  • In this study, Catalytic reforming with vapor and biomass gasification was simultaneously performed in a same fixed bed reactor at $600-800^{\circ}C$. Light gases were produced from reformation of the tar (fuel gases) in biomass gasification by using limonite and dolomite, as catalysts. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide are main components in light gases. Hydrogen yields increased with temperature increasing in the range of $650-800^{\circ}C$, because the water shift reaction was promoted by catalyst. The yield of hydrogen gas was increased about 160% under catalyst with the mixture of limonite and dolomite comparing to limonite only.

  • Nickel oxide ores are composed of two kinds of minerals; one is saprolite that is processed by smelting to obtain nickel products, and the other is limonite that is used in hydrometallugical processes. It is not efficient economically to process the mixture of limonite and saprolite, so the processes to saparate the ore mixture should be developed. In the present study, the mixture was separated by dry-classification after liberationg using grindability difference between limonite and saprolite. Consequently, it is possible to obtain the limonite with less than 10% of Mg+Si contents, which could be treated by hydrometallurgical processes, when the limonite contain less than 30% of saprolite.

  • Nickel laterite ore is classified into two principal ore types: saprolite (silicate ore) and limonite (oxide ore). Saprolite-type ore characterized by high magnesia and silica contents is treated by pyrometallurgy process. On the other hand, limonite-type ore is subjected to hydrometallurgy process to produce nickel products. Hydrometallurgy process requires that a raw material to meet the demands that Si+Mg contents lower than 10% and Fe content over than 40%. It is therefore required that separation of saprilite-type ore to use nickel laterite ore as a raw material for hydrometallurgy process. In this study, separation of sparolite-type ore and limonite-type ore from nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia has been tried by dry classification. The results show that -5 mm size fraction and +5 mm size fraction of the nickel laterite ore contains mainly limonite-type ore and saprolite-type ore, respectively. To understand the moisture content of the raw ore on the dry classification, nickel laterite ore with different moisture contents of 23.0% and 9.1% were subjected to the dry classification. The results show that drying of the ore makes the separation more efficient as the amount of the fine product, that can be subjected to hydrometallurgy process without further separation or drying operations, was increased.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the removal rate of organic and inorganic matters from landfill leachate using pre-treatment process as coagulation and limonite adsorption, and membrane process as RO (reverse osmosis) and NF(nanofiltration). By adding limonite adsorption as pre-treatment process, about 40% of organic matters in leachate was removed through pre-treatment process and 74.7% of boron was removed after RO process without pH adjustment. The rejection rate of boron in RO process mainly depends on the pH and increased at pH value of 10. RO process was performed as two stage system adjusting pH condtion to 7 and 10 in second RO stage for boron removal. Most (>90%) of TOC, Cl- and inorganic matters as Ca was rejected in first RO stage, the residue was rejected in second RO and the rejection rate was above 97%. Considering economic efficiency of operation cost, NF substituted for the first RO and total removal rate of TOC was above 90%. Through RO system toxicity to Daphnia in leachate was removed completely.

  • To understand the characteristics of uranium distribution, and the correlation of the uranium content and major constituents in uraniferous black slates from the Jinsan area of Ogcheon Fold Terrain, forty representative specimens were analyzed by mineralogical and radiometric techniques. According to statistical analysis, the uranium has a positive correlation with organic carbon and limonite, but a negative relation to muscovite and other opaques. The relationship with the highest and meaningful correlation is between log uranium and organic carbon. The log uranium-organic carbon correlation coefficient is 0.845 and these two constituents have about 71.4% association. It suggests that the abundance of organic carbon controlled the uranium precipitation. The relationship of organic carbon to log uranium can be expressed by following regression equation log ($U_3O_8{\times}10^4+1$)=-1.3447+2.5599 log (organic carbon). The multiple regression equation of different major components to log uranium is log ($U_3O_8{\times}10^4+1$)=0.77396+ 0.04465 (organic carbon)+0.00574 (quartz)-0.00964 (muscovite)+0.37827 (biotite)-0.02286 (clay substance)+0.01268 (other silicates)+0.1032 (barite)-0.00224 (apatite)+0.01606 (calcite)+0.08258 (hematite)-0.02406 (limonite)-0.01715 (other opaques).

  • The bridged disulphato complex $[Cr_2(NH_2)_2(H_2O)_2(SO_4)_2]{\cdot}2H_2O$, terminal triisocyanato $[Cr(NCO)_3(H_2O)]{\cdot}3H_2O$ complex and limonite, $[FeO(OH)]{\cdot}0.2H_2O$ compound were prepared by the reaction of $Cr_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}xH_2O, Cr(CH_3COO)_3$ and $Fe_2(SO_4)_3$, respectively, with urea in aqueous media at $80^{\circ}C$. The infrared spectra of the products indicate that the absence of the bands of urea, but shows the characteristic bands of coordinated amide, water, bridged sulphato and isocyanato groups. Thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements on the complexes are also recorded. The data obtained agree quite well with the expected structures. A general mechanisms describing the formation and its thermal decomposition of the complexes are suggested.

  • Combined mineralogical and geochemical studies were made on two hundred eighty one representative samples from uraniferous coaly meta-pelites of the Ogcheon metamorphic terrain. Different mineral occurrence of the areas investigated should be taken into account for chemical processes for uranium extraction. Secondary uranium minerals identified are metauranocircite, metatorbernite and autunite. These are disseminated mostly on the laumontites which infused and filled secondary openings in the coaly matrix, and are often closely associated with iron oxides. The uranium distribution show distinctly log normal. Geochemical correlation coefficient of uranium and organic carbon displays +0.624~+0.796. The relationship of the major components to uranium can be expressed by the following regression equation: Log $(U_3O_8{\times}10^4)$=1.40117-0.00076 (quartz) -0.00118 (muscovite) +0.00235 (biotite) +0.00323 (other silicates) - 0.01114 (apatite) +0.01124 (hematite) +0.00149 (limonite) -0.01823 (opaques)+0.03049 (organic carbon). Uranium in the coaly meta-pelites of the Ogcheon Group was deposited together under same physico-chemical environmental conditions. There is a considerable variation in the ${\delta}^{34}S$ values (11.2~16.8 per mil) of the pyrites from the U-bearing meta-pelites, which implies sedimentary origin. The two U-bearing coaly rocks analyzed have ${\delta}^{13}C$ values between -16.88~-18.00 per mil, which suggests organic.

  • This study is focused on applying heavyweight concrete to ballast used to have stability of a ship. Generally, heavyweight concrete is made from a high density aggregate like magnetite or limonite. However, these materials are hard to obtain them from relevant companies and so expensive. Therefore, this study plans to product heavyweight ballast concrete which is easy to obtain by recycled iron slag. Heavyweight ballast concrete isn't required to meet some compressive strength in use, but it is required to have high flowable and 2.7t/m3 of bulk density to fill the ballast tank densely. The designed field mix proportion of concrete based on the results of pre-experiment shows it can control the temperature crack and has superior chloride corrosion resistance after conducting chloride corrosion experiment. Also, it is prefer that before airtightness voltile corrosion inhibiter(VCI) is added in airtight space of shipyard.

  • This paper deals with grain size analysis, heavy mineral analysis and trace element analysis of the recent sediments of Han River basin between Cheongpyong, Gyeonggi province and Seoul. For each location the samples are taken at river shoreline, river berm and river dune. The size analysis discloses that the mean values range from $-1.37{\phi}$ to $-1.60{\phi}$, sorting values range from 0.25 to 1.84, skewness values range from -0.44 to 0.51 and kurtosis values range from -0.1 to 1.75. Based on the textural parameters, the dune sand can be distinguished from the shoreline-berm sand. The content of heavy minerals of each sample ranges from 0.04 to 4.7%. The principal heavy minerals are ilmenite, magnetite, leucoxene, garnet, amphibole, pyroxene, kyanite, zircon, monazite, tourmaline, epidote, limonite, and minor minerals are apatite, sillimanite, andalusite and olivine. In general, dune sand samples contain more heavy minerals than the samples of shoreline or berm sand. This suggests that the heavy mineral concentration is affected by wind action more than by any other causes. The content of ilmenite and leucoxene decreases, whereas the content of zircon and epidote increases as it approaches the downstream region. The differences result from the variance of geological occurrences. The emission spectrochemical analysis and colorimetry analysis revealed that the content of Ni and V in the heavy minerals of the study area are higher than those of other stream sediments in Korea. On the other hand the content of Cu, Ph, Zn, Mo, W, P, Mn, Cr, Ag and Sn are lower in the study area. It has been observed also that the contents of all the elements except for Bi are higher in this area than the samples of marine sediments of Yellow Sea.
