In recent years there are many plate bending elements that emerged for solving both thin and thick plates. The main features of these elements are that they are based on mix formulation interpolation with discrete collocation constraints. These elements passed the patch test for mix formulation and performed well for linear analysis of thin and thick plates. In this paper a member of this family of elements, namely, the Discrete Reissner-Mindlin (DRM) is further extended and developed to analyze both thin and thick plates with geometric nonlinearity. The Von K$\acute{a}$rm$\acute{a}$n's large displacement plate theory based on Lagrangian coordinate system is used. The Hu-Washizu variational principle is employed to formulate the stiffness matrix of the geometrically Nonlinear Discrete Reissner-Mindlin (NDRM). An iterative-incremental procedure is implemented to solve the nonlinear equations. The element is then tested for plates with simply supported and clamped edges under uniformly distributed transverse loads. The results obtained using the geometrically NDRM element is then compared with the results of available analytical solutions. It has been observed that the NDRM results agreed well with the analytical solutions results. Therefore, it is concluded that the NDRM element is both reliable and efficient in analyzing thin and thick plates with geometric non-linearity.
The required connection ductility has been evaluated, considering geometric, material and connection nonlinearity, for 6-story unbraced and 20-story braced steel structures subjected to ultimate lateral load. For material nonlinearity, section moment-curvature relationship and member stiffness matrix have been derived utilizing fiber model and linear flexibility distribution model. In 6-story structure with semi-rigid connections for rigid connection, the required connection ductility is less than that for rigid connection. In 20-story structure, the required connection ductility for semi-rigid connection is almost the same as that for shear connection and the required ductility for rigid connection is larger than that for semi-rigid or shear connection.

Stiffened plates are commonly used as a component of ship's structures. Most frequently symmetrically stiffened plates are used, but some of stern structures and any specified parts are often constructed with eccentrically stiffened plates. The problems of these eccentrically stiffened plates have been studied rarely, and the results of eccentricity effect of eccentrically stiffened plates are not available. This paper deals with the analysis of eccentrically stiffened plates in the linear elastic range. The derivation of the stiffness matrix was carried out by finite element method for which the isoparametric element was adopted. To show the effect of eccentricity, the deflection at the center under the uniformly distributed and the concentrated load of simply supported and clamped plate models are computed respectively in accordance with the eccentricity of the stiffener. As shown in the results of computations, the eccentricity effect of concentrated load case is greater than that of distributed load case and that of simply supported boundary condition is greater than that of clamped boundary condition. The higher eccentricity of stiffener is, the smaller the effect of stiffener becomes, therefore scantling of eccentrically stiffened plates should be considerably greater than those of symmetrically stiffened plates.
A locally varying temperature field or a mixture of two or more different materials can cause local variation of elasticity properties of a beam. In this paper, a new Euler-Bernoulli beam element with varying Young's modulus along its longitudinal axis is presented. The influence of axial forces according to the linearized 2nd order beam theory is considered, as well. The stiffness matrix of this element contains the transfer constants which depend on Young's modulus variation and on axial forces. Occurrence of the polynomial variation of Young's modulus has been assumed. Such approach can be also used for smooth local variation of Young's modulus. The critical loads of the straight slender columns were studied using the new beam element. The influence of position of the local Young's modulus variation and its type (such as linear, quadratic, etc.) on the critical load value and rate of convergence was investigated. The obtained results based on the new beam element were compared with ANSYS solutions, where the number of elements gradually increased. Our results show significant influence of the locally varying Young's modulus on the critical load value and the convergence rate.
Stiff and light fibre reinforced composites as used in air- and space-craft applications tend to high sound emission. Therefore, the damping properties are essential for the entire structural and acoustic engineering. Viscous damping is an established and reasonably linear model of the dissipation behaviour. Commonly, it is assumed to be isotropic and constant over all modes. For anisotropic materials it depends on the fibre orientation as well as the elastic and thermal material properties. To portray the orthogonal anisotropic behaviour, a model for unidirectional fibre reinforced plastics (frp) has been developed based on the classical laminate theory by ADAMS and BACON starting in 1973. Their approach includes three damping coefficients - for longitudinal damping in fibre direction, damping transversal to the fibres and shear based dissipation. The damping of a laminate is then accumulated layer wise including the anisotropic stiffness. So far, the model has been applied mainly to thermoset matrix materials. In this study, an experimental parameter estimation for different thermoplastic frp with angle ply and cross ply layups was carried out by measuring free vibrations of cantilever beams. The results show potential and limits of the ADAMS/BACON damping criterion. In addition, a possibility of modelling the anisotropic damping is shown. The implementation in standard FEA software is used to study the influence of boundary conditions on the damping properties and numerically estimate the radiated sound power of thin-walled frp parts.

The optimal design parameters of a dynamic absorber (DA) in a machine body (that is considered as a rigid body) are discussed in this paper. The bounce and rotation motions of the rigid body have been controlled passively by a DA, which consists of a mass and a spring. The rigid body is subjected to a harmonically excited force and supported by linear springs at both ends. To define the motion of a rigid body with a DA, the equation of motion was expressed in the third-order matrix form. To define the optimal design conditions of a DA, the reduction of dynamic characteristics, represented by the amplitudes of bounce and rotation, and the transmitted powers, were evaluated and discussed. The level of reduction was found to be highly dependent on the location and spring stiffness of the DA.
Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) has been developed by applying stress analysis to determine the stress intensity factor (SIF, K). The finite element method (FEM) is widely used as a standard tool for evaluating the SIF for various crack configurations. The prediction accuracy can be achieved by applying an adaptive Delaunay triangulation combined with a FEM. The solution can be solved using either direct or iterative solvers. This work adopts the element-by-element preconditioned conjugate gradient (EBE-PCG) iterative solver into an adaptive FEM to solve the solution to heal problem size constraints that exist when direct solution techniques are applied. It can avoid the formation of a global stiffness matrix of a finite element model. Several numerical experiments reveal that the present method is simple, fast, and efficient compared to conventional sparse direct solvers. The optimum convergence criterion for two-dimensional LEFM analysis is studied. In this paper, four sample problems of a two-edge cracked plate, a center cracked plate, a single-edge cracked plate, and a compact tension specimen is used to evaluate the accuracy of the prediction of the SIF values. Finally, the efficiency of the present iterative solver is summarized by comparing the computational time for all cases.
After a disaster like the catastrophic earthquake, the government have to use rapid assessment of the condition (or damage) of bridges, buildings and other infrastructures is mandatory for rapid feedbacks, rescue and post-event management. Many domain schemes based on the measured vibration computations, including least squares estimation and neural fuzzy logic control, have been studied and found to be effective for online/offline monitoring of structural damage. Traditional strategies require all external stimulus data (input data) which have been measured available, but this may not be the generalized for all structures. In this article, a new method with unknown inputs (excitations) is provided to identify structural matrix such as stiffness, mass, damping and other nonlinear parts, unknown disturbances for example. An analytical solution is thus constructed and presented because the solution in the existing literature has not been available. The goals of this paper are towards access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services, promotion of inclusive and sustainable urbanization and participation, implementation of sustainable and disaster-resilient buildings, sustainable human settlement planning and manage. Simulation results of linear and nonlinear structures show that the proposed method is able to identify structural parameters and their changes due to damage and unknown excitations. Therefore, the goal is believed to achieved in the near future by the ongoing development of AI and control theory.

This paper proposes a spectral element which can represent dynamic responses in high frequency domain such as Lamb waves on a thin plate. A two layer beam model under 2-D plane strain condition is introduced to simulate high-frequency dynamic responses induced by piezoelectric layer (PZT layer) bonded on a base plate. In the two layer beam model, a PZT layer is assumed to be rigidly bonded on a base beam. Mindlin-Herrmann and Timoshenko beam theories are employed to represent the first symmetric and anti-symmetric Lamb wave modes on a base plate, respectively. The Bernoulli beam theory and 1-D linear piezoelectricity are used to model the electro-mechanical behavior of a PZT layer. The equations of motions of a two layer beam model are derived through Hamilton's principle. The necessary boundary conditions associated with electro mechanical properties of a PZT layer are formulated in the context of dual functions of a PZT layer as an actuator and a sensor. General spectral shape functions of response field and the associated boundary conditions are formulated through equations of motions converted into frequency domain. A detailed spectrum element formulation for composing the dynamic stiffness matrix of a two layer beam model is presented as well. The validity of the proposed spectral element is demonstrated through comparison results with the conventional 2-D FEM and the previously developed spectral elements.

A solution strategy for geometric non-linear analysis for the plane frame structures subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces is presented. By making efficient combination of the load incremental method and the displacement incremental method, this strategy can find postbuckling configuration such as snap-through and turning-back phenomena which cannot be easily found by the conventional load and displacement incrementation scheme. In the case of the analysis of the framed structure subjected to circulatory non-conservative forces, the total tangent stiffness matrix becomes unsymmetric and when calculating the incremental load and unbalanced load vector components, the direction change of the non-conservative forces is considered. Several example problems to demonstrate the feasibility of the present strategy, over ranges of deformation that are well beyond those likly to occur in practical framed structures, are given and discussed.
