An analytical study was conducted to characterize the fatigue crack growth behavior of pre-cracked aluminum plates repaired with asymmetric bonded composite patch. For single-sided repairs, due to the asymmetry and the presence of out-of-plane bending, crack front shape would become skewed curvilinear started from a uniform through-crack profile, as observed from previous studies. In this study, the fatigue analysis of single-sided repairs considering crack front shape development was conducted by implementing three-dimensional successive finite element method coupled with linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) concept, which enables the growing crack front to be directly traced and modeled in a step by step way. Through conducting present analysis technique, crack path of the patched plate as well as the fatigue life was evaluated with sufficient accuracy. The analytical predictions of both the crack front shape evolution and the fatigue life were in good agreement with the experimental observations.
In this study, free vibration analysis of an edge cracked multilayered symmetric sandwich beams made of functionally graded materials are investigated. Modelling of the cracked structure is based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics theory. Material properties of the functionally graded beams change in the thickness direction according to the power and exponential laws. To represent functionally graded symmetric sandwich beams more realistic, fifty layered beam is considered. Composition of each layer is different although each layer is isotropic and homogeneous. The considered problem is carried out within the Timoshenko first order shear deformation beam theory by using finite element method. A MATLAB code developed to calculate natural frequencies for clamped and simply supported conditions. The obtained results are compared with published studies and excellent agreement is observed. In the study, the effects of crack location, depth of the crack, power law index and slenderness ratio on the natural frequencies are investigated.
A theoretical exploration for determining the characteristic length of the cohesive zone for a double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen under mode I loading was conducted. Two traction-separation laws were studied: (i) a law with only a linear elastic stage from zero to full traction strength; and (ii) a bilinear traction law illustrating a progressive softening stage. Two analytical solutions were derived for the first law, which fit well into two existing solution groups. A transcendental equation was derived for the bilinear traction law, and a graphical method was presented to identify the resultant cohesive zone length. The study using the bilinear traction law enabled the theoretical investigation of the individual effects of cohesive law parameters (i.e., strength, stiffness, and fracture energy) on the cohesive zone length. Correlations between the theoretical and finite element (FE) results were assessed. Effects of traction law parameters on the cohesive zone length were discussed.
In this research, important mechanical characteristics of Compliant Press-Fit Pin and PHT are studied through the analysis of deformation mechanisms of Press-Fit Pin and by elastic-plastic finite element method. The direct data for the optimal design of pin was obtained without interfere with the criterion on insertion force and retention force. Also, the insertion force and retention force of new type pin were measured by precision type tensile testing machine and it revealed good agreement with analytical results. In conclusion, it is believed that above results will contribute satisfactorily to the practical design of Press-Fit Pin.
In this paper, we propose a new deformable model based on non-linear elasticity, anisotropic behavior and the finite element method and developed the high-speed controller for haptic control. The proposed controller is based on the PCI/FPGA technology, which can calculate the real position and transmit the force data to device rapidly, The haptic system is composed of 6DOF force display device, high-speed controller and HIR library for 3D graphic deformation algorithm & haptic rendering algorithm. The developed system will be used on constructing the dynamical virtual environment. we demonstrate the relevance of this approach for the real-time simulating deformations of elastic objects. To show the efficiency of our system, we designed simulation program of force-reflecting, As the result of the experiment, we found that the controller has much higher resolution than some other controllers.
This paper provides the evaluation method for the pressure vessel with internal wall-thinning defect, which is based on ASME design criteria. Pressure vessel has wall-thinning partially and patch reinforcement has been attached for reliable operating. However, present partial wall thinning could be through wall thinning at the next inspection time with present corrosion progress speed. Therefore safety margin was calculated for various conditions from present wall-thinning condition to additive patch reinforced condition via two-dimensional and three-dimensional, geometrically linear FE analyses using elastic materials.
In this paper, the rolling-sliding contact problem of a layered semi-infinite solid compressed by a rigid surface is solved by finite element method based on the elasto-plastic theory. The purpose of this paper is to present the standard that is needed the later design. For this analysis, the principal parameters are layer thickness. Young's modulus ratio of layer and substrate and friction coefficient. In particular, this paper is interested in effect that layer thickness have influence upon displacement and shear and tensile stress at interface. For the layered material, the layer and the substrate behave elastic and linear-strain hardening respectively. For law friction, a relatively thin layer reduce the undesired maximum tensial stress but, for high friction, act contrary to the case of low friction.
The concrete fatigue analysis can be performed with the use of fracture mechanics. The fracture mechanics defines the fatigue crack propagation as the relationship of crack growth rate and stress intensity factor. In contrast to metal, the application of fracture mechanics to concrete is more complicated and therefore many authors have introduced empirical expressions using Paris law. The topic of this paper is development of a new prediction of fatigue crack propagation for concrete using rheological-dynamical analogy (RDA) and finite element method (FEM) in the frame of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). The static and cyclic fatigue three-point bending tests on notched beams are considered. Verification of the proposed approach was performed on the test results taken from the literature. The comparison between the theoretical model and experimental results indicates that the model proposed in this paper is valid to predict the crack propagation in flexural fatigue of concrete.

First introduced in 2016, the dynamic foundation model is an interesting topic in which the foundation is described close to reality by taking into account the influence of the foundation mass in the calculation of oscillation and is an important parameter that should be considered. In this paper, a follow-up investigation is conducted with the object of the Mindlin plate on a nonlinear dynamic foundation under moving loads. The base model includes nonlinear elastic springs, linear Pasternak parameters, viscous damping, and foundation mass. The problem is formulated by the finite element analysis and solved by the Newmark-β method. The displacement results at the center of the plate are analyzed and discussed with the change of various parameters including the nonlinear stiffness, the foundation mass, and the load velocity. The dynamic response of the plate sufficiently depends on the foundation mass.
