  • This paper deals with the feasibility assessment of hybrid linear motor that operates based on self-moving cell concept. The moving cell is composed of Magnetostrictive actuator and a ring structure, and a cell train is constructed by connecting two cells in series. Since this motor uses strong push force of Terfenol-D actuators and friction of the cells, it can essentially produce long stroke and large force. The overall performance of the motor was measured in terms of speed and force.

  • This study describes the real-time measurement system which consist of multi-components load cell and linear motor. Operationg and data acquisition is controlled by PC. Multi-components load cell measures simultaneously the vertical force Fz and frictional force Fx when contactors move on sample surface. Linear motor is used to translate with constant speed without vibration. The frictional coefficient is calculated by Matlab$^{TM}$. The frictional coefficients between Al. plates. and fingertip and fabrics are measured.d.

  • Gene expression in a cell is regulated by mutual activations or repressions between genes. Identifying the gene regulation network will be one of the most important research topics in the post genomic era. We propose a linear dynamic model of gene regulation for the yeast cell cycle. A small gene network consisting of about 40 genes is reconstructed from the analysis of micro-array gene expression data of yeast S. cerevisiae published by P. Spellman et al. We show that the network construction is consistent with the result of the hierarchical cluster analysis.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the other-cell interference characteristics for various non-uniform traffic distributions and their effects on the capacity of multi-cell CDMA system. We consider three different traffic distributions, i.e., linear, exponential and Gaussian traffic distribution with distribution parameters. Changing the distribution parameter, we can obtain the center-focused distributions or uniform distributions for each model. From the results of other-cell interference calculation we can see that the other-cell interference decreases, as the user concentrates on the base station. Also using frequency reuse efficiency indicating the capacity reduction of a multi-cell system when compared to a single cell system, we evaluate the effect of traffic distribution on the reverse link CDMA capacity. For linear case, the capacity of multi-cell system is reduced to 0.637∼0.867 times that of single cell system. On the other hand, for both exponential and Gaussian cases, the capacity under a multi-cell environment is equal to 70∼100% of that under a single cell. Therefore, we conclude that the average capacity of multi-cell CDMA system are increased when users are likely to be at near the cell base station due to reduced total other-cell interference and decreased when users exist at near the cell edge regardless of traffic distribution models.

  • We make a simple electrically controllable linear polarization rotator over $360^{\circ}$ without loss by using a thick ECB(electrically controlled birefringence) liquid crystal cell and a quarter wave plate at 514.5 nm wavelength. Its operating principle can be analyzed and explained by using simple polarization analysis and experimental data. We demonstrate that the degree of polarization of the rotator is 0.964 and the temporal variation for 1 week lies within ${\pm}1$ degree. We can easily solve the problem of nonlinearity of the dependence of the rotational angle of linear polarization on the applied voltage by changing the utilized voltage range or its fitting curve.

  • The two-dimensional incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic fluid we considered in this research has rapidly oscillating initial conditions which contain both the large scale and small scale information. In order to grasp this double-scale phenomenon of the complex flow, a multiscale analysis method is developed based on the mathematical homogenization theory. For the incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic Maxwell fluid, a well-posed multiscale system, including averaged equations and cell problems, is derived by employing the appropriate multiple scale asymptotic expansions to approximate the velocity, pressure and stress fields. And then, this multiscale system is solved numerically using the pseudospectral algorithm based on a time-splitting semi-implicit influence matrix method. The comparisons between the multiscale solutions and the direct numerical simulations demonstrate that the multiscale model not only captures large scale features accurately, but also reflects kinetic interactions between the large and small scale of the incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic fluid.

  • In this paper, 1-axis tracking mechanism of solar-cell panel, which is able to rotate from -90 degree to +90 degree for maintaining always perpendicular between solar-cell panel and sun, was analyzed. This paper propose the non-linear shaped guidance and analyze mathematical formulation of non-linear shape. This analysis shows that it is able to identify the non-linear shaped guidance. Especially, even though the length of rotating link have changed, the non-linear shaped guidance could be confirm with proper size. As effectiveness of this result, 10% efficiency rising is estimated compared to the conventional 1-axis tracking mechanism and also optimal non-linear shaped guidance can be suggested for various size of solar-cell panel. Therefore the flexible mass-production is possible for various size of non-linear shaped guidance.

  • Burman (1987) and Hall and Titterington (1987) studied kernel smoothing for sparse multinomial data in detail. Both of their estimators for cell probabilities are sparse asymptotic consistent under some restrictive conditions on the true cell probabilities. Dong and Simonoff (1994) adopted boundary kernels to relieve the restrictive conditions. We propose a local linear kernel estimator which is popular in nonparametric regression to estimate cell probabilities. No boundary adjustment is necessary for this estimator since it adapts automatically to estimation at the boundaries. It is shown that our estimator attains the optimal rate of convergence in mean sum of squared error under sparseness. Some simulation results and a real data application are presented to see the performance of the estimator.

  • This paper presents a study on fluid flow analysis of organic semiconductor thin film deposition process using the computational numerical method. In the production process, the thickness of deposited organic thin film depends on distribution of nozzle size in the linear cell system, so we analyze to decide the optimal nozzle system for uniform thickness of organic thin film. The results of deposited thickness of thin film by numerical analysis are in good agreement with those of the experimental measurements.
