  • Recently, a new kind of optical multiplexing called optical-receiver-mode (ORM)-division multiplexing (ORMDM) has been proposed, in which an optical channel is a linear sum of ORM subchannels modulated independently. Using coherent-optical (CO) techniques, it has been reported that COORMDM communication systems can have very high spectral efficiencies (SEs). To estimate the SEs of CO-ORMDM communication systems, we introduce a new method of crosstalk analysis. Using this method, we can allocate quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) codes and QAM step sizes unevenly over ORM subchannels to obtain higher SEs. With 50 Gaussian ORMs, we obtain a SE of up to 15.29 bit s-1 Hz-1.

  • Quadtree, which is a hierarchical data structure, is a very important data structure to represent binary images. The linear quadtree representation as a way to store a quadtree is efficient to save space compared with other representations. Therefore, it has been widely studied to develop efficient algorithms to execute operations related with quadtrees. The window operation is one of important geometry operations in image processing, which extracts a sub-image indicated by a window in the image. In this paper, we present an algorithm to perform the window operation of binary images represented by quadtrees, using three-dimensional $n{\times}n{\times}n$ processors on RMESH(Reconfigurable MESH). This algorithm has constant-time complexity by using efficient basic operations to route the locational codes of quardtree on the hierarchical structure of $n{\times}n{\times}n$ RMESH.

  • This paper proposes a novel algorithm for hybrid lossless audio coding, which employs an integer wavelet transform and a linear prediction model. The proposed algorithm divides the input signal into flames of a proper length, decorrelates the framed data using the integer wavelet transform and linear prediction and finally entropy-codes the frame data. In particular, the adaptive Golomb-Rice coding method used for the entropy coding selects an optimal option which gives the best compression efficiency. Since the proposed algorithm uses integer operations, it significantly improves the computation speed in comparison with an algorithm using real or floating-point operations. When the coding algorithm is implemented in hardware, the system complexity as well as the power consumption is remarkably reduced. Finally, because each frame is independently coded and is byte-aligned with respect to the frame header, it is convenient to move, search, and edit the coded, compressed data.

  • Ternary sequences are digital codes consisting of discrete values -1, 0, and 1 only. They are advantageous in that the correlation can be carried out using additions only. Also, they feature an ideal circular autocorrelation function, but in channel characterization tasks, the usual requirement is that the linear autocorrelation function be ideal, i.e., a Kronecker delta function. In this article, we consider two approaches to improving their linear autocorrelation or crosscorrelation properties: one is an inverse filtering method with thresholding, and the other is a singular value decomposition (SVD) method. Both methods are simulated under noisy circumstances. The inverse filtering method resulted in an improvement in peak sidelobe level of about 11 dB at an SNR of 30 dB, and the SVD method showed similar performances, albeit more sensitive to noise depending on the singular value selection strategy.

  • Code-Division Multiple-Access(CDMA) allows several users simultaneous access to a common channel by assigning a distinct pseudonoise sequence called spectrum code to each user. Each user in a CDMA system uses a assigned spectrum code to modulate their signal. Choosing the codes used to modulate the signal is very important in the performance of CDMA systems. The best performance will occur when there is good separation between the signal of a desired user and the signals of other users. The receiver synchronizes the code to recover the data. The use of an independent code allows multiple users to access the same frequency band at the same time. In this paper we propose a generalized model of non-linear binary sequence using trace function and analyze cross-correlation of these sequences. These sequences with low correlation, large linear span and large family size, in a direct-sequence spread spectrum communication system, help to minimize multiple access interference, increase security degree of system and enlarge user number.

  • Pre-stressed concrete poles are among the supporting systems used to support transmission lines. It is essential to protect transmission line systems from harsh environmental attacks such as downburst wind events. Typically, these poles are designed to resist synoptic wind loading as current codes do not address high wind events in the form of downbursts. In the current study, the behavior of guyed pre-stressed concrete Transmission lines is studied under downburst loads. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first investigation to assess the behaviour of guyed pre-stressed concrete poles under downburst events. Due to the localized nature of those events, identifying the critical locations and parameters leading to peak forces on the poles is a challenging task. To overcome this challenge, an in-house built numerical model is developed incorporating the following: (1) a three-dimensional downburst wind field previously developed and validated using computational fluid dynamics simulations; (2) a computationally efficient analytical technique previously developed and validated to predict the non-linear behaviour of the conductors including the effects of the pretension force, sagging, insulator's stiffness and the non-uniform distribution of wind loads, and (3) a non-linear finite element model utilized to simulate the structural behaviour of the guyed pre-stressed concrete pole considering material nonlinearity. A parametric study is conducted by varying the downbursts locations relative to the guyed pole while considering three different span values. The results of this parametric study are utilized to identify critical downburst configurations leading to peak straining actions on the pole and the guys. This is followed by comparing the obtained critical load cases to new load cases proposed to ASCE-74 loading committee. A non-linear failure analysis is then conducted for the three considered guyed pre-stressed concrete transmission line systems to determine the downburst jet velocity at which the pole systems fail.

  • Seismic design of a building is usually performed by using the linear static procedure. However, the actual behavior of the building subjected to earthquake is inelastic and dynamic in nature. Therefore, inelastic dynamic analysis is required to evaluate the safety of the structure designed by the current design codes. For the validation, a RC special moment resisting frame building was chosen and designed by IBC 2003 representing new codes. Maximum plastic rotation and dissipated energy of some selected members were calculated for examining if the inelastic behavior of the building follows the intention of the code, and drift demand were calculated as well for checking if the building well satisfies the design drift limit. In addition, the effect of including internal moment resisting frames (non lateral resisting system) on analyses results was investigated. As a result of this study, the building designed by IBC 2003 showed the inelastic behavior intended in the code and satisfied the design drift limit. Furthermore, the internal moment resisting frames should be included in the analytical model as they affect the results of seismic analyses significantly.
