conditions. Performance of our proposed algorithm is evaluated through extensive simulations. The results validate the correctness of our proposed theorems and demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms two baseline algorithms in achieved throughput under different settings.
The reflood test data from the rod bundle heat transfer (RBHT) test facility showed that the grids in the upper portion of the rod bundle could become wet well before the arrival of the quench front and that the sizes of liquid droplets downstream of a wet grid could not be predicted by the droplet breakup models for a dry grid. To investigate the water droplet generation from a wet grid spacer, a viscous linear temporal instability model of the water sheet issuing from the trailing edge of the grid with the surrounding steam up-flow is developed in this study. The Orr-Sommerfeld equations along with appropriate boundary conditions for the flow are solved using Chebyshev series expansions and the Tau-Galerkin projection method. The effects of several physical parameters on the water sheet oscillation are studied by determining the variation of the temporal growth rate with the wavenumber. It is found that a larger relative steam velocity to water velocity has a tendency to destabilize the water sheet with increased dynamic pressure. On the other hand, a larger ratio of steam boundary layer to the half water sheet thickness has a stabilizing effect on the water sheet oscillation. Droplet diameters downstream of the spacer grid predicted by the present model are found to compare reasonably well with the data obtained at the RBHT test facility as well as with other data recently reported in the literature.
This study investigates a design optimization of a rotating two-pass rectangular cooling channel with staggered arrays of pin-fins. The radial basis neural network method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport turbulent model. The ratio of the diameter to height of the pin-fins and the ratio of the streamwise spacing between the pin-fins to height of the pin-fin are selected as design variables. The optimization problem has been defined as a minimization of the objective function, which is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. Results are presented for streamlines, velocity vector fields, and contours of Nusselt numbers, friction coefficients, and turbulent kinetic energy. These results show how fluid flow in a two-pass square cooling channel evolves a converted secondary flows due to Coriolis force, staggered arrays of pin-fins, and a $180^{\circ}$ turn region. These results describe how the fluid flow affects surface heat transfer. The Coriolis force induces heat transfer discrepancy between leading and trailing surfaces, having higher Nusselt number on the leading surface in the second pass while having lower Nusselt number on the trailing surface. Dean vortices generated in $180^{\circ}$ turn region augment heat transfer in the turning region and in the upstream region of the second pass. As the result of optimization, in comparison with the reference geometry, thermal performance of the optimum geometry shows the improvement by 30.5%. Through the optimization, the diameter of pin-fin increased by 14.9% and the streamwise distance between pin-fins increased by 32.1%. And, the value of objective function decreased by 18.1%.
In this paper, we investigate the characteristics of power amplifiers and simplified memoryless non-linear power amplifier models for energy efficient communication system. First, we present the transfer function of GaAs FET (Gallium Arsenide Field Effect Transistor) that is widely used for high power amplifier. From those investigations, we introduce the instantaneous efficiencies and methods of amplification by assuming that the saturated current is constant, while perfect linearity is exploited under knee voltage. Then, we discuss four non-linear power amplifier models in a baseband signal processing. Finally, we explain the specified total power consumption model in a base station to achieve the resonable analysis for energy efficient communication.
Fully Ceramic Microencapsulated (FCM) fuel is emerging advanced fuel material for the future nuclear reactors. The fuel pellet in the FCM fuel is composed of matrix and a large number of TRistructural-ISOtopic (TRISO) fuel particles which are randomly dispersed in the SiC matrix. The minimum layer thickness in a TRISO fuel particle is on the order of 10-5 m, and the length of the FCM pellet is on the order of 10-2 m. Hence, the heat transfer in the FCM pellet is a multi-scale phenomenon. In this study, three multi-scale heat conduction models including the Multi-region Layered (ML) model, Multi-region Non-layered (MN) model and Homogeneous model for FCM pellet were constructed. In the ML model, the random distributed TRISO fuel particles and coating layers are completely built. While the TRISO fuel particles with coating layers are homogenized in the MN model and the whole fuel pellet is taken as the homogenous material in the Homogeneous model. Taking the results by the ML model as the benchmark, the abilities of the MN model and Homogenous model to predict the maximum and average temperature were discussed. It was found that the MN model and the Homogenous model greatly underestimate the temperature of TRISO fuel particles. The reason is mainly that the conventional equivalent thermal conductivity (ETC) models do not take the internal heat source into account and are not suitable for the TRISO fuel particle. Then the improved ETCs considering internal heat source were derived. With the improved ETCs, the MN model is able to capture the peak temperature as well as the average temperature at a wide range of the linear powers (165 W/cm~ 415 W/cm) and the packing fractions (20%-50%). With the improved ETCs, the Homogenous model is better to predict the average temperature at different linear powers and packing fractions, and able to predict the peak temperature at high packing fractions (45%-50%).
During the last decade, the exploration of nanoscale device and circuitry based on molecules has gained increasing interest. In parallel with this, considerable effort is being devoted to the development of molecular photonic/electronic materials based on various porphyrin arrays. This involves light as an input/output signal and excitation energy migration as a mechanism for signal transmission. Absorption of a photon at the light collector end of the porphyrin array yields the excited state, which migrates among the intervening pigments until reaching the emitter, whereupon another photon is emitted. As a consequence, it is relevant to understand the excitation energy transfer (EET) processes occurring in various forms of porphyrin arrays for the applications as artificial light harvesting arrays and molecular photonic/electronic wires. Since the excitonic (dipole) and electronic (conjugation) couplings between the adjacent porphyrin moieties in porphyrin arrays govern the EET processes, we have characterized the EET rates of various forms of multiporphyrin arrays (linear, cyclic, and box) based on various time-resolved spectroscopic measurements. We believe that our observations provide a platform for further development of molecular photonic/electronic materials based on porphyrin arrays.

Asphalt pavement accounts for more than 90% of the total pavement in Korea. Pavement is most widely constructed among construction structures. The heat transfer characteristics (Thermophysical Properties) of the asphalt pavement cause the heat island effect in downtown areas. An increasing asphalt surface temperature is one of the major causes of damage to asphalt pavement. This study examined the heat transfer characteristic factors according to solar energy accumulation in an asphalt mixture. The specimens (WC-2 & PA-13, Recycled aggregate used WC-2) used in the experiment were compacted with a Gyratory Compactor. The thermo-physical properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal emissivity) and solar energy accumulation were evaluated. The thermal accumulation and HFM tests revealed a 1.2- to 2.0-fold difference. This indicates that the thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture pavement changes with the accumulation of solar energy. An analysis of the correlation of thermal conductivity according to the surface temperature of the asphalt mixture showed that WC-2 was logarithmic, and PA-13 was linear. Experiments on the heat transfer characteristics of asphalt pavement that can be used for thermal failure modeling of asphalt were conducted.

Nacelle anemometers are mounted on wind-turbine nacelles behind blade roots to measure the free-stream wind speed projected onto the wind turbine for control purposes. However, nacelle anemometers measure the transformed wind speed that is due to the wake effect caused by the blades' rotation and the nacelle geometry, etc. In this paper, we derive the Nacelle Transfer Function (NTF) to calibrate the nacelle wind speed to the free-stream wind speed, as required to carry out the performance test of wind turbines according to the IEC 61400-12-2 Wind-Turbine Standard. For the reference free-stream wind data, we use the Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) measurement at the Shinan wind power plant located on the Bigeumdo Island shoreline. To improve the simple linear regression NTF, we derive the multiple nonlinear regression NTF. The standard error of the wind speed was found to have decreased by a factor of 9.4, whereas the mean of the power-output residual distribution decreased by 6.5 when the 2-parameter NTF was used instead of the 1-parameter NTF.

Infra-gravity waves (IGWs) with a period of 1~3 minutes are a factor that directly influences the motion analysis of moored ships inside a harbor and longshore sediment transport analysis. If significant levels of IGWs from far seas are transferred to a harbor and amplified, they may cause downtime of large ships and induce economic loss. In this study, transfer characteristics of the IGWs intruding from outside to inside Pohang New Harbor were analyzed using statistical analysis and transfer function of wave data measured at both outside and inside the harbor for around 5 years. Transfer characteristic analysis was limited to events where IGWs had wave heights above 0.1 m. The wave height distribution of inside the harbor was similar to that of outside the harbor, while the wave period variance of the former was larger than that of the latter. The parameters of the transfer function was optimally estimated according to each event. The estimated average RMS error of the wave height inside the harbor was around 0.013 m. The estimated parameters had a strong correlation with the linear combination information of IGW wave height, period, and direction (R = 0.95). The transfer function suggested in this study can quickly and easily estimate information on IGWs inside the harbor using IGW information predicted beforehand, and is expected to reduce damage due to unexpected restrictions on harbor usage.
