  • This paper reports the design of a multiwavelength fiber laser source that utilizes a linear cavity of hybrid Brillouin/Erbium fiber laser (BEFL). The output power, threshold power and free running cavity modes were investigated against the pump powers. The structure exhibited low threshold operation of 4 mW at 2.3 mW injected Brillouin pump power. The optimization of Brillouin pump wavelength, power and Erbium gain led to a maximum possible number of channels generated. Simultaneous and stable operation of 21 channels with 10.88 GHz channels spacing were obtained from this architecture at 1 mW injected Brillouin pump power and 90 m W Erbium doped fiber pump power in the 1555 nm region.

  • A new cavity configuration for passive mode locking of fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated. It consists of a dichroic mirror at one end of the cavity, and a nonlinear loop mirror, which is a Sagnac loop, at the other end. The experimental observations are described for both Er-doped fiber laser and Nd-doped fiber laser. laser.

  • The impact of booster section length made from passive erbium-doped fiber (EDF) on the L-band multiwavelength Brillouin-Erbium fiber laser (MBEFL) is studied experimentally in this paper. The influence on the performance of MBEFL in term of number of generated Stokes lines, tuning range and lasing threshold were investigated. A comparison was made between MBEFL without a booster section and with booster sections of different lengths. Through comparative study and at fixed BP power and 100mW of 1480 pump power, longer passive EDF length of 5m exhibits the highest average number of Stokes lines of 23 with tuning range of 14nm. In contrast, shorter passive EDF length of 1m shows the highest tuning range of 17nm and an average number of 21 Stokes lines.

  • Quenched dye laser (QDL), which operates with relaxation oscillation mode, is one of the most powerful source for ultra-short pulse light. In this paper, the output characteristics of QDL is theoretically analyzed by a computer simulation. The QDL is assumed that the laser dye is Rhodamine 6G which has the oscillation wavelength of 590 nrn and that the active length is 5 mm and that the pumping source is XeCllaser which has oscillation wavelength of 308 nm. It is revealed ilim the pulse width of short cavity dye laser reduced less than 1/100 than pumping pulse duration and has the linear relationship with spatial width of pumping beam approximately. In addition, it is revealed that the short cavity dye laser is a powerful candidate of pulse width variable light source, which is adjusted by spatial size of pumping beam_ beam_

  • In this paper, design feature and operation characteristics of compact Ruby laser for plasma diagonostics are described. A linear Xe flashlamp and a single elliptical cavity are adopted as optical pumping system. With charging energy of 484J, the maximum output energy of 170mJ, laser pulse width $110{\mu}s$, and slope efficiency 0.09% were obtained. If Q-switch system is added to this laser, we suppose this laser will be quite enough for diagonizing plasma.

  • A new laser Doppler velocimeter employing a $CO_2$ laser has been developed by using its photoacoustic effect. A change in the pressure of a discharge, induced by mixing of a returned wave with an originally existing wave inside the cavity, is employed to detect the Doppler frequency shift. We found that a Doppler frequency shift as much as 34 KHz was detected, and also a good linear relationship between the velocity and the Doppler frequency shift was obtained.

  • A single-and dual-wavelength switchable polarized Yb-doped double-clad fiber laser around 1120 nm based on a pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) is demonstrated. The polarization-maintaining (PM) linear cavity is composed of a double clad PM Yb-doped fiber (YDF) and a pair of PM FBGs. The laser can operate in stable dual-wavelength or wavelength-switching modes due to the polarization hole burning (PHB) and the spatial hole burning (SHB) enhanced by the PM linear cavity. In dual-wavelength operation, the two orthogonally polarized wavelengths are centered at 1118.912 nm and 1119.152 nm, with an interval of 0.24 nm and a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 35 dB. The maximum output power is 14.67 W when the launched LD pump is 24 W corresponding to an optical efficiency of 61.1%. The lasing lines switchover may be realized by adjusting the polarization controller (PC) fitted in the cavity. The two single-wavelengths are 1118.912 nm and 1119.152 nm. When the injected LD pump is 24 W, the highest output powers are 7.68 W and 8.64 W corresponding to optical efficiencies of 32% and 36% respectively. The spectral linewidth of the lasing lines are 0.075 nm and 0.07 nm, and the average numerical values of PER aredB and 19.9 dB, respectively.

  • We have theoretically analyzed and experimentally observed the effects of wavelength dependent birefringence inside a laser cavity on the output characteristics of fiber lasers with a figure eight geometry. The spectral and polarization characteristics of fiber lasers are found to be very susceptible to the resultant birefringence composed of the intrinsically existing wavelength dependent birefringence and the externally induced birefringences inside the fiber. For the variation of twist-induced birefringence inside the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, the laser output power and center wave-length of continuous wave lasers change periodically, but the polarization characteristics remains nearly unchanged. The changes of the birefringence inside the linear loop has little effect on the spectral characteristics but changes the polarization properties such as the polarization direction.

  • We experimentally demonstrated a novel wavelength-swept laser using a cascaded Raman gain around 1310 nm. A 1064/1310 wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) coupler and coupled fiber Bragg gratings mirrors at 1064, 1117, 1175, 1240 nm are effectively used to increase the power efficiency in a laser ring cavity with highly non-linear fiber (HNLF) of 2 km. Linear wavelength sweeping is demonstrated with the 100 Hz triangular driving signal to fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter (FFP-TF) around the 1310 nm region. The measured sweeping range and output power were 27 nm and 2.1 mW, respectively, which are suitable for optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging.

  • In this paper we propose a wavelength-switchable fiber ring laser that employs a polarization-dependent fiber band stop filter. The fiber filter was fabricated by inscribing a long-period fiber grating on a high birefringent fiber. Dual-wavelength switching operation was accomplished by controlling the rotatable linear polarizer which rotated the polarization plane of the light circulating through the fiber laser cavity. The amplitude variation of both laser lines was measured to be less than 0.5 dB and the signal-to-amplified spontaneous emission ratio was more than 55 dB.
