In power generation systems a variety of structural components typically operate at high temperature and pressure. Therefore a life assessment methodology accounting for gradual creep fracture is increasingly needed for these components. The most critical defects in such structure are generally found in the form of semi-elliptical surface cracks in the welded tubular joints. Therefore the analysis of a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate or a shell is an important problem in engineering fracture mechanics. On this background, via shell/line-spring finite element analyses of such surface cracks in the welded T and L joints under various loadings, we investigate J-integral along the crack front We first develop T and L joints auto mesh generation program providing ABAQUS input file composed of shell/line-spring finite elements. We then further develop a T and L joints life assessment program based on the experimental creep crack growth law and auto mesh generation program in a graphical user interface format Finally the remaining life of T and L joints for various analytical parameters are assessed using the developed life assessment program.

The propagation rate(da/dt) prediction parameter and the microstructure properties of creep crack in domestic 3.3NiCrMov steel were investigated at 550$\^{C}$ by using 0.5" CT specimen under constant load(4090N) and constant Ct(300∼4000N/mhr) condition that was maintained during crack growth of 1mm distance. C* usually increased with crack length though load was reduced in order to maintain constant Ct value as crack growth and considerably showed the scatter band, but Ct depended on load line displacement rate and represented a good relation with da/dt. At constant toad and Ct region, crack growth slope was 0.900 and 0.844 each, in the other hand C* slope was 0.480. Fully coalesced area(FCA) ahead of crack tip was increased as Ct value increase to the critical value, and after that value FCA decreased. The average diameter ditribution of cavity in FCA showed the greatest value about 1.5 ㎛ when Ct=2000N/mhr. The increasing of Ct in FCA view point enlarged the size of damage area and the size reached to maximum 800 ㎛ when Ct=2000N/mhr.
An experimental study was carried out to identify the fatigue fractue behavior of weld zone in generally rolled steel for marine structure. The bending an shear loads were applied simultaneously on the specimens to simulate real load condition for marine structure. The effect of the stress intensity factor under mode I with II loading condition on the initiation and the propagation of a crack were investigated, with particular emphaiss on mode II. When the $K_{II}$ stress intensiy factor in mode II was applied under mode I load condition, the growth behavior of a crack seems to be affected mainly by the anisotropic characteristic of materials. Especially, when the crack was located in and near the weld zone and parallel to th weld line, the propagation behaviour was turned out to be quite different from that of the base metal along the direction transverse to the weld line. In general, the propagation veiocity of the cracks in and near the weld zone was found to be slower that the velocity in base metal.

The fracture mechanics analysis of surface cracks in plates and cylindrical geometries is important in the integrity evaluation of flawed structural components. The objective of this paper is, thus, to numerically investigate an interaction effect of two surface cracks in plate and cylindrical geometries. The effect of crack spacing on the magnitude of the stress intensity factor(K) is investigated using the line-spring model. For the case of a finite plate under uniaxial loading, the effect of crack spacing on the K values is negligible. However, for the case of a cylinder under moderate internal pressure, a significant increase in K values is observed at the deepest point of the surface crack.

Fatigue crack propagation of duplex stainless steel weldments was studied to develop further phenomenological understanding of the influences of welding heat cycle accompanying microstructural changes. Fatigue tests were carried out under constant amplitude of load in air at room temperature. The results showed that the crack propagation rate was different in base metal, heat affected zone and welding line. The crack propagation behavior in each part of duplex stainless steel was strongly dependent on phase ratio(.gamma../.alpha.) and several factors of microstructure also affected this propagation behavior. The fractographic feature in each part of steel were discussed on crack propagation behaviors.
This thesis studied to evaluate the fatigue behavior and propagation of rail steel under welding line. Test of crack growth was performed by all member of rail under constant amplitude loading at the structures laboratory in Hongik University. The effect of the following parameters with initiated crack length on the bottom edge of rail were studied. Here, fracture mechanics mode is opening mode. and Testing Material is KS50N Rail. From analysis and experimented result on the three Point bending in the lab, This paper presented a effect of crack growth , shape and remaining service life. Further more, according to the variable crack length, variable section and the ratio of section the fatigue behavior and propagation were studied.

This study deals with the prediction of crack propagation in concrete mortar subjected to static and dynamic load. Total 54 CLWL-DCB(Crack-line-loaded-double-cantilever beam) concrete mortar specimens were tested to measure crack growth using ASTM 561-80. Main variables were sand to cement ratio and water to cement ratio. The resulting load(P)-COD(Crack Opening Displacement; $2V_1$) curves and COD-CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement; $2V_2$) curves were analyzed to calculate effective crack length and physical crack length by way of ASTM 561-80 proposed. Replica crack length were also obtained directly during the test. The differences in crack propagation between under static load and under dynamic load were investigated.

Monitoring surface cracks is important to ensure the health of concrete structures. However, traditional visual inspection to monitor the concrete cracks has disadvantages such as subjective inspection nature, associated time and cost, and possible danger to inspectors. To alter the visual inspection, a complete procedure for automated crack assessment based on adaptive digital image processing has been proposed in this study. Crack objects are extracted from the images using the subtraction with median filter and the local binarization using the Niblack's method. To adaptively. determine the optimal window sizes for the median filter and the Niblack's method without distortion of crack object an optimal filter size index (OFSI) is proposed. From the extracted crack objects using the optimal size of window, the crack objects are decomposed to the crack skeletons and edges, and the crack width is calculated using 4-connected normal line according to the orientation of the local skeleton line. For an image, a crack width nephogram is obtained to have an intuitive view of the crack distribution. The proposed procedure is verified from a test on a concrete reaction wall with various types of cracks. From the crack images with different crack widths and patterns, the widths of cracks in the order of submillimeters are calculated with high accuracy.
Austenitic stainless steel has good weldability but is sensitive to hot cracking such as solidification crack and liquation crack. In this study, the specimens of dissimilar metals made between austenitic stainless steel and Al-brass were welded by GTAW process using four different filler metals. Cracks were detected in the heat-affected zone of the stainless steel when welded with CuAl, CuSn and NiCu filler metals, but no cracks were detected a Ni filler metal was used. The cracks propagated along the grain boundary in the heat affected zone near the fusion line to base metal of 316L stainless steel. The cracks were located inside the weld bead with very fine hairline crack. All cracks initiated at the fusion line and moved forward in the base metal. From energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), Cu peak was detected only in the crack-opening area.

This paper investigates the effects of T-stress and plastic hardening mismatch on the interfacial crack-tip stress field via finite element analyses. Plane strain elastic-plastic crack-tip fields are modeled with both MBL formulation and a full SEC specimen under pure bending. Modified Prandtl slip line fields illustrate the effects of T-stress on crack-tip constraint in homogeneous material. Compressive T-stress substantially reduces the interfacial crack-tip constraint, but increases the J-contribution by lower hardening material, J$\_$L/. For bimaterials with two elastic-plastic materials, increasing plastic hardening mismatch increases both crack-tip stress constraint in the lower hardening material and J$\_$L/. The fracture toughness for bimaterial joints would consequently be much lower than that of lower hardening homogeneous material. The implication of unbalanced J-integral in bimaterials is also discussed.
