  • Methods for deriving design input-parameters to ensure the stability of a structure on a common ground are generally well known. Folded metamorphic rocks, such as the study area, are highly foliated and have small faults parallel to the foliation, resulting in special research methods and tests to derive design input parameters, Etc. are required. The metamorphic rock ground with foliation development of several mm intervals has a direct shear test on the foliation surface, the strike/dip mapping of the foliation, the boring investigation to determine the continuity of the foliation, and the rock mass rating of the metamorphic rock. etc. are required. In the case of a large number of small foliation-parallel faults developed along a specific foliation plane, it is essential to analyze the lineament, surface geologic mapping for fault tracing, and direct shear test. Folded ground requires additional geological-structural-domain analysis, discontinuity analysis of stereonet, electrical resistivity exploration along the fold axis, and so on.

  • The focal mechanism of the Hongsung Earthquake (1978. Oct. 7, M$_L$=5.0, Latitude 36.62N, Longitude 1 26.67E) was evaulated using the polarity distribution of the P-Waveforms. Through the non-linear computer process, the compatibility of polarity distributions of the 9 P-Waveforms observed at teleseismic distances from the Hongsung Earthquake epicenter was investigated to those of the focal mechanism determined from the varying strike, dip and rake angles. The resultant values for the strike and dip angle of the principal fault plane, which apparently matches very well the sunface lineament of the Hongsung region, are determined to be about 247 degree and 78 degree with uncertainties, respectively. However, the rake angle of the focal mechanism has wide range of 40 degree to 160 degree, which is mainly due to the poor coverage of the azimuthal angle of the observed seismic stations. Due to the consistency of principal stress axes, the resultant focal mechanism could support the current stress regime of that region, which may be caused by subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Eurasia Plate along the Japan Trench. It also provides information of seismic source characteristics of the part of the Korean Peninsula for aseismic design criteria such as Site Specific Response Spectrum and Strong Ground Motion Time History for the nuclear power plants and related nuclear waste disposal facility sites.

  • The purpose of this study is to make and validate landslide susceptibility map using artificial neural network and GIS in Kangneung area. For this, topography, soil, forest, geology and land cover data sets were constructed as a spatial database in GIS. From the database, slope, aspect, curvature, water system, topographic type, soil texture, soil material, soil drainage, soil effective thickness, wood type, wood age, wood diameter, forest density, lithology, land cover, and lineament were used as the landslide occurrence factors. The weight of the each factor was calculated, and applied to make landslide susceptibility maps using artificial neural network. Then the maps were validated using rate curve method which can predict qualitatively the landslide occurrence. The landslide susceptibility map can be used to reduce associated hazards, and to plan land use and construction as basic data.

  • To evaluate the feasibility of using lineaments for the interpretation of regional geological structures, the extracted lineaments from satellite image and surveyed surface geological features mapped in the field were analyzed for the Euiseong Sub-basin. The lineaments extracted from Landsat-5 TM images show primary directions of N20$^{\circ}$~30$^{\circ}$E, N60$^{\circ}$~70$^{\circ}$E, N60$^{\circ}$~70$^{\circ}$W, which represent the trends of faults, strikes, and joints. In the sedimentary formation in the northern part of Palgongsan Uplift Zone, primary directions of the lineaments are NNE and NWW, and NEE in southern parts. The analysis of satellite lineaments is proved to be very useful to study the large-scale structures and surface geology of the Euiseong Sub-basin, whereas the previous research using brittle tectonics approach was advantaged in the outcrop scale in interpretation.

  • The aim of this study is to detect landslide using digital aerial photography and apply the landslide to landslide susceptibility mapping by artificial neural network (ANN) and geographic information system (GIS) at Jinbu area where many landslides have occurred in 2006 by typhoon Ewiniar, Bilis and Kaemi. Landslide locations were identified by visual interpretation of aerial photography taken before and after landslide occurrence, and checked in field. For landslide susceptibility mapping, maps of the topography, geology, soil, forest, lineament, and landuse were constructed from the spatial data sets. Using the factors and landslide location and artificial neural network, the relative weight for the each factors was determinated by back-propagation algorithm. As the result, the aspect and slope factor showed higher weight in 1.2-1.5 times than other factors. Then, landslide susceptibility map was drawn using the weights and finally, the map was validated by comparing with landslide locations that were not used directly in the analysis. As the validation result, the prediction accuracy showed 81.44%.

  • In this study, the weight of evidence(WofE) technique based on GIS was applied to spatially estimate the groundwater yield characteristics at the Pocheon area In Gyunggi-do. The groundwater preservation depends on many hydro-geologic factors that include hydrologic data, land-use data, topographic data, geological map and other natural materials collected at the site, even with man-made things. All these data can be digitally processed and managed by GIS database. In the applied technique of WofE, the prior probabilities were estimated as the factors that affect the yield on lineament, geology, drainage pattern or river system density, landuse and soil. We calculated the value of the weight values, W+ and W-, of each factor and estimated the contrast value of it. Results by the groundwater yield characteristic computation using this scheme were presented feasibility map in the form of the posterior probability to the consideration of in-situ samples. It is concluded that this technique is regarded as one of the effective techniques for the feasibility mapping related to the estimation of groundwater-bearing potential zones and its spatial pattern.

  • Geophysical data sets from the Chojeong area in the Chungbok-Do are compositely studied in terms of multi-attribute interpretations for the subsurface mappings of shallow fracture zones, associated with groundwater reservoir. Utilizing a GIS software, the attribute data were implemented to a database; a lineament from the satellite image, electrical resistivities and its standard deviation, radioactivity, seismic velocity, and bedrock depth. In an attempt to interpret 1-D electrical sounding data in 3-D views, 1-D data are firstly performed horizontal and vertical inter- and extrapolation. Reconstruction of a resistivity volume is found to be an effective scheme for subsurface mapping of shallow fracture zones. Shallow fracture zones are located in the southeastern part of the study area, which are commonly correlated with the various exploration data.

  • Due to the complexity of the causes of the sliding mass instabilities, landslide susceptibility and hazard evaluation are difficult, but they can be more carefully considered and regionally evaluated by using new programming technologies to minimize the hazard. This study aims to evaluate the landslide hazard zonation in the Tabriz region, Iran. A fuzzy logic-based multi-criteria decision-making method was proposed for susceptibility analysis and preparing the hazard zonation maps implemented in MATLAB programming language and Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. In this study, five main factors have been identified as triggering including climate (i.e., precipitation, temperature), geomorphology (i.e., slope gradient, slope aspect, land cover), tectonic and seismic parameters (i.e., tectonic lineament congestion, distribution of earthquakes, the unsafe radius of main faults, seismicity), geological and hydrological conditions (i.e., drainage patterns, hydraulic gradient, groundwater table depth, weathered geo-materials), and human activities (i.e., distance to roads, distance to the municipal areas) in the study area. The results of analyses are presented as a landslide hazard map which is classified into 5 different sensitive categories (i.e., insignificant to very high potential). Then, landslide susceptibility maps were prepared for the Tabriz region, which is categorized in a high-sensitive area located in the northern parts of the area. Based on these maps, the Bozgoosh-Sahand mountainous belt, Misho-Miro Mountains and western highlands of Jolfa have been delineated as risk-able zones.

  • Manually mapping fractures in construction stone mines is challenging, time-consuming, and hazardous. In this method, there is no physical access to all points. In contrast, digital image processing offers a safe, cost-effective, and fast alternative, with the capability to map all joints. In this study, two methods of detecting the trace of discontinuities using image processing in construction stone mines are presented. To achieve this, we employ two modified Hough transform algorithms and the degree of neighborhood technique. Initially, we introduced a method for selecting the best edge detector and smoothing algorithms. Subsequently, the Canny detector and median smoother were identified as the most efficient tools. To trace discontinuities using the mentioned methods, common preprocessing steps were initially applied to the image. Following this, each of the two algorithms followed a distinct approach. The Hough transform algorithm was first applied to the image, and the traces were represented through line drawings. Subsequently, the Hough transform results were refined using fuzzy clustering and reduced clustering algorithms, along with a novel algorithm known as the farthest points' algorithm. Additionally, we developed another algorithm, the degree of neighborhood, tailored for detecting discontinuity traces in construction stones. After completing the common preprocessing steps, the thinning operation was performed on the target image, and the degree of neighborhood for lineament pixels was determined. Subsequently, short lines were removed, and the discontinuities were determined based on the degree of neighborhood. In the final step, we connected lines that were previously separated using the method to be described. The comparison of results demonstrates that image processing is a suitable tool for identifying rock mass discontinuity traces. Finally, a comparison of two images from different construction stone mines presented at the end of this study reveals that in images with fewer traces of discontinuities and a softer texture, both algorithms effectively detect the discontinuity traces.

  • A geophysical mapping was performed for Hwasan caldera which is located in Euisung Sub-basin of the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. In order to overcome the limitation of the previous studies, remote sensing technic was used and dense potential data were obtained and analyzed. First, we analyzed geological lineament for target area using geological map, digital elevation model (DEM) data and satellite imagery. The results were greatly consistent with the previous studies, and showed that N-S and NW-SE direction are the most dominant one in target area. Second, based on the lineament analysis, highly dense gravity data were acquired in Euisung Sub-basin and an integrated interpretation considering air-born magnetic data was made to investigate the regional structure of the target area. The results of power spectrum analysis for the acquired potential data revealed that the subsurface of Euisung Sub-basin have two density discontinuities at about 1 km and 3-5 km depth. A 1 km depth discontinuity is thought as the depth of pyroclastic sedimentary rocks or igneous rocks which were intruded at the ring vent of Hwasan caldera, while a 3-5 km depth discontinuity seems to be associated with the depth of the basin basement. In addition, three-dimensional gravity inversion for the total area of Euisung Sub-basin was carried out, and the inversion results indicated two followings; 1) Cretaceous Palgongsan granite and Bulguksa intrusion rocks, which are located in southeastern part and northeastern part of Euisung Sub-basin, show two major low density anomalies, 2) pyroclastic rocks around Hwasan caldera also have lower density when compared with those of neighborhood regions and are extended to 1.5 km depth. However, a poor vertical resolution of potential survey makes it difficult to accurately delineate the detailed structure caldera which has a vertically developed characteristic in general. To overcome this limitation, integrated analysis was carried out using the magnetotelluric data on the corresponding area with potential data and we could obtain more reasonable geologic structure.
